Creating extra Tiles in Metro I have sorted out various extra tile, for programmes etc but does anyone know how to get a tile to shut down the computer. It would make for handy shutting down and I have seen some screen shots with this.

Well, in that case, Andrea, stick with Windows 7 and stop posting about an OS you are not going to use.

Andrea, Come on - you can buy laptops with Linux already installed - so no secure boot. There again, if there is secure boot I am sure someone will develop software to un-secure it - look at phone rooting.

if you, like me, don't like the progress of Windows, there are other choices. Linux in all sort of editions provide all sorts of desktops and you can choose what what you have. All the software, OS and applications come free and there is a huge community to support you. Given what Microsoft...

So, Andrea, Windows 8 doesn't suit you - its doesn't really suit me either. Why not juts stick with Windows 7 and forget Windows 8. There'll be another version of Windows along soon enough.

I certainly think that Microsoft is after the tablet market that Apple has at the moment Cat, but I don't think that a tablet operating system runs well on a PC. The thing comes down to money, I suppose. I expect I will be asked to pay £70 or more for a new OS, (Windows 8) yet I still don't know...

Windows 8 Win 8 and me

Well, I haven't been here for a while but I have been working with Windows 8, though I admit to having put Windows 7 back on my main desktop. 1 have an SSD as my boot drive and so i do not really see any difference in the very short boot times between the two OSs. I note that while some thing...

That looks great but it also looks like a lot of work to achieve. It seems to me that this sort of stuff is what Windows 7 did by it self in the Start Menu whilst Windows 8 only provides the Metro Interface for it. If this is way forward, I think I'll have to check up what 'forward' means.

Windows 8 Win 8 and me

So, it is really the shell and the apps which are going to sell (or not sell) Windows 8. There's a surprise! I am going to try the OS for a week and see how I get on but I suspect that the mini-apps in Google Chrome's browser may well do the job as well, along with desktop gadgets, as the new...

Windows 8 Win 8 and me

I'm not that keen on the Metro interface as I said earlier. This thread is nearly all about this one feature though. Does anyone know if there is more under the hood apart from the shell we have to use?

Windows 8 Win 8 and me

I've just downloaded Classic Shell and will load in onto the Windows 8 installation and see how it goes. however, it doesn't really answer the main question which is, in its original form with Metro, it is a pad operating system not a desktop one. The desktop should have its own front end and...

Windows 8 Win 8 and me

That's what I thought. I think they have decided to go all out to grab some of the iPad action and to stimulate the Windows Phone market as well and assumed that desktops were on the way out. I think if this is the plan they are a long way out of touch with the real world. Offices and...

Windows 8 Win 8 and me

This is just what i was looking for but, sadly, the Consumer Preview I installed doesn't have this key to change. Anyone any idea how to mange this trick in this newer version?
