if you are able to load normally after this, the check your video card drivers and/or check the video card itself if it's dusty and all, if so, then clean the slot which it's inserted into and the card itself if not lazy enough.... check your RAM (memtest) and also clean them if they're dusty...

I don't really think that it's CPU's fault, I mean wouldn't it turn out to be at least BSOD, or worse consequence if it was a faulty CPU. I guess it's somewhere on the software level, if freezes started after a fresh install of OS. Then again, drivers are up to date. Yet, call me ludicrous, but...

I had Avira once. However was satesfied with Avast more. Don't really remember the reason but something made change my mind when I was going throw anti-viruses looking with what I should replace Nod.

If I'm getting it rigth, you can't burn a cd or a dvd iso. Why not getting Nero? it burns ISOs just perfectly.
