What OpenAI has said
OpenAI's status page lists the incident as "Elevated errors in ChatGPT conversations" with a "Degraded performance" label. The company says it is investigating elevated error rates affecting some conversations, that error rates are improving, and that its team is still assessing recovery. The affected components are Conversations and FedRAMP. OpenAI says it will share further updates as they become available.
The status page timestamp puts the incident at 4:58 PM. A third-party monitor, Pingoru, records the same start as 4:58 PM UTC. That is corroboration from a monitoring service, not an OpenAI statement.
What we don't know
OpenAI has not published the following for this incident:
- A root cause.
- An error percentage.
- A geographic breakdown.
- A list of affected subscription plans.
- Which FedRAMP workloads or features are affected. The FedRAMP listing is only a component tag, so it would be a stretch to call this a wider government-cloud outage.
"Improving" is also not "resolved." At the time of the status-page capture, the incident was still marked as investigating. Recovery may be complete by the time you read this, so check the live page.
OpenAI's own footer explains why your experience may differ from a neighbor's. Availability metrics are reported in aggregate across all tiers, models and error types, and individual availability can vary by subscription tier and by the specific model and API features in use.
Is this part of a pattern?
Windows Report notes that a similar conversation issue hit Pro and Plus users late last month, and that login and sign-ups were affected at the start of October. OpenAI's status history backs up the separate incidents:
- September 30: OpenAI listed elevated error rates for ChatGPT Pro and Plus users. The history later marks it as fully recovered.
- October 1: The history lists "Issues with login, signup, and ads" as fully recovered. It also lists a separate incident, "Elevated errors in ChatGPT conversations for Free and Go plans," which was likewise fully recovered.
Those are distinct incidents with no stated common cause. The status history is crowded. It shows incident entries on most days across July through early October, spanning ChatGPT, Codex, the API and more. It would be a mistake to read the October 5 entry as proof of a worsening trend or to link it to the earlier ones. A busy incident log is also what you'd expect from a large, fast-changing service that reports problems openly. Whether the volume of incidents is acceptable depends on how much your workflows depend on the service.
What to do if you're affected
Nothing here is a confirmed fix, because this is a server-side incident. Some sensible steps follow from the status information:
- Check OpenAI's status page for the current state of the incident before troubleshooting your own setup.
- If the page shows the incident as ongoing, expect failed or interrupted responses and give it time. Retrying may or may not work. OpenAI has not described the symptoms in this incident.
- If the status page shows recovery and you still have problems, look at your own account, client, network or device. That would be a separate issue.
- For business use, have a fallback plan for time-sensitive work. This applies to any cloud AI service.
Why IT admins should care
Many Windows and Microsoft 365 shops now have people using ChatGPT, whether in the browser or the desktop app, for drafting, analysis and coding help. An elevated-error incident rarely produces a help-desk ticket storm on its own. It does produce a steady trickle of "it's broken for me" messages. The status page's component view is the quickest triage tool. It tells you whether to troubleshoot locally or tell users to wait.
Treat this as a developing story. Check OpenAI's status page for the latest state. The facts above reflect what the page showed at capture time.
