Acer's Predator Atlas 8 is a Windows 11 handheld with a big 8-inch screen, and Tom's Guide reviewed it after two weeks of use. The reviewer says it nearly replaced their gaming PC. The review is a single-unit product test, and it doesn't show that handhelds can replace desktops in general. Even so, it is one of the clearer looks at where Windows handhelds stand now. Hardware has pulled well ahead of the software that runs on it.

Acer announced the Predator Atlas 8 (model PA08-I51) on May 28, 2026. Notebookcheck calls it Acer's first handheld console for the US market. The announcement said it would reach North America, EMEA and Australia from October 2026. Acer also said specifications, prices and availability vary by region.

The headline hardware is Intel's Arc G3 Extreme, which pairs with Arc B390 graphics. The Shortcut describes it as Intel's first chip designed specifically for this type of gaming device. A lower Arc G3 tier with Arc B370 graphics also exists.

Acer's published specs include:

  • An 8-inch, 1920 × 1200, 16:10 touchscreen with 120Hz refresh and VRR.
  • 500 nits of peak brightness and Gorilla Glass Victus with DXC.
  • Up to 24GB of LPDDR5x and up to 1TB of PCIe Gen 4 storage.
  • Up to an 80Wh battery.
  • Two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a UHS-II microSD slot and a combo audio jack.
  • Dual-fan cooling, which Acer calls Predator AeroBlade, with one metal fan and one plastic fan.
  • Windows 11 Home with PredatorSense, plus bundled Game Pass subscriptions.

These are manufacturer claims. Acer's airflow and "first metal fan" statements come from its own internal research and testing.

Price and configurations

Tom's Guide lists a $999 / £999 starting model with Arc G3, 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. The tested Arc G3 Extreme unit, with 24GB and 1TB, costs $1,299 / £1,299. The review also mentions a UK 32GB model at £1,499. That is above Acer's "up to 24GB" spec, so treat it as a regional listing that needs confirming.

For the US, the picture looks narrower. Notebookcheck reports that at US sale it will only come with the Arc G3 Extreme and 24GB of memory. HandheldPicker says it reached Best Buy on November 1 at $1,299.99. That site's own page says its verdict is not a hands-on lab review, so treat the retail detail as a lead and check it before you buy. Specs may differ by retailer.

Performance: the review's numbers

Tom's Guide ran 3DMark and Geekbench against the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+, which uses the same chip, and the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X.

TestAtlas 8MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ROG Xbox Ally X
Fire Strike11,56312,3589,141
Time Spy6,1556,5344,033
Steel Nomad1,0641,425609
Geekbench single / multi2,408 / 14,1162,492 / 12,5502,788 / 12,883

The Atlas scored below the MSI machine. The reviewer blames its 24GB of memory against the MSI's 32GB. The review gives no controlled test that would confirm memory is the cause. The Atlas also has no Port Royal result in the table.

At 35W, the review's game results at 1080p were:

  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider (High): 83 FPS on the Atlas, against 66 on the MSI and 31 on the Asus.
  • Cyberpunk 2077 (ray tracing High): 24 FPS, against 17 and 8.
  • Black Myth: Wukong (Cinematic): 17 FPS, against 14 and 11.

The reviewer also reports about 47 FPS in Black Myth: Wukong at 1200p on Medium settings. With XeSS upscaling and frame generation, Cyberpunk 2077 passed 90 FPS at 1200p with High settings and ray tracing. Star Wars: Galactic Racer cleared 70 FPS, and Gears of War: E-Day approached 90 FPS.

Other outlets point the same way, with some differences in the numbers. Notebookcheck cites YouTuber ETA Prime's testing, which put the Arc G3 Extreme well ahead of the Ryzen Z2 Extreme. In its 35W Time Spy run the Atlas scored 6,607 against 4,091 for the Asus. The same report notes that the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ passed 7,000, so the Atlas is not the fastest Arc G3 Extreme handheld. That matches the Tom's Guide ranking. Scores differ between testers, as you'd expect with different units, drivers and power settings.

Battery

PredatorSense offers Quiet (25W), Balanced (30W) and Turbo (35W) modes. You can also set power manually from 10W to 40W. The system allows up to 65W in short bursts but does not recommend it.

Tom's Guide's results:

  • 3DMark battery test: 3 hours 48 minutes, against 4:10 for the MSI and 2:56 for the Asus.
  • Gears of War: E-Day at 35W: 1 hour 35 minutes.
  • Cyberpunk 2077 at 35W: 1 hour 41 minutes.
  • Star Wars: Galactic Racer at 25W: 2 hours 24 minutes.
  • Light games at 10–15W: about 15% battery used per hour.

These are test-specific figures, not everyday guarantees. Demanding games at 35W drain the battery fast, and that is the normal trade-off for handhelds. PC Guide's review lists battery life in intense games as a weakness.

Where it falls short

Hardware

  • The D-pad feels mushy. The reviewer struggled with charge-motion inputs in Street Fighter 6.
  • Adjustable triggers sometimes missed inputs, including weapon fire, when set to short travel. The reviewer says this may be a fault with their unit.
  • The rear macro buttons feel less premium than the rest of the controls.
  • At 1.79 pounds and 11.7 × 5 × 2.2 inches, it is big. The reviewer felt aches while travelling. It is lighter than the Legion Go 2 (2.09 pounds) but heavier than the ROG Xbox Ally X20 (1.67 pounds) and the Claw 8 EX AI+ (1.7 pounds).

Windows and Xbox Mode

  • The Xbox overlay sometimes needed repeated menu presses, or an app switch, before it appeared.
  • Sleep via the power button behaved inconsistently.
  • In desktop mode, the on-screen keyboard sometimes failed to show up in Steam, and the Xbox app could stay open without being visible.

The reviewer notes Windows 11 on handhelds is still less clean than SteamOS, though better than before. These are observations from one review unit, not confirmed system-wide bugs. PC Guide also says Windows is still not a perfect experience on this device.

XeSS 3 support

XeSS 3 with Multi-Frame Generation works in only some games. The reviewer names Star Wars: Galactic Racer, Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced and Forza Horizon 6 as supported. Halo: Campaign Evolved supports XeSS 3 but, per the review, not in the Microsoft Store version. The reviewer says you would need the Steam copy to use it. Acer and Intel both note that these features depend on supported titles, drivers and configuration.

What this means for buyers

  • Value: The price comparison is the review's main argument. It costs less than the $1,799 MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ and the same as the ROG Xbox Ally X20, and it is faster than the Asus in the review's tests.
  • The headline claim: "Almost ditching a PC" fits the review's own findings. The device performs well in many games, and Thunderbolt 4 supports docking. It still depends on Windows quirks and on which games support XeSS 3.
  • Store choice: If you rely on XeSS 3, check each game's support on your chosen store before you buy.
  • Comfort: Try the weight in your hands before committing, especially if you plan long sessions without somewhere to rest your elbows.
  • Other reviews: Different outlets disagree on the finer points. Geeky Gadgets cites an 860g weight and up to 32GB of RAM, and Acer's own figure is under 810g with the 80Wh battery. Check which configuration you are looking at.

Bottom line

The Atlas 8 shows that Intel's handheld silicon can compete with, and in several tests beat, the AMD chip in the ROG Xbox Ally X. It is let down by an average D-pad, possible trigger faults and Windows rough edges. For a $1,299 handheld those flaws are real but not fatal. The Windows software around the hardware is still the weakest part of the package.
