HAMSTER Corporation has added another 1980 TAITO cabinet to its Arcade Archives 2 line. Windows players get it on day one this time. Arcade Archives 2 CRAZY BALLOON came out on October 1, 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC. HAMSTER's Japanese release notice says the PC version supports Xbox Play Anywhere. That's the part that matters most for WindowsForum readers: one Xbox Store purchase covers both the console and the PC.

What the game is

In HAMSTER's description, CRAZY BALLOON is a TAITO action game from 1980. You steer a balloon that keeps swaying left and right through a maze of thorns and try to reach the goal. Along the way, thorns move without warning and whole mazes scroll. Wikipedia's entry adds detail from the original arcade release. It was released in Japan in March 1980 and Europe the same year. Using a four-way joystick, the player moves the box through the maze and toward the goal, ensuring that the swinging balloon avoids the spikes. You also can't stall to plan your next move. While there is no time limit, the player cannot wait for a long time; otherwise, a face will appear and blow the balloon into the spikes.

The game has been on Microsoft platforms before. The original arcade version is included in emulated compilations such as Taito Legends 2 (PlayStation 2, Xbox and Microsoft Windows). That compilation is about two decades old, though, and this is a standalone release on current Microsoft hardware.

Summary: It's a short, punishing 1980 maze game, and it returns to Xbox and Windows as a single-title purchase.

Platforms, price and the date discrepancy

DetailWhat the sources say
PlatformsSwitch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC (Xbox Play Anywhere)
U.S. price (Xbox Store)$9.99
Japanese price (HAMSTER)¥1,100, tax included
RatingIARC 3+ (HAMSTER); ESRB Everyone (U.S. Xbox Store)
Players1–2, local only
LanguagesJapanese, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish (options menu and manual only)

HAMSTER's announcement and product page both give October 1, 2026 as the release date. Microsoft's U.S. Xbox Store page shows 9/30/2026. Neither source explains the difference. One plausible reason is the time-zone gap between a Japanese midnight launch and U.S. store listings, but that's a guess and nobody has confirmed it.

TrueAchievements adds a few practical details that neither publisher lists. It describes the release as Digital only, with a download size of 88MB, and shows the PC platform as Windows (Windows 10). Storage won't be a problem.

What the "2" edition adds

The standard Arcade Archives features carry over: difficulty and screen settings, remappable buttons, rapid-fire, multiple save slots, rewind and online leaderboards. HAMSTER and the Xbox listing say Arcade Archives 2 adds two things:

  • Time Attack Mode. It joins Original, Hi Score and Caravan modes. The goal is to clear the game as fast as possible, and your score doesn't count.
  • Variable refresh rate (VRR) support. HAMSTER says VRR helps reproduce the original arcade game's behaviour more closely. Old arcade boards often ran at refresh rates that don't match a modern 60Hz display, so this is about accuracy more than looks. The sources don't say how VRR works on each platform, so don't assume your PC monitor or TV setup will behave the same way as someone else's.

The Xbox Store also lists two-player local multiplayer, 4K Ultra HD, achievements, cloud saves, Optimized for Xbox Series X|S and a Handheld Optimized label. Those are storefront labels only, and neither the store nor HAMSTER gives performance figures. HAMSTER's product page also says online versus and co-op play are not included. The online leaderboards are the only online feature, so player two has to be on your couch.

Upgrade and save caveats

  • HAMSTER lists the original Arcade Archives CRAZY BALLOON on Switch and PS4, released June 26, 2025.
  • Owners of those versions can buy the Switch 2 or PS5 edition for ¥330 on the same account. HAMSTER's discount notice covers only Switch→Switch 2 and PS4→PS5. It says nothing about an Xbox or PC upgrade price, and there was never an original Xbox edition to upgrade from.
  • Buying the "2" edition first does not get you a discount on the original later.
  • Save data does not carry over between the original and the "2" edition.

Where this fits in HAMSTER's Xbox output

Arcade Archives 2 has been showing up on Xbox regularly. Wikipedia's list of Series X|S games includes Ridge Racer, Aqua Jet, Bomb Jack Twin and Adventure Canoe from 2025 and 2026. Not every launch includes PC, though. On the same day, HAMSTER released Arcade Archives 2 BALLOON BOMBER, which Gematsu reported would launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Switch 2. The official Arcade Archives catalogue lists Windows PC for CRAZY BALLOON but not for BALLOON BOMBER. If you play on PC, check the platform list for each title rather than assuming Play Anywhere.

The bottom line

At $9.99, this isn't a big release. It is a carefully presented 1980 game with useful extras like rewind, Time Attack and VRR, and one purchase covers both Xbox and Windows through Play Anywhere. If you already own the Switch or PS4 version, the cheap upgrade only applies on Nintendo and Sony hardware, and your saves won't come with you.
