What Xbox announced
Xbox Wire's November 3 Game Pass post lists the Banjo games in a section titled "Coming to Game Pass Essential." The post says the Essential library gets these titles on November 15. It lists both Banjo games for cloud and console. It doesn't list them for PC.
Essential is the lowest of the paid tiers. Pure Xbox's roundup says Essential gets a boost on November 15, with eight games moving to the lower tier. Metacritic's Game Pass tracker also tags these titles "new to Essential."
So the news is a tier change, not a catalog debut. A commenter on Pure Xbox made this point about the headlines. Many of the games are only now accessible through the lower tiers of the subscription. ScreenRant says the same thing in its own article, noting that these games were already available through higher Game Pass tiers. Wikipedia also records that Banjo-Tooie has a long history on Microsoft platforms. Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie were first re-released on Xbox 360 through Xbox Live Arcade in 2008 and 2009.
All eight Essential additions
Xbox's list for November 15:
| Game | Platforms Xbox lists |
|---|---|
| Banjo-Kazooie | Cloud, Console |
| Banjo-Tooie | Cloud, Console |
| Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts | Cloud, Console |
| Gears of War: Judgment | Cloud, Console |
| Halo: Spartan Assault | Cloud, Console, PC |
| Perfect Dark | Cloud, Console |
| Viva Piñata | Cloud, Console |
| Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise | Cloud, Console |
Halo: Spartan Assault is the only title in the group that Xbox lists for PC. If you're a PC-only player, this batch has very little for you. Xbox's post spells the entry "Gears of War: Judgement" and shortens the last Viva Piñata title to "TIP." Outlets such as KitGuru and Games.gg use the correct spellings.
"For free" needs a footnote
ScreenRant says the games are available at no additional cost with an eligible subscription. That is the accurate version. Xbox's announcement lists no separate charge, but it also doesn't say the games are available without a subscription. They are catalog titles, not permanent licenses. Xbox's notes don't give a launch time, regional availability or any extra claim step. The "available to download" line in ScreenRant's intro also fits poorly with cloud listings, which stream rather than download. Treat cloud as streaming and console as the install option.
The review-score claim
ScreenRant's headline calls these "two 10/10 N64 games." The article body undercuts that. It says Banjo-Kazooie earned a perfect 10/10 from Nintendo Life, but Nintendo Life gave Banjo-Tooie a 9/10, with perfect scores coming only from fan reviewers.
Nintendo Life's Banjo-Kazooie review ends by calling the game one of the N64's best releases. The accurate summary is:
- Banjo-Kazooie: 10/10 at Nintendo Life.
- Banjo-Tooie: 9/10 at Nintendo Life.
- Metacritic's tracker: the figures it shows for the Essential list are 92 for Banjo-Kazooie and 73 for Banjo-Tooie. I'm treating those as the tracker's displayed figures and haven't checked how they were calculated.
Banjo-Tooie is still well regarded. But "universally perfect" overstates it, and the Metacritic figure shows the sequel is received less warmly than the original.
The same day brings departures
Xbox's post also lists 13 games leaving the library on November 15. They include GoldenEye 007, Wreckfest, Moonlighter and Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2. Xbox suggests buying them at a discount before they go. Another Rare title, Perfect Dark, joins Essential while GoldenEye leaves. Xbox's post doesn't say whether the two are linked.
What Essential subscribers should do
- Confirm you're on Essential or a higher tier before November 15.
- Expect the games to appear in the library on or after that date. Xbox gives no launch time.
- Choose console or cloud. Neither Banjo game is listed for PC.
- If you want the leaving titles, such as GoldenEye 007, finish them or buy them before November 15.
The takeaway
For Essential members, this is a solid expansion of the catalog. It covers a third of the Banjo series and several well-known Rare and Microsoft-era titles. The same games were already on higher tiers, so Ultimate and Premium subscribers get nothing new. Anyone reading "free" as "no subscription" will be disappointed.
