What Better xCloud is
Better xCloud is a browser userscript. A userscript is a small add-on that changes how a website behaves. This one changes the Xbox Cloud Gaming website at xbox.com/play. The project's repository describes it as a userscript to improve Xbox Cloud Gaming (xCloud) and Remote Play experiences on web browsers. The developer's site adds that despite its name, Better xCloud supports using Remote Play on the xbox.com/play website at 1080p. It also says you can even stream Xbox 360 games.
BGR's report, syndicated by AOL, pitches the tool as a fix for the limits of running Xbox Cloud Gaming in Microsoft Edge on a Steam Deck. The Deck can't use the Xbox app directly, and the Heroic Launcher that works well for Epic games doesn't help much for Xbox titles. The browser route is the practical option.
Remote Play and cloud gaming are not the same
The headline says "play Xbox games remotely", which can mislead. Xbox has two streaming modes, and Microsoft's developer documentation explains the difference:
- Xbox cloud gaming: the game runs on an Xbox server in an Azure datacenter, and you connect to the nearest one. Only titles published to cloud streaming are available.
- Xbox Remote Play: the game runs on your own console. Microsoft says the user connects directly to their home Xbox console, and that you can play games installed locally on that console.
Better xCloud works with both modes. For Remote Play, you still need an Xbox console at home that is set up and reachable. The Deck is only the screen and controller. If you don't own a console, Remote Play isn't an option. Cloud streaming then depends on your Xbox subscription and on which games Xbox has published for streaming.
BGR says you can stream from another network. That fits how Remote Play connects to a home console. But I found no source that guarantees it will work on every setup. Results depend on your console, your home upload speed and your connection to the Deck. I found no minimum upload figure, so I won't quote one.
Where it runs
The developer's site lists install routes by platform:
- Windows, macOS, Linux and SteamOS (Steam Deck): install on Chrome or Edge.
- Android, Android TV and Meta Quest headsets: an Android app (in beta) or the Edge browser.
- macOS, iOS and iPadOS: Safari.
- LG TVs: webOS 22 or newer.
These are different install routes. One package does not cover all of them.
Features
Features the project lists, which BGR also mentions:
- High visual quality: 1080p and a high-quality codec profile on all devices, if supported.
- Clarity Boost: several methods to make the stream look clearer and sharper. A fork of the project describes its version as similar to, but not as good as, the Clarity Boost of xCloud on Edge. Treat this as a tuning option rather than a quality upgrade.
- Input options: mouse and keyboard, touch controls and custom touch layouts.
- Screenshots: a single click captures a screenshot of the stream. A fork's README calls this useful on devices with built-in controllers, such as the Steam Deck.
- Local co-op in some games.
BGR says the tool "reduces lag". I couldn't verify that. The project documents quality, resolution and server-selection settings, not a guaranteed latency cut. The BGR article also ties bitrate, renderer and clarity options to Game Pass. I couldn't confirm that any of them are subscriber-only features of the script. Better xCloud itself is free. Xbox's own requirements for games and streaming apply separately.
Installing on Steam Deck
The Deck-specific steps are not documented in the sources I found. The project's general Chrome/Edge/Chromium guide has these steps:
- Install a Chromium-based browser on the Deck. The project recommends Chrome or Edge.
- Install the Tampermonkey extension. The guide warns that you may need to enable Developer Mode in your browser, or Tampermonkey may not work.
- Install the Better xCloud script from the project's official GitHub distribution.
- Open xbox.com/play and sign in.
- Click the new server-name button next to your profile picture to open the settings.
I haven't tested this on a Deck. Expect to adjust it for Gaming Mode versus Desktop Mode and for controller mappings.
Trust, safety and maintenance
- Unofficial: the project says it is not affiliated with Xbox in any way and tells users to use it at their own risk.
- Official sources only: the README warns that it is only provided on the official repos. It names betterxcloud.net as a fake website. Don't install the script from anywhere else.
- Privacy: the developer says the script never sends your Xbox account or token to another website. The site also says it is ads-free and tracking-free, apart from trackers on the Xbox site itself. These are the developer's claims, not an independent audit. Review the permissions any extension asks for.
- Account bans: the developer's site says Xbox's cloud team has said it doesn't ban people for using third-party clients or extensions. This is the developer's account of Xbox's position, not a Microsoft policy statement.
- Maintenance: the latest release I could see was 6.7.12, dated 14 July. It fixed a missing Remote Play button for some users. The developer says they are busy with another project and have no time for new features. The repository showed activity as recently as 4 October 2026. Expect bug fixes rather than new features. A change to the Xbox site could break the script until someone fixes it.
Practical takeaways
- Remote Play streams from your own console. Cloud gaming streams from Xbox servers.
- Use a Chromium-based browser and install only from the official GitHub project.
- Treat resolution, bitrate and clarity settings as things to tune. They won't deliver the same result on every network.
- Plain Edge on the Deck works with no extra install and no third-party code. Better xCloud is for users who want the extra control and accept an unofficial script.
