How are you changing the wallpaper? ie. through IE, FF, desktop context menu?

If that's your intention, why don't you just try installing Vista from 7, at least you'll know if your setup will do it for next time!!

I wouldn't mess with the bootfile if i were you ;) Is the partition marked as active in disk management? And has the partition been assigned? run msconfig and check that both OS's are there. go to, Control Panel\System and Security\System\Advanced System Settings then click on the settings...

Your BIOS does support booting from USB devices. You say after trying to install from the USB and setting the BIOS to boot from USB you tried to boot from a DVD but it fails, did you reset the boot option in BIOS back to boot from CD/DVD and is the CD/DVD option above the USB in the boot order...

I'm not 100% sure that's true. I have it set to manual (i just checked :)) and i ran a sucessful system restore 2 days ago, the 'previous versions' also works fine and dandy.

The Volume Shadow Copy Service is set to run manually by default, it would be unnecessary to have it running all the time. Just make sure when the backup is running the Volume Shadow Copy Service is running.

I've had Leopard and Tiger installed in VMware before, it sucked!!! Contrary to what O'Reilly says, you can get OS X running natively on a PC.
