    i think the issue is official resolved. i have not had a problem with the PC at all for the past 2 days. i've left it on for several hours (in idle mode as well as playing starcraft2) with no signs of visual distortion of any kind. Thanks for all the help :)

    no worries. i uninstalled the nvidia card and removed it. i installed the new card (ATI Radeon HD 4650) and ran the latest driver updates from their websites. so far so good

    Its definitely a hardware issue. Now whether its the video card or the mother board is another task Even after having the win7 version of the 196.21 nvidia driver installed it still produced the same error as before. I'm running the pc in safe mode right now and there are slight traces of color...

    There is no other external video port...there is 1 port that has a plastic cap which is screwed over it towards the lower back end of the tower. i'll check it out tonight when i return home. By the way, thanks for all the support.

    so far so good. i was able to install the updated drivers for the RealTek audio device, Intel's wireless network card, the LG Monitor, and the older version of the Nvidia card. i am currently running the windows updates and will reboot it again shortly.

    no, it is no longer under warranty. i rebooted it a few minutes ago and was able to get through the final setup steps fine. it is sitll on and has not gone crazy....yet. will head over to nvidia now to get the older driver. i just want to be able to play starcraft 2 in peace *sigh*

    im back in safe mode...should i just outright delete the nvidia folder, nvlddmkm.sys file where ever it is on the local hard drive? edit while in safe mode i ran a search for the NVLDDMKM.SYS file. there was an instance of it in windows\system32\drivers folder. i renamed it with the .OLD...
