What Windows Report found
According to Windows Report, you right-click a browser tab and choose "Create AI Tab." Firefox opens a new tab and asks Smart Window to build a page from the source website. You can then open the result in the current tab or in another one.
The generated page doesn't use the original site's address. It lives on Firefox's internal about:smartpage URL. Windows Report's example was about:smartpage?page=windows_report_5. That page was titled "Key updates from Windows Report" and listed individual headlines with short descriptions of recent stories. The idea is that you can skim several updates from one site without opening each article.
The report contrasts this with a conventional AI summary in a sidebar. Here the output gets its own page, with its own layout and sections.
What we don't know
The reporting leaves several practical questions open:
- It doesn't say which Nightly build introduced the feature, or whether it's on by default.
- It doesn't say whether the page summarizes a whole site, a single article, or some other defined set of content. The one example was a site's recent headlines.
- It doesn't say which regions or operating systems can use it, or whether all websites work.
- Mozilla has not confirmed a stable release date. Treat this as an experiment that may change or disappear.
Smart Window background
Mozilla's own material helps explain where this sits. In a September 24, 2026 post, Mozilla describes Smart Window as an optional AI-powered browsing experience... To be precise, Mozilla's explainer says it is still rolling out in beta, to users in the U.S., Canada, and France. Mozilla says the built-in assistant can summarize pages, make recommendations, compare information and plan tasks using your open tabs.
Windows Report's earlier coverage shows a pattern of Nightly experiments around Smart Window. Firefox Nightly added a Monitors toolbar button that exposes Smart Window Tasks, for price-drop and restock alerts. It sits alongside Organize Tabs for automatic tab grouping. Create AI Tab looks like another piece of the same effort. These are separate features, and the reporting gives no sign that they share an implementation.
Privacy and accuracy
Nothing I found says how Create AI Tab handles page content. Mozilla's Smart Window Privacy Notice, last updated September 1, 2026, covers the assistant in general terms:
- Smart Window is opt-in and needs a Mozilla account.
- You can switch between Smart and classic windows.
- For assistant requests, the full prompt, including relevant browsing context, goes to a Mozilla server. Mozilla then forwards it to a third-party large language model, which sees a Mozilla IP address rather than yours.
- Mozilla says it does not train models on Smart Window interactions and never retains chat logs without your permission.
- Mozilla also says experimental Smart Window features may involve additional processing, with notice if the changes are material.
That is the assistant's documented data flow. It would be a stretch to apply it to this unconfirmed Nightly feature, so check Mozilla's documentation if you plan to try it on sensitive sites.
Mozilla's support material also warns that LLMs can produce false or misleading information. A Smart Page is a scanning aid. If a headline summary matters, open the source article before you rely on it.
My take
The idea is sensible. A sidebar answer disappears with the conversation, while a page with a URL can be reopened and kept next to your other tabs. The catch is that an AI-built page that looks like a site overview can feel more authoritative than a chat reply. It also puts an AI layer between readers and publishers, which is a tension Mozilla has to navigate. This is general industry analysis, not something from the reporting.
For Windows users, the takeaway is modest. If you run Firefox Nightly with Smart Window, look for the right-click option on a tab. Everyone else can wait. Nightly experiments often change or get dropped, and no stable date has been announced.
