Game Pass: which tiers get it
Xbox Wire's November 3 schedule, written by Megan Spurr, gives the Game Pass details. It lists the game for Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, handheld and PC on November 5, under Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Xbox's note says the "Handheld" label marks games optimized for handheld play.
Premium and Essential subscribers are not covered. Game Pass Premium and Game Pass Essential are not listed for this game. Several other titles in the same schedule, such as Firefighting Simulator: Ignite and Pit of Goblin, do list Premium.
What the sequel changes
Xbox describes the game as the first open world escape room game, with online and local two-player co-op. The PlayStation Blog gives the developer's view. Art director Michelle Huttunen says the sequel expands the first game's more linear structure into an open campus. She says puzzles are no longer limited to rooms. The post also says couch and online co-op work across the full campus, the story and all the puzzles.
The campus is split into several sections:
- Headmaster's Tower: One of the first spaces the team built when updating the visuals. It was meant to establish a more academic feel and the school's history.
- Humanities Campus: It has changed the most from the first game's 2D map layout. Early versions felt too open, so the team added interactable landmarks, side quests and escapes.
- Visual clues: You can't enter Humanities right away. A keyhole-shaped fountain gives you glimpses of it from elsewhere on campus. Keyhole decorations are hidden around the school.
- Other areas: The Steam community posts describe a Science Campus, an Arts Campus and Campus Gardens. They say the game has five major locations.
All of this is the developer's own description. Nobody has independently tested how well the open-world idea works.
Extra details from TheXboxHub
TheXboxHub's launch report adds several features. It credits them to the game's promotional material, and I have not verified them separately:
- An optional No-Timer Mode, so you can solve puzzles without a countdown.
- A mystery about the school's founding, with new teachers alongside familiar characters.
- Puzzle side quests and redesigned environments.
- New outfits.
- A soundtrack from returning composer DJ Doseone.
Editions and pricing
TheXboxHub reports Xbox Store prices of £16.74 for the Standard Edition and £24.99 for the Deluxe Edition. Those are UK prices from that outlet, so US prices will differ. The Deluxe Edition bundles:
- the base game
- the Season Pass
- the Mask-uerade cosmetic DLC pack
- the official soundtrack
- a digital artbook
The Steam announcement says the Season Pass includes two upcoming major expansions. Each one adds a new story set in the Escape Academy universe, new escape rooms and extra-credit side quests. A 90s Kid stresses that the pass covers future content, not two expansions you can play now. Game Pass members who want the expansions will presumably need to buy the pass separately. The sources I reviewed don't say how Game Pass interacts with the DLC, so check the store listing.
What the sources don't establish
Several outlets mention Xbox One and Xbox Play Anywhere, but the current Xbox Game Pass schedule doesn't list Xbox One for this launch. Check the Xbox Store listing for your device before you buy.
The sources I reviewed also don't cover performance, accessibility options, cross-platform play or save transfer. They don't confirm how the puzzles actually play either. TheXboxHub says its review is still to come.
A 90s Kid reports that the Steam build includes optimizations based on demo and pre-release feedback. The developers say they will keep monitoring issues and player feedback after launch.
Who should care
- Ultimate and PC Game Pass members: It costs nothing extra to try, and it works as a co-op game for two.
- Premium and Essential subscribers: You'll need to buy it.
- PC players: It's on Steam, and TheXboxHub also lists Epic and the Xbox PC app.
- Fans of the original: Treat the "open world" label as a developer claim until reviews arrive. The test is whether wandering the campus is as satisfying as the timed rooms.
