Was Win 7 already installed when you bought the laptop? Does the laptop have the ability to hook up external speakers? If so try those to see if it still crackles. Also check the advanced options in the sounds to see if bass boost is on or if the treble is too high.

^ yes, but we are talking about selecting multiple files. If I select over 15 files it no longer shows the total size and you are forced to click show more details. It's a minor details, but would be nice to see total size as I am selecting. On XP if I highlight 35 files, it tells me right there...
Only other suggestion. Do you have your comp hooked to a router or directly to the modem? May want to try connecting to the modem directly to rule out the router issue. Even though IM works, there could be llimited access to the net.

Have you tried multiple browsers to see if it's an IE or Firefox issue? Tried clearing the history/temp files/cookies/cache? I know there is a feature in windows that you can alot time that people are allowed to use the computer and/or internet - could be a conflict there?
