Windows 7 asking for thoughts on posting a sensitive doc to a cloud

hi Pat, I'd like to read your interpretation of "delete" please. I was in IT software development for many years so I'm guessing that you're saying any file put on OneDrive is automatically cached/backed up even if a file touches OneDrive briefly. Is that it? Even so, the path to cracking my...

Windows 7 asking for thoughts on posting a sensitive doc to a cloud

thanks for your thoughts bassfisher and whs. I fully understand the danger in posting sensitive data externally. And on the other hand there's an ease of use and lesser chance of losing updates if a file is kept in one place. I've taken the additional step of password protecting my...

Windows 7 asking for thoughts on posting a sensitive doc to a cloud

Hello to all, I have a word doc with sensitive info. I've used Windows to encrypt the document. I want to be able to share and update this doc from various platforms: win7 pc, win8 pc, surface etc. Seems to me this doc belongs on OneDrive, but my question to you is, how secure would...

Windows 7 is double encryption on a Win7 file a bad idea?

Thank you for the reply Veegertx. I'll use another encryption app on top of Windows encryption and see how that works out.

Windows 7 is double encryption on a Win7 file a bad idea?

I am running Windows 7 Professional x64 on a personal, not work, laptop. I have encrypted a file using Explorer's encrypt attribute from the properties dialog. Before I put this file to a cloud storage system like Dropbox, I wanted to also use something like TrueCrypt on the file. Would it be...

Windows 7 can't launch apps after applying windows 7 updates of 12/13/2011

I uninstalled all the updates for Office 2007 Compatibility. Then I uninstalled the Office 2007 Compatibility programs thermselves. Now a new thread might be useful for what happened: I did a hard reboot (Shut down --> power on) after all this. When the notebook came back, I saw the same...

Windows 7 can't launch apps after applying windows 7 updates of 12/13/2011

Thanks for the comments Dave. I don't see Microsoft Office 2007 in the Start --> All Programs list and I don't see the name in Control Panel --> Programs, assuming it would have a name similar to Microsoft Office 2010. I mentioned/asked whether the 2007 compatibility software was present to...

Windows 7 can't launch apps after applying windows 7 updates of 12/13/2011

I bought my notebook with Office already installed. But in Word, I'll save a doc as .doc rather than .docx so other folks can read it. Is that where 2007 compatibility kicks in? I'm done. I don't understand what happened, but I'll describe what I did. I ran the Office 2010 updates first then...

Windows 7 can't launch apps after applying windows 7 updates of 12/13/2011

I just installed the Office 2007 updates and there is no problem launching apps. So the problem is in one of the Windows 7 updates (6 updates plus the Malicious Software Removal Tool). I may install these one at a time and see if or where it breaks.

Windows 7 can't launch apps after applying windows 7 updates of 12/13/2011

I just looked in Programs and Features in the Control Panel. The only references I see to 2007 are 'Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system' and 'Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007 (English)'. Would that be enough to trigger Office 2007 updates for my laptop? Otherwise the Office...

Windows 7 can't launch apps after applying windows 7 updates of 12/13/2011

Thanks Saltgrass. I thought about uninstalling the updates one by one, but I was concerned about screwing up dependencies between updates and just breaking more stuff. If I do uninstall each dependency, would it be safer and make more sense to start with the highest KB number and work...

Windows 7 can't launch apps after applying windows 7 updates of 12/13/2011

I've seen no other updates since the updates that were made available on 12/13, and I installed on 12/14. Since I've restored to the point just before the first install, I see the same 19 important updates pending. I'll try to run an install again, and after the install I'll do a power off/on...

Windows 7 can't launch apps after applying windows 7 updates of 12/13/2011

Thanks Elmer. I'll give that a shot, but not right now. Feels like I've spent a lot of time today installing then restoring. It's very frustrating. I haven't had a problem with Windows updates since I bought this laptop in 2010. I will try it again and will post the results. Thanks for your...

Windows 7 can't launch apps after applying windows 7 updates of 12/13/2011

Trouble, the suggestions to open an app directly and replace its icon in the taskbar did not work. First I returned to the restore point taken by windows update before the first attempt to install the updates this morning. Then I selected just the 7 windows updates as listed above. They all...
