Windows 7 Dual Boot XP and Win7-problem: ntoskrnl.ex

Question: how do I get rid of all those boot files from S:? I tried to delete them, both while in XP and in Win7. While in XP the message I got back was: "Access Denied". And while in Win7 I got back the message "Need permission from TrusedInstaller." Any insights on how to do this?

Saltgrass-thanks so much for all your help. Your suggestion that I do more than one Startup Repair finally did the trick. Everything is now operating as it should: both Win7 and XP now boot up through the Boot Manager.

Windows 7 Dual Boot XP and Win7-problem: ntoskrnl.ex

So you said I do not neet a logical drive. If I were to reinstall Win7, how would I get rid of that logical drive and replace it with a primary partition? I had created that partition via XP long ago in anticipation of when I'd finally install Win7. I don't remember ever making it into a logical...

Windows 7 Dual Boot XP and Win7-problem: ntoskrnl.ex

I am positive that both XP and Win7 reside on e: (which is SATA-1). I physically disconnected s:, and the computer still booted, albeit only in XP. And as you can see in my included picture of Disk Management, both XP and Win7 (installed on the Logical partition,) are on the same disk. Thus if I...

Windows 7 Dual Boot XP and Win7-problem: ntoskrnl.ex

Perhaps bcdboot is the only way to go. If you could interpret for me all the commands that I'd need then I could try to do this myself: 1. If I'm trying to copy the files from S: to E: then would S: be the source (in other words "s:/windows")? 2. Would I need to type in "/1"? It looks like a...

Windows 7 Dual Boot XP and Win7-problem: ntoskrnl.ex

This is how I get into the BIOS from XP (correct me if I'm wrong, but there's effectively no BIOS for Win7, correct?): 1. I hold down on the Delete key during startup. 2. Up pops the Phoenix Award BIOS. 3. I choose the 2nd option: Advanced BIOS Features. 4. Up comes an entry entitled "Hard Disk...

Windows 7 Dual Boot XP and Win7-problem: ntoskrnl.ex

OK so I need an accurate definition of the term Primary Disk, and Primary Partition (if there is a difference between the two). If by asking me to make sure that the XP disk is set in the BIOS as the primary you mean that you want me to make sure that the XP disk is set as the disk from which my...

Oh wow! This stuff in bcdedit is serious programmer-speak! This is way above my head! Isn't it possible for me to just manually move all of those files over to the C: drive?

Yes-thank you for that confirmation. As you were writing all of this I was actually checking into the computer to see which SATA connections were which. The XP drive is, in fact, set as the primary (that is to say, it is on SATA 1-that would make it primary, correct?) and in the BIOS SATA 1 is...

Thanks for all the help Saltgrass. Yes, I did note earlier that you mentions that Win7 may put its stuff on an active partition, though this may very well not be the partition that it needs to put its stuff on. I am thinking that, as it is beyond doubt that my Backup Disk should in any way have...

Windows 7 Dual Boot XP and Win7-problem: ntoskrnl.ex

But my concern is that the boot.ini file that I should be using is on the XP disk. And there is a boot.ini file there. So that alone means somehow there some confusion within my system. The very fact that this S: disk is identified in Disk Management as a "system" disk means there is confusion...

Windows 7 Dual Boot XP and Win7-problem: ntoskrnl.ex

I don't think you're understanding: it's not normal. That disk should have nothing at all to do with any system booting up at any time. That's the sole jobs of XP (E: ), and Win7 (C: ). That disk that I just assigned the letter S to is a backup disk, used by True Image 2009. You don't think I...

Windows 7 Dual Boot XP and Win7-problem: ntoskrnl.ex

OK-another big development: since adding the S to the previously hidden disk, I went to EasyBCD and once again chose Edit Legacy Entries. Up came a boot.ini-the very same boot.ini that comes up whenever I am trying to boot up my system without any disk inserted into my DVD drive (and this is the...

Windows 7 Dual Boot XP and Win7-problem: ntoskrnl.ex

Well, I just assigned S to the previously hidden disk, then it magically showed up, and Voila: there are an awful lot of folders and files on there with the word "boot" in it. There is a Boot folder, Boot.BAK, an actual Boot.ini, a Boot.ini.saved, a bootmgr, a BOOTSECT.BAK, a CONFIG.SYS, and an...

Just tried to go to bcdedit. "The command prompt answered back: The boot configuration data store could not be opened. Access is denied."
