Armored warriors watch a fleet of ships approach a fortified coastal city beneath snow-capped mountains.
The Viking Sagas, the new paid expansion for Microsoft's Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, is out now on Steam, the Microsoft Store, Xbox and PlayStation 5. It adds the Danes, Saxons and Varangians as playable civilizations, plus a 15-scenario campaign about Harald Hardrada. World's Edge released it on September 22, 2026, and Xbox Wire followed with its own announcement on September 23. You need the base game to play it. Existing owners also get a free rework of the original Vikings civilization and updated historical battles, whether they buy the DLC or not. So there are two separate questions here: whether to pay about $20 for the new content, and what changes in your install either way.

The Viking Sagas Launches on PC, Xbox and PS5 as an Add-On for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition

World's Edge, the Microsoft studio that runs the Age of Empires series, posted the launch announcement on September 22. It said The Viking Sagas for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is available now, bringing three brand new civilizations, 15 new single player campaign scenarios, and much more. The date matches the pre-order announcement, which said the expansion was available now for pre-order on Steam, Microsoft Store, and XBOX with a 15% discount and launches on September 22, 2026. Xbox Wire's post, credited to editor-in-chief Joe Skrebels, went up the next day. It announced a release that was already live.

The storefronts agree. Microsoft's Xbox Store listing gives a release date of 9/22/2026 and lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC as supported platforms. Xbox Game Studios is the publisher. The developer credits name World's Edge, Forgotten Empires, Tantalus, Wicked Witch and CaptureAge. At launch, World's Edge said the DLC was available on Steam, Microsoft Store, Xbox and PlayStation 5. The PS5 version came later than the others: the studio's FAQ had said it would go on sale in the PlayStation Store on launch day, after the other stores had been taking pre-orders.

Mac players are covered through Feral Interactive's port. Feral and World's Edge had announced that The Viking Sagas expansion for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will release for macOS via Steam on September 22nd, and Feral confirmed on its product page that it shipped that day.

Danes, Saxons and Varangians Split the Old Viking Civilization Three Ways

The main addition for multiplayer and skirmish players is three new civilizations. World's Edge says each comes with their own unique units, technologies, and shared architecture. Microsoft's store listing describes the three playstyles in more detail:

  • The Danes are built to pressure opponents early with swift longships to strike without warning. Their unique unit, the Jomsviking, is a fast, tough infantry unit that throws flaming torches at enemy buildings and ships.
  • The Saxons focus on fortified towns that hold territory against invasions. Their unique unit is the Hearth Troop, a heavy infantryman that opens fights with a ranged javelin before closing in for intense melee combat.
  • The Varangians are built around rivers, cavalry and flexibility as mercenaries. Their unique unit, the Jarl, is a cavalry unit that throws axes and does particular damage to infantry.

The expansion also adds shared regional units. World's Edge lists them as Varangian Guard, Mounted Crossbowman, and Longship. The store listing describes Varangian Guards as shock infantry that earn gold while they fight, Mounted Crossbowmen as hard-hitting but slow-firing ranged cavalry, and Longships as fast, versatile warships.

This also changes what the existing Vikings civilization represents. Before, one pan-Scandinavian civilization covered the whole Norse world. The fan-run Age of Empires wiki notes that with the Varangians drawn largely from Sweden and the Danes now separate, the Viking civilization may now, by process of elimination, primarily represent Norway. That is the wiki's interpretation, not an official statement. It fits the official FAQ, though, which ties the Danes to Denmark, the Saxons to England, and the Varangians to Sweden and Eastern Europe.

Harald Hardrada's Three-Part Campaign Anchors the Paid Content

For single-player fans, the campaign is the main draw. World's Edge calls it a sweeping 15 scenario three-campaign epic covering Scandinavia, Constantinople and the Viking invasion of England. The three parts are The Exiled Prince, The Hard Ruler and The Last Viking. The store listing pairs each one with the civilizations you play: Vikings and Varangians, then Danes and Vikings, then Saxons and Vikings.

The official FAQ lays out the story. It starts with Harald's exile after the Battle of Stiklestad and his journey through the Kyivan Rus to Constantinople. Next come his fights with Svein Estridsson and Magnus Olafsson over Norway and Denmark. It ends with the 1066 invasion of England that leads to Stamford Bridge.

