The Coalition has added a reward to Gears of War: E-Day's hardest achievement. In a September 30 post on the official Gears of War site, the studio confirmed that players who unlock Dead Serious get an exclusive Medal, Player Title, Banner, Emblem, Icon, plus for the first time ever in the franchise, a Legendary Character skin. The studio says it will debut the Dead Serious reward skin at the start of Season 2.

The timing matters. TrueAchievements reported that the E-Day achievements go live for unlocking on October 1 for Premium Edition owners on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC. That's early access day. Everyone else gets the game on October 6. Wikipedia lists the game as scheduled to be released on October 6, 2026, for Windows and Xbox Series X/S.

What Dead Serious actually asks of you

Dead Serious is the latest version of Gears' old "Seriously" achievement, which has been testing the patience of completionists since the Xbox 360 days. The Coalition said so directly: "you may have noticed the traditional Seriously achievement is back for E-Day, which we've named Dead Serious."

The requirements come from the achievement list, not the September 30 blog post. XboxAchievements and TrueAchievements both list it as 100% Campaign on Insane, 25,000 kills in Versus, max Player Level, and max 4 classes. TrueAchievements' list puts it at 85 Gamerscore. Here's what each part involves:

  • 100% Campaign on Insane: TrueAchievements says this includes finishing the secondary objectives on Insane, on top of beating the story at the highest difficulty.
  • 25,000 Versus kills: This one is just a grind. Versus is 4v4, and according to The Coalition's multiplayer deep dive, everyone starts with the same loadout and there are no weapon mods. Every kill has to be earned.
  • Max Player Level: The deep dive says Player Level caps at 100, and players can Re-Up a total of four times, representing 500 total levels of player progression. TrueAchievements reads "max Player Level" as covering all of those Re-Ups, the same as the separate "Got Your Wings" achievement. If that's right, you're looking at 500 levels.
  • Max 4 classes: TrueAchievements says this lines up with maxing the four Horde Siege classes (Assault, Medic, Marksman and Breacher), which also unlocks "Siege Specialist." The Coalition's deep dive says each class has 30 levels at launch.

Calling it the "hardest" achievement in the game is TrueAchievements' judgment, not an official ranking. Still, it's hard to argue with. It needs campaign skill, a competitive grind and a very long Horde Siege commitment all at once. Even before the full requirements were public, one fan on X guessed Dead Serious would be "the most grindy ludicrous achievement ever."

Summary: Dead Serious combines Insane campaign completion, a big Versus kill count, full player progression and four maxed classes. It's a long-haul goal, not something you'll finish in launch week.

One of four Mastery achievements

The skin isn't the only one of its kind. In the summer multiplayer deep dive, The Coalition said E-Day features four Mastery achievements that each award a Legendary Character Skin, including an updated version of Gears' most notorious achievement; Seriously? (which we've called Dead Serious for E-Day). The September 30 post is new because it confirms what Dead Serious gives you and when the skin arrives.

We still don't know three things:

  • Which character the skin is for, or what it looks like
  • The exact start date of Season 2
  • Whether the skin will ever be available another way

On the last point, The Coalition's general rules are worth knowing. The deep dive says an item tied to an active challenge or achievement can't be skipped by paying or by spending Coins. Rewards from limited-time challenges move into the Barracks after a cooldown once they expire. Nothing has been said about whether that cooldown rule covers Dead Serious's skin, so don't plan on buying your way to it.

Season 1: Emergence and Season 2: Legacy

The same post laid out the season schedule:

ItemDate or detail
Season 1 startPremium Edition early access, October 1
General launchOctober 6
Versus Ranked opensOctober 13
Weekly Challenges refreshOctober 13 (early access gets the same set as launch day)
Season 1 endsDecember 1 (eight weeks)
20th anniversary giftNovember 7, for all E-Day players
Season 2"Legacy," start date not announced

Season 1 includes three limited events: Halloween, 20 Years of Gears and Thanksgibbing. Each lasts two weeks and comes with a Versus Event mode, a Horde Siege Event mission and its own rewards. The shop rotates every Tuesday. The Coalition also says items that were exclusive to limited-time partnerships will show up in the Barracks for Coins and Iron once the partnership deal ends.

Season 2 is called Legacy and will be dedicated to our 20th Anniversary featuring content themed around the greatest hits of Gears of War. The November 7 gift is a separate anniversary event, so don't read it as the Season 2 start date. The studio also said Gears of War: E-Day will have at least 5 post-launch seasons, and named Seasons 3 to 5 Infiltration, Pendulum and Devotion.

Rewards for Gears of War: Reloaded players

If you played Gears of War: Reloaded, some of its achievements carry over:

  • Prison Breakout unlocks the Fire and Fenix Pose. TrueAchievements says this means finishing the tutorial on any difficulty.
  • Re-Up unlocks the Old Guard Medal and the "Locked n' Reloaded" Title. TrueAchievements says this means reaching level 100 and re-upping.

The official post names the achievements and rewards but doesn't spell out what each achievement requires. Those descriptions come from TrueAchievements.

Changes for Xbox PC and Windows players

The same post had a couple of platform changes that are easy to miss:

  • The 0G "platinum" achievement is gone on Xbox. The Coalition removed "The Lucky Ones Died on E-Day" to support Xbox's upcoming Mythic Achievements feature. You still get the "I AM A GEAR" Player Title for earning every other achievement, and the achievement is still on Steam. If you're counting achievements, Dead Serious is now the top of the Xbox list.
  • Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) on Windows. On PC, ASD cuts down shader compile time. At launch it works on AMD hardware, with NVIDIA support due later in October. The Coalition says you may still benefit outside the Xbox PC app as long as the app is installed on your Windows 11 PC.
  • Known launch issues:
    • Playing through without reloading a checkpoint can cause memory problems. The fix is to reload a checkpoint if an encounter or objective gets stuck.
    • The game process may keep running after you close it. End it in Task Manager.
    • Offline play on PC isn't available until October 6.

Analysis: is a cosmetic carrot worth it?

Rewarding Dead Serious with something people can see is a smart move. Gamerscore lives on your profile. A Legendary skin shows up in every lobby. It also fits The Coalition's "respect the grind" approach to cosmetics, where achievement rewards can't be bought while the achievement is active.

The other side of it: giving rare cosmetics for extreme achievements can make the grind feel like homework, especially the 25,000 Versus kills for players who prefer PvE. And with no Season 2 date, nobody knows yet how long the skin will be a rare sight. That's a fair trade-off for a franchise that has always made "Seriously" painful on purpose.

Bottom line: If you're going for Dead Serious, plan an Insane campaign run with a reliable co-op squad, play Horde Siege across all four classes, and accept that Versus will be a big part of your life for a while. The reward is real and confirmed. What it looks like hasn't been revealed yet.
