Fable arrives on February 23, 2027, and the early-access, Game Pass and PC details are now firm enough to plan around. There are still a few gaps, and some of what's circulating online goes beyond what the official sources say. This guide covers what is confirmed and what isn't.

Release date and early access

Valve's Steam listing shows a release date of February 23, 2027, with Advance Access starting February 18, 2027. That matches Playground Games' official FAQ. Playground Games is developing the game and Xbox Game Studios is publishing it.

The rules for early access:

  • Premium Edition and Collector's Edition buyers get up to five days of early access, starting February 18.
  • The Standard Edition and Game Pass launch access start February 23.
  • No universal unlock hour has been published. Check the countdown on your own store account instead of assuming midnight local time.

Platforms: Xbox, Windows, Steam and PS5

The official FAQ lists Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass, Steam and PlayStation 5 as launch platforms. Xbox's own listing shows Xbox Series X|S, PC, handheld and cloud, with the line "Fable is included with Game Pass to play on PC." Xbox Wire adds that players can run it on console and PC at no additional cost with Xbox Play Anywhere. I could only confirm that wording on Xbox Wire's August gamescom post, which describes the Xbox versions.

For PC players there are two routes:

  • Xbox app / Microsoft account purchase: Play Anywhere applies, so one purchase covers both Xbox Series X|S and Windows.
  • Steam purchase: this is a separate storefront. Nothing in the official material says Steam or PS5 purchases take part in Play Anywhere. The same goes for PS5 purchases, so don't assume your purchase carries across.

No Xbox One or PS4 version has been announced.

Game Pass: what's confirmed and what isn't

The FAQ says Fable will be playable on day one through Game Pass Ultimate. Xbox's own listing also says it is included with Game Pass on PC. The FAQ states that Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass members can buy the Premium Upgrade.

Third-party sites disagree about lower tiers. One says Core and Console subscribers also get the base game. Another says the PC-only tier hasn't been specified. Neither claim comes from the FAQ. If you're on a lower tier, check the Xbox product page for your own plan before launch.

Practically, subscribers who want the five-day head start must pay for the upgrade. Subscription access to the base game still depends on keeping the subscription active.

Editions and pricing

EditionUS price on SteamNotes
Standard$69.99Base game
Premium$99.99Early access, premium content pack, digital artbook and soundtrack, Order of the Hero expansion
Collector'sSold outNo restock currently planned

Prices vary by store and region. Xbox's Canadian listing, for example, shows $89.99 for Standard and $129.99 for Premium. I could not confirm the $39.99 Premium Upgrade price against an official store page. It comes from third-party coverage, so check the Xbox Store before buying.

Upgrade rules from the FAQ:

  • Xbox Series X|S Standard owners can buy the Premium Upgrade now.
  • PS5 and Steam Standard owners can upgrade only after February 23, 2027.
  • There is no physical Premium Edition. If you want a disc, buy the physical Standard Edition and add the digital upgrade on a supported platform.
  • The Collector's Edition is sold out because of demand. Playground says it will ship in time for the February 18 early access, though that is an intention rather than a delivery guarantee.

Every pre-order includes a content pack with a Chicken Suit and three gifts: a Wild Flower Bouquet, a Toy Chicken and a Scones & Jam Picnic Hamper. The Premium Edition includes the post-launch expansion Fable: Order of the Hero. It is a story-driven expansion set in a dangerous new region dominated by an ancient cult in the FAQ's description. No release date or standalone price has been announced.

PC requirements

Playground's FAQ publishes these specs:

MinimumRecommended
CPUIntel i7-6850K or AMD Ryzen 5 2600Intel i5-11600KF or AMD Ryzen 5 5600
GPUGeForce RTX 5050 or RTX 2060, Radeon RX 6600, Intel A580GeForce RTX 5060 or 3060 Ti, Radeon RX 9060 XT or RX 6700 XT
RAM12 GB16 GB
VRAM6 GB8 GB
StorageSSD requiredSSD required
OSWindows 10 22H2Windows 10 22H2

Two details the FAQ adds are worth noting. It recommends XMP and Resizable BAR for both tiers. It also says the PC version offers high uncapped framerates, 4K and HDR10, with optional NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR 3+4 and Intel XeSS 2.1 on supported hardware. Those features need compatible hardware and a compatible display.

One figure to treat carefully: the 135 GB storage number appears in the Game News Plus guide but not in the FAQ text I reviewed, which says only that an SSD is required. Plan for a large install, but wait for the store listing before clearing exactly that much space. The same goes for preloading. The Game News Plus guide says Game Pass pre-install is available, but I could not confirm that in an official source. Final download size and preload timing for purchased copies haven't been announced.

Gameplay scope

The FAQ calls Fable a new beginning rather than a continuation of the Lionhead trilogy. It is a single-player open-world action RPG set in Albion. The FAQ states there will be no multiplayer. Playground says that:

  • The main story runs about 15–20 hours, with another 15–20 hours of side content.
  • The world has more than 1,000 handcrafted NPCs.
  • Players can buy homes, become landlords and manage businesses.
  • Demon Doors return.
  • Players get a 30 fps or 60 fps option, with more detail promised nearer launch.

These are developer claims, not measured results.

The FAQ lists full audio and text localisation for English, Brazilian Portuguese, German and Latin American Spanish. Text-only localisation covers French, Italian, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Spanish and Polish.

What to do before launch

  1. Pick one storefront on purpose. Choose the Xbox app and Microsoft account if you want Play Anywhere between console and PC. Choose Steam if you prefer that ecosystem, knowing it sits outside Play Anywhere.
  2. Decide on early access. If you're a Game Pass member, weigh the upgrade cost against the five-day head start and the expansion.
  3. Check your hardware. Confirm an SSD, enough VRAM and Windows 10 22H2 or later. Enable XMP and Resizable BAR in your BIOS if your board supports them.
  4. Leave headroom on the drive. Don't rely on one unverified size figure.
  5. Revisit the FAQ before February. Playground says it will keep updating the page.

This reflects what's published as of October 5, 2026. Prices, subscription tiers, preload details and performance information could still change before release.
