Tracked under Microsoft 365 roadmap ID 576807 and detailed in Microsoft 365 Message Center notice MC1489590, the feature is currently rolling out for the Web platform in Worldwide (Standard Multi-Tenant) cloud instances. While Microsoft’s release plan and Message Center notices targeted September 2026 (specifically September 30, 2026, in the Message Center archive) for general availability, the October 16, 2026 roadmap update lists its status as "Rolling out". As with any cloud rollout, administrators should check their own tenant environments rather than assuming immediate universal availability.
Breaking Free from the Project-Level Calendar
Historically, relying solely on a project-level calendar meant every task inside a project inherited the exact same working-hour schedule, even when specific deliverables had wildly different timing requirements. In Microsoft's release plan documentation, the company notes that this rigid uniformity often forces project managers into manual workarounds and produces inaccurate timelines.
Task-level calendars allow planners to assign a unique calendar to each individual task, governing the specific working hours and timeline calculations for that item. According to Microsoft’s release plan, this capability comprises three core elements:
- Setting a task-level calendar directly within the Customizable task details pane.
- Managing task-level calendars across a project.
- Schedule API support, allowing programmatic interaction beyond the user interface.
Microsoft also notes that task-level calendars are designed to work alongside a companion capability: task-level schedule mode. When used together, planners can dictate whether the scheduling engine automatically adjusts effort, duration, or units while still enforcing custom working hours for each individual task. (Note that Microsoft’s public release notes do not detail the underlying scheduling precedence rules if a task calendar conflicts with other resource constraints, nor do they specify the exact Schedule API endpoint schemas.)
Architectural Context: The Customizable Task Details Pane
You won't find the new task-level calendar selector in the default out-of-the-box task view unless you flip a specific configuration switch first.
According to Microsoft Learn documentation for Dynamics 365 Project Operations—which applies to both Project Operations Integrated with ERP and Project Operations Core—the platform defaults to an embedded Microsoft Project for the web experience to display task details. While capable, that native embedded pane cannot be customized.
To solve this, Microsoft introduced the Customizable task details pane, an organization-level setting that swaps the default view for a Microsoft Dataverse-backed, model-driven side pane. Task-level calendar assignment lives inside this customizable pane.
| Feature Aspect | Default Task Details Pane | Customizable Task Details Pane |
|---|---|---|
| Underlying Architecture | Embedded Microsoft Project for the web | Microsoft Dataverse-backed, model-driven side pane |
| Customizability | Fixed; cannot add custom task fields | Customizable by administrators and makers |
| Task-Level Calendar UI | Not supported in the announcement | Supported when enabled via Feature control |
| Fallback Access | Default view when clicking the task "(i)" icon | Native pane remains accessible via the Overflow button |
When a user edits fields in the customizable side pane, the changes are processed and saved through the Project Scheduling Service (PSS), synchronized automatically back to Dataverse, and used to recalculate derived fields in the user interface. Microsoft Learn confirms that the pane respects existing Dataverse and task-grid security permissions, meaning users can only modify fields they already have authorization to edit.
How to Enable the Prerequisite Task Pane
Because this feature is categorized as "Enabled for end users by admins, makers, or marketers," it requires configuration before project managers can start assigning task calendars. While Message Center notice MC1489590 states that no mandatory administrative action is required for the rollout itself, enabling the customizable pane is a prerequisite to using the new UI experience.
Based on Microsoft Learn’s documentation and the feature release plan, administrators can enable the pane by following these steps:
- Open your Dynamics 365 Project Operations environment.
- Navigate to Settings > Parameters > Feature control on the ribbon.
- In the drop-down list, locate and select Enable Customize Task Pane (note that some Microsoft Learn documentation displays a typographical trailing word, showing "Enable Customize Task Pane dates" in the step description).
- Once enabled, open a project, navigate to the Task grid, and select the information (i) icon next to a task to launch the Dataverse-hosted side pane where task-level calendar settings are surfaced.
Summary: By moving calendar assignments from the macro project level down to individual tasks via the Dataverse-backed Customizable task details pane and Schedule API, Dynamics 365 Project Operations gives enterprise planners a practical way to model irregular shift work, maintenance windows, and varied team schedules without constant manual date overrides.