The fan wiki reports two structural details that World's Edge's launch post doesn't mention. It says the choices taken in scenarios carry over to future ones. Although comprising a single grand narrative, the campaigns are nonetheless separate and can be played in any order. It also describes a new collectible called Legendary Treasures, which gives bonuses to your heroes and army. Treat these as the wiki's reports until you see them in the game.

Free Vikings Rework and Updated Battles Reach Every Definitive Edition Owner

The most useful detail for current players is how the content is split. Some Viking-themed changes come with the base game, not the paid DLC. The official FAQ says the reworked Vikings civilization is available to everyone who owns Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. It states plainly that all improvements to the Vikings are free for all players of the game.

The free changes go further than the Vikings. The FAQ says:

  • Changes to legacy campaign missions are available to every base-game owner.
  • The Hastings, Vinlandsaga and York historical battles have been updated to use the new civilizations and units, free for all players.
  • Several Victors & Vanquished scenarios have also been updated.
  • The old Longboat is now called the Longship. It is a regional ship for the Vikings, Danes, Saxons and Varangians, and World's Edge says its core design is unchanged apart from some adjustments.

In practice, a player who never buys The Viking Sagas will still see a different Vikings civilization, a renamed and adjusted Longship, and updated Norse historical battles after the release update. For ranked players who main the Vikings, the rework changes their civilization whether they buy anything or not. World's Edge has published update notes alongside the launch. The fan wiki says the expansion released alongside update 185872 with 13 new achievements. That build number doesn't appear in World's Edge's launch post or on the store pages, so don't treat it as an official minimum version.

What The Viking Sagas Requires on Windows PC and Xbox

It isn't a standalone game. The Steam listing says this content requires the base game Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition on Steam in order to play. Microsoft's Xbox Store listing says the same: the add-on requires a game, sold separately, and lists Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition as the game it works with. Note that the Steam wording is tied to Steam. A Steam copy of the DLC needs the Steam base game, and the Microsoft Store listing links to the Microsoft Store version. None of the reviewed sources say whether a DLC purchase carries over between those two PC storefronts, so buy it in the store where you already own the base game.

Console players have one more requirement. The Xbox listing says online multiplayer on console requires Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate, sold separately. That's Microsoft's standard console multiplayer rule, and the listing says nothing about needing it for the single-player campaign.

The Xbox Store listing rates the content Teen for mild blood, mild language and violence, with users interacting. Parents using Xbox Family Settings on a shared console or PC should know that.

On price, the Xbox Store showed $19.99 in the US. During the pre-order period Steam, the Microsoft Store and Xbox all offered 15% off. When World's Edge's store listing was checked around launch, the Xbox US page showed a temporary sale price of $16.99. Store prices change, so check your region's store before you buy.

What this means for you

If you own Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, the main choice is whether the campaign and the three new civilizations are worth about $20 to you. Either way, your install gets the free Vikings rework and updated battles. Campaign players get the most from the purchase, since 15 new scenarios is a lot of single-player content. Multiplayer players should know that opponents can field the Danes, Saxons and Varangians only if they own the DLC. And if you play the Vikings online, expect them to handle differently after the update.

  • The Viking Sagas went on sale September 22, 2026, on Steam, the Microsoft Store, Xbox and PS5, with a macOS version on Steam from Feral Interactive. Xbox Wire announced it the next day.
  • You need Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition to play it. Buy the DLC in the same store where you own the base game.
  • The paid content is the Danes, Saxons and Varangians, their unique units, and the 15-scenario Harald Hardrada campaign.
  • The Vikings rework, the renamed Longship, the legacy campaign changes and the updated Hastings, Vinlandsaga and York battles are free for every base-game owner.
  • Online multiplayer on Xbox consoles requires Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate. The store listing doesn't say you need a subscription for single-player.
  • The listed US price is $19.99, and sales change often, so check your regional store before buying.

The Viking Sagas follows the pattern Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition has used for years: paid DLC for new civilizations and campaigns, paired with free changes that reach everyone who owns the game. This release is simultaneous across Steam, the Microsoft Store, Xbox and PS5, with Mac included through Feral. The next thing that affects players is balance. Three new civilizations and a reworked Vikings are now in public matchmaking, and World's Edge's follow-up patches will decide where they settle in the competitive game.
