Right click computer icon on desktop and select properties. From menu select device manager. From device manager menu select network adapter. Right click on the network connection (mine is an Intel Pro), select properties, power management and uncheck "Allow this device to wake computer".
Be sure that you have the current motherboard drivers installed. Most laptops will slow the processor and peripherals to conserve battery life when unplugged. If drivers don't slow things down then battery will drain faster.
The problem does seem to be W7 x64. I can share and access files between XP and ALL x86 W7 systems. I can share and access files between ALL W7 x86 and x64 systems. I can access XP from W7 x64. However, I cannot see or access files from XP on the x64 W7 system.
After you booted into Ultimate, you said that the laptop could see the shares but could not access them. What are your settings, in W7, for Network & Sharing Center? Also, do the systems have the same workgroup? I have Network Sharing settings for file sharing encryption set to 40 bit and...
Do you have other partitions on either HDD? Do you have your share on the Ultimate system setup as the "C" drive? Give me a layout of your partitions and what each contains.

Have you received Office updates previously? If not, then open any of the products (Word, Excel). Select Help from Menus, and check for updates. It will then give you the option to get Office updates thru Windows Update.
Do you have your task bar on the top of your screen? Might try moving to bottom and testing. I remember someone else had a problem similar to this that occurred when they put the task bar up top.
SP1 will not correct problems that you experience with your old applications. If they will not run in compatibility mode, then you must upgrade them to release supported on W7 (32 or 64).
Did you get the memory from the OEM of the computer? Are you sure that it is correct? Could be memory errors if motherboard doesn't support the speed of the ram. Go to the Crucial.com site. They have a configurator that you could use to ensure you got the correct memory.
Try disabling IPV6 in the network connections. I have had a similar problem when I download torrents. I believe my problem is an old Netgear router that seems to choke on hi volume with IPV6 turned on. Didn't have this problem with XP or Vista.
