Bandai Namco has acknowledged that online matchmaking in Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is harder to establish than intended on PC. Its advice for PC players is to check two things: the Windows version and the drive the game is installed on. The advice is useful, but it is not a fix. The company calls it one possible factor in an investigation that is still running.

A gaming PC setup is shown beneath fighter jets, with an overlay displaying multiplayer matchmaking status. What Bandai Namco actually said

The publisher posted a notice on the game's Steam news page titled "Upcoming Update Plans for ACE COMBAT 8 and Matchmaking Status in ONLINE MODE." It says the PC version of the game has a full online mode with crossplay, built around an air base lobby. That makes matchmaking central to the PC release.

The notice says Bandai Namco has confirmed that mission matchmaking may be harder to establish than intended in certain environments. Its investigation found that one contributing factor may be connections from setups that don't meet the game's system requirements. The company says ACE COMBAT ONLINE was developed and tested against the environments in the official requirements.

It also says an unsupported setup can affect more than the player using it. Other players in the same matchmaking session may feel the effects too. That is the publisher's explanation of why it is raising the point publicly.

The two checks

Bandai Namco asks PC players to review two points.

  1. Play on Windows 11. The game is officially supported on Windows 11. The publisher says other operating systems may behave differently from its test environment and recommends Windows 11 for the most consistent experience.
  2. Install the game on an SSD. Bandai Namco says it has confirmed cases of the game being played from an HDD. It says an HDD may affect loading times and overall system stability, which can also affect matchmaking quality.

Windows 10 users and HDD installs are the obvious groups affected. The notice doesn't name Windows 10, though. It says only that "other operating systems" may behave differently.

How this fits the published requirements

Neither check is new. Steam lists Windows 11 for both the minimum and recommended configurations. The PC version needs Windows 11, a graphics card with hardware ray tracing and an SSD. The Steam page's notes add DirectX 12 with Shader Model 6.6 or higher.

Steam's listing gives these figures:

MinimumRecommended
OSWindows 11Windows 11
CPUIntel Core i7-10700K / AMD Ryzen 5 3600XIntel Core i7-12700K / AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
RAM16 GB32 GB
GPURTX 2060 (6 GB) / RX 6600 XT (8 GB)RTX 3070 (8 GB) / RX 6800 (16 GB)
Storage150 GB, SSD required150 GB, SSD required
Target1080p upscaled, 30 fps, Low1080p upscaled, 60 fps, Medium

The listing I reviewed shows 150 GB of storage. Third-party coverage also puts it at 150 GB on an SSD at minimum. Some secondary summaries cite a different figure, so check the live Steam page before you clear space.

The Steam page also shows Easy Anti-Cheat and Denuvo. Neither is blamed in the notice, and I am not suggesting they are.

Don't confuse this with ST-3100001

A separate Bandai Namco notice from September 30 covers error code ST-3100001. It says the code appears when communication with the game server is lost. The suggested step is to check for a time discrepancy, synchronize the time on Windows, and test the game again.

That is a specific fix for a specific error. The matchmaking notice does not link the two, and nothing in either notice says clock drift explains the wider matchmaking trouble.

Player reports are mixed. One Steam discussion started on October 1 describes a player who could reach lobbies but timed out when queuing for a mission, with that error. One commenter says the problem is a known issue tied to clock accuracy. Others say they synchronized their clocks and saw no improvement. These are anecdotes. They do not show the clock fix works or fails in general.

Practical checklist for PC players

  1. Confirm your OS. Open Settings, go to System, then About, and check that you are on Windows 11.
  2. Check the install drive. In the Steam library, open the game's properties and look at its installed files. Confirm it sits on an SSD rather than a mechanical drive. If it doesn't, Steam can move an install between library folders.
  3. Check your hardware against the table above. The listing includes a ray-tracing-capable GPU and DirectX 12 with Shader Model 6.6.
  4. For ST-3100001 only, resync the Windows clock and retest, as Bandai Namco advises.
  5. If you crash, use the PC Crash Report Thread that Bandai Namco opened on October 2. It asks for your GPU, CPU and RAM, your Windows version and system software, a description of the issue with any error message and reproduction steps, and a list of other running applications if possible.

Meeting these requirements does not guarantee a smooth matchmaking session. The publisher says only that unsupported setups are one possible contributor.

What is still unknown

  • No fix has shipped. Bandai Namco says it is preparing an update with fixes for some reported issues and gameplay adjustments. Release timing and contents will be announced once finalized. The notice gives no patch date.
  • The server side is unaddressed. The notice puts the focus on player environments. Players may reasonably wonder how much of the trouble sits with the publisher's own matchmaking, and the notice doesn't say.
  • The HDD claim is a recommendation. The notice cites confirmed HDD installs, but it does not say how many players are affected.

The wider context is a game that launched strongly, with Bandai Namco's own Steam notice reporting a million sales. Even so, the launch has drawn complaints about crashes and flight-stick support, and the studio has acknowledged those too.

Bottom line

If you are on Windows 11 with an SSD install, you have already met the two checks Bandai Namco is asking for. If you are on an older OS or a mechanical drive, you are outside the supported setup. The publisher says that can degrade matchmaking for you and for others in your sessions. For everyone else, the answer is to wait for the promised update.
