thank you, disabling that wizard cleared up the confusion and uncontrollable changes. it seems like they should reflect the same information, but now that there's only one window it's much easier to rest assured my settings will remain intact. thanks again.

That is the first thing I did. It does help but not nearly enough and it also has side effects such as this high pitched screeching noise if the speakers are too loud.

I've used a headset, desktop and array microphone all in a regular mic jack on both my laptop and desktop. Same results for each.
