What the video covers
The video's description says the reviewer looks at the design, the mechanical switches, the hot-swappable PCB, the programmable buttons, the wireless options, the charging dock, the battery life and the PC customization software. It also asks whether the pair are just pretty peripherals or a good everyday and gaming setup. The description discloses that the creator earns commissions on qualifying Amazon purchases. That doesn't undermine the review, but the specs below come from the manufacturer and press, and the verdict comes from the reviewer.
The lineup
8BitDo announced three Designed-for-Xbox products with a cozy theme: the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard and Retro R8 Mouse in Forest Wonder, and the Ultimate 3 Controller for Xbox in Mossy Lagoon. The video focuses on the keyboard and mouse. Notebookcheck says the Forest Wonder editions are the latest iterations of the existing Retro 87 and Retro R8. This is a recolored version of known hardware, not a new platform. Xbox Wire's launch post says the products are featured alongside the controller on 8BitDo's collection page.
The keyboard and mouse are not a single bundle. 8BitDo's product materials for the same Retro 87/R8 family say they are sold separately, and the shop lists them as separate items.
The keyboard
- Switches: Notebookcheck and Vortez describe 8BitDo Core Green Tactile Mechanical Switches, co-developed with Kailh. The Gears of War edition uses different Cloud Gray linear switches, so don't carry that spec over to the Cozy edition.
- Hot-swap: The PCB is hot-swappable, so switches can be replaced without soldering, and the keycaps are dye-sublimation PBT.
- Controls: A control panel handles connections, volume and button mapping. The Xbox button opens the Windows Game Bar with one press.
- Super Buttons: Two large programmable Dual Super Buttons can hold macros or other functions, and fast mapping works without software. In the family specs, these are a separate accessory, not keys on the board.
- Connectivity and battery (family specs): Bluetooth 5.3 LE, 2.4 GHz wireless and USB-C wired. The 4,000 mAh battery is rated at 280 hours on 2.4 GHz and 300 hours on Bluetooth. Treat those as manufacturer estimates, not test results.
- Software: 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 on Windows handles key mapping and macros. The family spec lists Windows 10 (1903) and later. Confirm that the Forest Wonder SKU carries the same statement.
The mouse
- Sensor and weight: 8BitDo lists a PixArt PAW 3395 sensor and a weight of 77 g.
- Dock: The dock charges the mouse, extends the wireless signal and stores the 2.4 GHz adapter. PC Gamer, reviewing the standard R8, says the dock can act as the wireless receiver when the dongle sits in it. 8BitDo's support FAQ says the dock can't charge mice from other brands.
- Buttons: There are four programmable side buttons.
- Battery (manufacturer figures): 100 hours on Bluetooth and 26–105 hours on 2.4 GHz, depending on polling rate.
- Polling rates: The top rate is wired only. The family spec gives 250–8,000 Hz wired, 250–4,000 Hz on 2.4 GHz and 125 Hz on Bluetooth. A headline of "8,000 Hz" therefore applies to the cable, not the wireless modes.
- Configuration limit: 8BitDo's FAQ says Ultimate Software V2 can't configure the mouse over Bluetooth. You need a wired or 2.4 GHz connection. Bluetooth also pairs with one device at a time. The FAQ says the mouse has no hot-swappable microswitches.
- Polling-rate warning: 8BitDo notes that polling above 2,000 Hz may drain the battery faster and load the system more.
Independent context from PC Gamer
PC Gamer's review of the standard Retro R8 (the N Edition, not Forest Wonder) praised its look, dock and price. It criticized the niche ergonomics and the USB-only 8K polling. The reviewer noted that the side buttons are recessed into the frame, so you have to get leverage on the opposite side to reach them. Forest Wonder shares the R8's shape and specs, so this is a reasonable thing to expect. The collection page and Xbox Wire don't say the Forest Wonder mouse has been changed in shape, and Notebookcheck says its specs are identical to the Xbox Edition.
Pricing and availability
Notebookcheck reported the keyboard at $119.99 and the mouse at $59.99 on 8BitDo's eShop and Amazon. Other outlets reported the same US prices. Aroged, on October 1, described Amazon listings as pre-orders in Europe at €119.99 and €59.99. Stock and prices change, so check a live listing before you buy.
Buyer's checklist
- Decide whether you want the tactile Kailh-based switches. The linear switches on other Retro 87 editions are a different product.
- If you plan to use the mouse over Bluetooth, expect no software configuration and a fixed 125 Hz polling rate.
- For 8,000 Hz polling, plan to use the cable.
- Try the recessed side buttons if you can, or check return terms.
- Treat the battery figures as manufacturer ratings, and watch the reviewer's own results in the video.
Bottom line
The Cozy Collection keyboard and mouse are mainly a theme change on a well-specified peripheral family. The practical limits are the wired-only 8K polling, the Bluetooth configuration restriction and the unusual side-button design. Whether the pair is a great everyday setup is the reviewer's call, and the video is the place to hear it.
