I have windows 7 on my old laptop, so I thought I would give windows 8 a try. If I liked it I would buy a product key.
The evaluation download from ms doesn't seem to want to work on the wiped hard drive. Saying that I could not get it to work when vista was installed.

I looked at the specs for 8/8.1, the old machine should run them!!!. Over the weekend I wiped the hhd clean. I tried the win 8 dvd again but it did the same thing just loaded the files and nothing else.
Yes I might have to upgrade.
I downloaded win 8 iso and burnt it to a dvd, went into bios and selected boot from cd/dvd. It starts (loading files......) loads twice, then screen goes blank. Left it for 3+ hours screen still blank.
Re-started pc, (I have Vista Home Premium) inserted iso disc, run setup.exe, hit install now...

reset to time before last batch of critical updates were installed. It finished but said (failed to restore) So I rebooted after failed to restore, it must have done something as all seems to be well at the moment. I looked at the update history and saw update today 22nd KB3150513. But failed 7...
At the moment it's restoring files and settings, and system restore initializing. been doing this for about 10 mins. It's 10pm this side of the pond so I'll post tomorrow.

reply was pinging water.com 209.10.103.203 with 32 bytes of data. Then 4 times request timed out, then says ping statistics for 209.10.103.203, packets sent = 4 received = 0, lost = 4 (100% loss)
