Interesting; I'm using Start8 at present, but I'm curious to know how the same thing can be done without 3rd party software. Can you explain?

Thanks for the suggestion Dave, but the System Update Readiness Tool finds no problem with the Acer.

Thanks for the Autoruns recommendation, I'll give it a try. I also thought about trying the SP1 install in Safe Mode. It's all a bit slow and awkward at present, as I'm no longer onsite with the problem PC, so it's all via remote access and telephone.. ho hum.

Quick problem update - unfortunately disabling or even uninstalling ZoneAlarm did not solve the SP1 install problem. I have had to restore the system and hide the SP1 update. Still looking for a resolution, but not optimistic.

Thanks Joe - I'm not sure that's the problem, because my own PC is running the same ZA software and installed SP1 without problem. I guess it's worth a try though ;)
