A tiny PC with a heavyweight case
The reported gold Kubb weighs 13 kg (28.7 lb). Kubb lists the standard aluminum Fanless at 2.1 kg (4.6 lb), despite the same compact 120 × 120 × 120 mm form. That makes the custom machine more than six times as heavy as its ordinary counterpart. This is a desktop showpiece, not a particularly convenient PC to carry between desks. The reported $1.7 million figure describes the commission; it is not a retail price for a standard Kubb configuration.
Nor is it a gaming console, despite the source headline. Kubb markets the Fanless as a mini PC for work and home use. Its case doubles as a passive heat sink: fins increase the surface available to release heat without a cooling fan. That design—not the gold—is what makes the machine relevant to anyone interested in a quiet Windows desktop.
Does gold actually cool it better?
Gold conducts heat better than aluminum in the materials comparison cited by Tom’s Hardware: 314 versus 205 W/m·K. But that number alone cannot establish that this finished PC runs cooler, sustains higher processor speeds, or performs better in games. Heat still has to travel from the chip through the complete assembly and into the surrounding air. No controlled comparison of the gold and aluminum machines accompanies the reported commission. Copper also has a higher cited thermal-conductivity figure than gold, which rather spoils any claim that precious metal was the only route to better passive cooling.
The practical distinction: a promising material property is not a benchmark result.
What Windows users can—and cannot—take from the specs
Kubb’s current listing offers standard Fanless configurations with an Intel Core Ultra 5 225H, Intel Core Ultra X7 358H, or AMD Ryzen AI 5 340. It lists 16 GB of DDR5 memory with options up to 128 GB, a 1 TB NVMe SSD with an optional second drive, and ports that vary by processor platform. The listing describes Windows 11 Pro as an optional preinstallation, not a confirmed feature of every unit.
Those are specifications for the regular product range. Reporting on the gold commission does not identify its exact processor, memory, storage, Windows installation, temperatures, or benchmark scores. Assigning it the strongest listed chip—or calling it the year’s ultimate gaming PC—would be guesswork.
The gold Kubb is an arresting demonstration of how far PC customization can go. For someone choosing a quiet Windows mini PC, however, the useful questions remain decidedly less glamorous: which configuration is being offered, which ports does it have, and how does it perform under sustained load? On the custom gold machine, the last question remains unanswered.
