Where it's available
Square Enix's own announcement lists Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store on Windows. The Xbox Store listing names Square Enix as publisher and shows the Xbox Series X|S and PC versions.
The PC release date is where sources disagree. Square Enix's Asia news portal lists October 22 as the release date and adds a note that Steam is October 23. The US Steam page shows October 22. Egamersworld says Square Enix's Japanese materials mention October 23 for Steam, but that date is in Japan Standard Time. GadgetMatch, by contrast, reports a PC start of October 23.
Other outlets point to a Steam unlock at 16:00 UTC on October 22 (12:00 PM ET, 9:00 AM PT, going by SteamDB and AllThingsHow). I couldn't confirm a Steam unlock hour from Steam itself. The Steam listing I inspected still showed pre-purchase wording and said the game would unlock in about an hour. Check the countdown on your own storefront rather than assuming one worldwide hour. I also couldn't confirm that every regional Xbox or Steam page had switched from pre-order to buy and download by the time of writing.
The free demo and save carryover
The most practical thing for PC and Xbox players is the free demo. It is not a launch-day offer. The Xbox Store lists it as released on September 3, 2026.
- Scope: Steam says some level restrictions apply but the entire first chapter can be explored as it appears in the full version. Netto's Game Room reports the same, and describes the demo as covering all of Chapter 1.
- Saves: Steam says demo save data carries over to the full game. One FAQ, from Game News Plus, says demo saves carry into the corresponding full-game version on each platform.
- Limits: The listings I inspected do not explain how saves move between platforms. Don't assume demo progress carries from, say, Steam to the Xbox version. Nintendo is reported to block save transfer between its Switch and Switch 2 versions.
If you're undecided, playing Chapter 1 first costs nothing. It also lets you check how the game runs on your own hardware before you pay.
Xbox and Microsoft Store details
The Xbox Store listing marks the game as Xbox Play Anywhere and Optimized for Xbox Series X|S. Its capability labels include:
- 4K Ultra HD
- 60 fps+
- Single player
- Xbox achievements
- Xbox cloud saves
- Console keyboard and mouse support
It also says the game can be played in the cloud with Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate, but the game must be bought separately.
Treat those capability labels as the publisher's claims. I found no independent benchmarks, so they don't show that every scene holds 4K or 60 fps. The listings don't explain how ownership or saves sync under Play Anywhere either, so confirm that in the store before relying on it.
PC requirements and Steam details
The Steam page lists Windows 11 for both minimum and recommended specs. A 64-bit processor and operating system are required. Square Enix lists these targets:
| Spec | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 11 | Windows 11 |
| CPU | Ryzen 3 2300X / Core i3-8100 | Ryzen 5 2500X / Core i3-8100 |
| RAM | 8 GB | 8 GB |
| GPU | Radeon RX 6400 / Arc A580 / GTX 1650 | Radeon RX 5500 XT / Arc A580 / GTX 1650 |
| DirectX | 12 | 12 |
| Storage | 15 GB | 15 GB |
| Target | 1080p at 30 FPS, Low preset | 1080p at 60 FPS, Highest preset |
Windows 10 machines are not listed as supported on the Steam page. Anyone still on Windows 10 should check that before buying. The hardware bar is low, and a GTX 1650 meets the GPU line in both tiers.
Other Steam listing details:
- Cloud and sharing: Steam Cloud and Family Sharing are listed.
- Steam Deck: The game is listed as Steam Deck Verified, according to the storefront summary.
- DRM and licensing: The page notes Denuvo anti-tamper DRM and a separate third-party EULA.
- Languages: Eight languages are supported.
Editions and prices
On the US storefronts I inspected, the standard edition is $49.99 and the Digital Deluxe Edition is $59.99. The Xbox page also lists a $14.99 Deluxe upgrade add-on. Prices can vary by region and may change.
- Digital Deluxe: It bundles the Magitek & Grimoire Deluxe Pack, which includes a chocobo magitek appearance item, a Fel Meteor Limit Burst unlock for a certain character, and starter consumables.
- Pre-order bonus: Steam lists a Magitek Airship & Squire Starter Pack, available only to customers who pre-ordered.
- Early purchase bonus: Steam lists a Squire Kickstart Pack for purchases made by November 6, 2026, at 8:59 a.m. PT. G2A reports that Microsoft's store lists a slightly different cutoff of November 5, so check your own store.
- Duplicate buys: Steam warns that the Deluxe pack is also sold separately, so avoid buying it twice.
What the game is
Square Enix pitches the game as a full-fledged console-quality RPG rebuilt from the first story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, not a straight port. The hero is Rain, a young knight of Grandshelt, who travels with his childhood friend Lasswell. Combat is turn-based and built around breaking enemy defenses to gain extra turns, with Visions fighting alongside the party. Optional content includes a Colosseum, the Chamber of Arms and an Ultima Weapon fight. All of this comes from the publisher's description, not from independent review. Netto's Game Room says it has a full review, which I haven't assessed here.
Practical takeaways
- Try the free demo first on whichever platform you plan to buy on. Its saves are said to carry into the full game on that platform.
- Windows 10 users should check the Windows 11 requirement before buying.
- If you play on both Xbox and PC, the Xbox listing's Play Anywhere label is the feature to confirm before purchase.
- Don't count on a single global unlock time. Watch your own store's countdown.
- Check your region's edition prices and bonus cutoff dates before buying.
Correction (October 22, 2026): The hero's companion is spelled "Lasswell," not "Laswell" as originally written.
Update: Xbox confirms availability and single-purchase console/PC access (October 22, 2026)
Microsoft’s Xbox Wire now confirms that Final Fantasy Resonance is available on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. Its October 22 launch post also explicitly states that Xbox Play Anywhere lets buyers play on both platforms at no additional cost. This resolves the earlier uncertainty over whether the storefront’s Play Anywhere label meant a separate purchase would be needed for Windows and console. That confirmation concerns the Xbox ecosystem, not Steam ownership.
The product listings embedded in Xbox Wire also clarify the Microsoft-store early-purchase deadline: the Squire Kickstart Pack is available with purchases made by November 5, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. local time. This replaces the earlier secondhand description of that store’s cutoff with first-party listing text; it does not change the separately reported Steam deadline. The listing says eligible players can claim the items from the postbox outside the inn in the Town of Mitra after progressing far enough.
Xbox Wire’s announcement does not explain cross-platform demo-save transfers or establish Steam’s unlock time, so those earlier caveats remain.
