Cardiff and Vale College (CAVC) says it has kept its Microsoft Elevate Showcase School status for the eighth year in a row. The renewal is a modest piece of news. The more useful part is the list of Microsoft tools the college says it now uses for teaching and support. This piece covers both, and it separates what the college has claimed from what has been independently shown.

A teacher presents digital learning tools to a diverse group of students in a bright classroom overlooking Cardiff Castle. What was announced

CAVC says it was crowned the first Microsoft Elevate Showcase School in Wales in 2018. The programme used to be called Microsoft Showcase School, and the college says the recognition reflects its commitment to digital innovation, inclusion and digitally enabled learning.

The college's own news item is dated 30 September 2026, according to the FE News repost. Business News Wales ran the story on 26 October 2026.

The renaming matters if you follow Microsoft's education branding. In December 2018 the college was described as the first further education institution in Wales named a Showcase College by Microsoft. The programme has been renamed and restructured since then.

What CAVC says it is doing with Microsoft tools

The college describes several uses across departments. These are all CAVC's own claims. No independent evaluation was supplied.

  • Wellbeing team: Staff use Microsoft Copilot Chat for tasks "from digitising physical materials to analysing data." The report doesn't say what data is involved, how outputs are checked, or what safeguards apply.
  • ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages): Staff use what the college calls "Copilot Teach" to generate vocabulary flash cards for learners. Microsoft's own January 2026 announcement describes The team uses Clipchamp to generate Welsh video captions.
  • Families Learning: The team uses PowerPoint Live and user-generated Welsh captions, which the college says saves time and money. No amounts or baseline are given.
  • Entry level 2 classes: The college says that following training last year, these classes use Reading Progress weekly. It adds that feedback shows these learners progress better through the year.

The wording groups some of these tools under "AI". Reading Progress is a Teams fluency-practice tool. Microsoft's documentation describes it as letting learners record reading passages while teachers review measures such as accuracy and words per minute. Whether it counts as AI is a matter of how the college chose to describe it.

How strong is the evidence?

Not very strong, and that is normal for this kind of announcement.

  • The "better progression" claim has no figures, comparison group, or method behind it. It shouldn't be read as proof that Reading Progress caused the improvement.
  • The "saving time and money" claim for captioning has no numbers.
  • The report doesn't say which Microsoft licences are in use. It also doesn't cover data-protection controls, student consent, or accessibility testing. Anyone running a similar rollout should find those answers for themselves.
  • Welsh-language captioning quality is the sort of thing that needs human review. The report doesn't say whether staff review the captions.

The principal's statement that all learners leave "as confident users of Microsoft technology" is also an assertion. It is nearly identical to wording the college used in 2020, when a college statement said students leave as confident users of Microsoft technology, which gives them a skillset employers value. That consistency suggests a long-standing position more than a newly measured outcome.

What the status means

The status is recognition and community membership. It is not a technical certification, an accreditation, or an endorsement of every product the college uses.

Microsoft's 2026–27 application guidance gives some sense of the bar for schools applying. It asks schools to:

  1. Join the community, starting as a Pathfinder school.
  2. Check themselves against the AI Transformation Rubric, with a minimum of Level 2 in Policy and Governance and Level 1 in at least two other areas.
  3. Complete a Showcase Evidence Template and submit AI-transformation evidence.

The application window for 2026–27 ran to 31 July 2026. Those are published requirements for the programme. CAVC's actual application and Microsoft's assessment of it are not public, so we can't say how the college met them.

Microsoft's January 2026 announcement also explains the new branding. Microsoft launched Elevate for Educators then, with school and educator communities, credentials, and AI features in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app. For the Showcase programme, this puts AI use at the centre of what gets recognised.

Why IT admins and Microsoft 365 shops should care

This is a college news item, but it is a small window into how Microsoft 365 Education tools are being used in practice.

  • Education customers are using Copilot-branded tools for everyday tasks such as flash cards and captions, and not only for large projects.
  • Welsh-language support is a practical test of whether these tools work in smaller languages.
  • Wellbeing data analysis through Copilot Chat is the sort of use that IT and data-protection teams should look at closely. This is a general point from industry practice. It is not something the report says CAVC got wrong.

Bottom line

CAVC's renewal shows a long-running Microsoft partnership. The examples are real uses of Teams, Clipchamp, PowerPoint and Copilot. The outcomes are self-reported. If you work in education IT, take the tool list as a set of ideas. Don't treat the progression and savings claims as established results until the college publishes the data.
