What Microsoft and AMD have said
AMD has confirmed that FSR Upscaling 4.1 is coming to Xbox Series X and Series S. That is the nearer-term story. FSR Diamond is a separate, later technology.
Microsoft introduced Project Helix at GDC on March 11, 2026. Jason Ronald, Xbox's VP of Next Generation, wrote that Project Helix is powered by a custom AMD SoC and co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. Wait, that wording belongs to Microsoft's own post. In that post, Microsoft said the console integrates intelligence directly into the graphics and compute pipeline and claimed an "order of magnitude leap" in ray-tracing performance and capability. It also said it plans to ship alpha hardware to developers beginning in 2027. Microsoft's own post calls the technology "FSR Next." It did not publish hardware specifications or a consumer release date.
AMD's Jack Huynh supplied the "Diamond" name. PC Gamer reports that his post name-checked next-generation machine learning upscaling, multi-frame generation, and Ray Regeneration. VideoCardz adds that Huynh described the technology as natively optimized for Project Helix and deeply integrated into the Xbox GDK.
The three pieces, in plain terms
These are explanations of the categories. They are not verified performance claims about Diamond.
- ML upscaling: The game renders at a lower resolution and the model reconstructs a higher-resolution image. The aim is to lower GPU workload while keeping detail.
- ML multi-frame generation: The system creates additional frames between rendered ones, which raises the displayed frame rate. VideoCardz notes this is the headline new capability. FSR 4 and Redstone only support single-frame generation is paraphrased from its comparison. Generated frames do not raise how often the game simulates or samples input, so a higher frame counter does not by itself mean better responsiveness.
- Ray regeneration: AMD's name for ML-assisted cleanup of ray-traced and path-traced output. The common term for this kind of feature is ray reconstruction. No public Helix benchmark shows its cost, quality or supported lighting modes.
Claims that need a caution label
NoobFeed's piece goes further than the public record. It says Diamond turns 1080p into clean 4K with no shimmering or ghosting. It says a 40fps base render becomes 120fps. It says Helix can run full path tracing at playable frame rates. It also says Diamond is built on "dedicated matrix hardware."
I found no Microsoft or AMD statement or demonstration that confirms any of these specifics. Treat them as plausible goals at best. Microsoft has confirmed a custom AMD SoC and AI integrated into the graphics pipeline. It has not detailed the accelerator blocks.
Diamond versus FSR 4.1
| FSR 4.1 | FSR Diamond | |
|---|---|---|
| Target | Xbox Series X | S, ROG Xbox Ally handhelds, supported PC hardware |
| Status | Coming soon to both Xbox Series X and Series S, with no exact date or game list | Planned. Helix alpha hardware reaches developers in 2027 |
| Features | ML upscaling | ML upscaling, multi-frame generation, ray regeneration |
Reports differ on how FSR 4.1 reaches games. One outlet says developers will need to implement it game by game, not as a blanket system-level upgrade. VideoCardz says Microsoft has not explained whether existing games will need individual updates. Neither claim settles the question, so don't assume your current library will improve automatically.
Separately, a handheld preview applies only to the Xbox Ally. One report says that preview's October 23 release date does not apply to Microsoft's consoles.
PC angle and unanswered questions
PC Gamer argues that Xbox and PC are converging, so a related FSR generation for PC GPUs seems likely. It treats that as speculation. VideoCardz suggests Diamond targets RDNA 5 and cites a leaker's claim of RDNA 5 exclusivity. That is not confirmed. VideoCardz itself says neither AMD nor Microsoft has confirmed RDNA5 as the GPU backbone is paraphrased from its earlier report. Neither company has said which PC GPUs, if any, will support Diamond.
Versus DLSS and PSSR
Nvidia's DLSS and Sony's PSSR already ship in games. Diamond has no public Helix game results. Any head-to-head comparison has to wait for hardware, shipping titles and independent testing. Until then, the fair reading is that AMD and Microsoft have confirmed the feature set and the partnership. They have not confirmed image quality, latency or frame-rate outcomes.
Bottom line
Microsoft and AMD have confirmed that Project Helix uses a co-designed AMD SoC with FSR-based AI features. AMD has named the stack Diamond and listed three components. Everything about resolution targets, frame multipliers and path-tracing viability is still unproven. Watch for developer documentation, GDK details and alpha hardware news in 2027.
