Updates to Malicious Software Removal Tool fail to install. I gather that it could take days to fix this, so what does this software do exactly? Can I do without it?

Perhaps it is not a 64-bit vs 32-bit problem, but just that there is something wrong with Windows. I suppose with frequent updates being installed it must be surprising that Windows goes on working at all. What is the best way of diagnosing and repairing an ActiveX problem?

I have a proprietary program with a programmable interface consisting of an ActiveX DLL. It works properly on a 64-bit version of Windows 7 but not on a 32-bit version. Is there such a thing as an emulator for 32-bit Windows that would make ActiveX work as though it were the 64-bit version?

No doubt - but as I say I am not a professional programmer. To call the DLL I load a VBA program into Word or Excel's VBA editor, then use the mouse to select the SICI in the drop-down list from Tools/References. I would rather not have to run Word or Excel each time. Can what is done with this...

I have been trying various things including what you suggest. However, this morning the computer booted without showing any error message, and I was able to boot into safe mode. So the problem has disappeared as mysteriously as it came.

When I try to boot Windows 7 in safe mode it waits several minutes after loading drivers, then closes down and reboots to normal mode. I find this in the process of investigating 'unspecified error 766f6c756d652e63 3f1' whereby I cannot check the disk without first doing a system restore and I...

I don't know if these are helpful but two shots of 'Properties' are here. I also looked at it using a hex editor but am none the wiser - there is nothing obvious to see.

In C:\users\user I see a file called 'private' which is 10 gigabytes long. Does this originate from a Windows 7 process? If so, can I safely delete it?

Until now I did not know that Windows 7 keeps a record of successful and failed updates. I see that many updates have failed in the past although there was no indication of this at the time. Should I be worried? I should think it would take many hours to fix them all, time I do not have...
