Gears of War: E-Day is not on PS5, and Microsoft has said it never will be. As of October 7, 2026, you can play it on Xbox Series X|S and on PC, including Steam. For Windows readers the PC release is the part that matters. The PS5 backstory is messier than most headlines suggest.

What Xbox has confirmed

Microsoft has explicitly said that Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution are never coming to other consoles. Xbox marketing boss Aaron Greenberg said E-Day is not a timed exclusive, so PS5 players should not expect to ever play it on Sony's console. That is a stronger statement than the usual "exclusive for now."

Xbox's launch-day post on October 6 lists the platforms. It says the game is available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Game Pass and Steam. The post adds that you can play on both console and PC at no extra cost through Xbox Play Anywhere. PlayStation 5 isn't mentioned anywhere in the platform list.

The June 7 Xbox Wire announcement gave the same lineup. It listed Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud and Steam, and said the game would be available on day one with Game Pass Ultimate.

"Console exclusive" does not mean "Xbox-only"

"Xbox console exclusive" is narrower than it sounds. The game is exclusive among consoles. It is not exclusive to Xbox hardware. The Windows PC version and the Steam release are real and shipping.

Xbox's October 1 early-access post gives the delivery details:

  • Early access: It began October 1 at 8:00 a.m. PT / 15:00 UTC for Premium Edition players and for Game Pass subscribers with the Premium Upgrade.
  • Worldwide launch: It followed on October 6 at the same time.
  • Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Steam, with cloud gaming through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW.
  • Disc to Digital: The game is part of this program.

PC and console fine print

Xbox's store copy carries several conditions that PC players and Game Pass subscribers should know about:

  • Online multiplayer: Online campaign co-op, Horde Siege, Versus and other multiplayer features require a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer. It is sold separately.
  • Split-screen: Two-player split-screen is console only. A PC couch-co-op setup won't get it.
  • Performance target: The listing advertises 4K and up to 60 FPS across campaign and multiplayer. Both require a compatible display.
  • Account and download: A Microsoft Account is required, and the game needs an initial download plus future updates.
  • Price: The store listing shows $69.99.

Xbox's June post also says the game is built from scratch in Unreal Engine 5. It names MegaLights, a UE5 lighting system, as one of the technologies E-Day is among the first games to ship with.

The PS5 backstory: what is documented and what is contested

The question "was a PS5 version planned?" has a messier answer, and the evidence is split.

  • Never formally announced: GameSpot notes that E-Day was never announced for PS5. Many people expected it anyway, because Gears of War: Reloaded came to PS5 in 2025.
  • Report of a cancellation: Journalist Jeff Grubb said on the eve of the June showcase that E-Day was going to be on PS5 but no longer was. He later said there is a "basically finished version of Gears for PlayStation sitting on a drive." That second claim is his and is unverified.
  • Circumstantial evidence: A PEGI rating for E-Day on PS5 went live before the showcase and was later updated to list only Xbox Series X/S and PC. IGN reported a Walmart listing for a PS5 version. Retailer listings can be unreliable. The Verge's Tom Warren also pointed to a recent Xbox Podcast that still showed the PS5 logo in E-Day art. The video was then pulled.
  • Xbox's response: Greenberg called the claim of a last-minute cancellation "not true." He said the aim was to share the news first with players and showcase viewers. He also said he became aware of it "roughly a month in advance." Gears of War: E-Day developer The Coalition's studio heads told Eurogamer they never publicly discussed a PS5 release.
  • What Xbox didn't say: GameSpot observes that Microsoft did not deny that a PS5 version existed. Xbox denied only that the decision was last-minute.

The Radio Times piece states flatly that E-Day "was supposed to" come to PS5 and that a PlayStation logo appeared in a trailer. The trailer appearance has independent support, at least in the Xbox Podcast footage. Whether a PS5 version was officially planned is better described as reported, circumstantially supported and never confirmed by Microsoft. The most careful reading is that no PS5 version was ever formally announced, that the evidence suggests one may have been in the works, and that Microsoft now says it will not happen.

Should you trust "never"?

There is a reason for skepticism. Greenberg said in 2021 that Starfield was not a timed exclusive, and it later came to PS5. Industry-watchers have also noted that Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has talked about "resetting" the business in part through exclusive content. A Sharma-era strategy tied to business health could change again. That is analysis, not a promise either way.

Policy is also inconsistent across the lineup. Microsoft is taking a case-by-case approach: Halo: Campaign Evolved and the Fable reboot are still coming to PS5. The Radio Times speculation that the next console, "Project Nexus," may cost over $1,000, and that this explains the exclusivity, is unsupported by any official source I could verify. Treat it as rumor.

Bottom line for PC and Xbox players

  • Where to play today: Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC through the Xbox app, or Steam. Cloud play is available through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW.
  • Cross-buy: Xbox Play Anywhere covers console and PC at no extra cost.
  • PS5: There is no announced version, and Microsoft says it is not a timed exclusive.
  • Rumors to treat with caution: Reports of a finished PS5 build and Project Nexus pricing are unconfirmed.

If a PS5 edition ever appears, Microsoft will have to reverse a public statement. For now, a Windows PC remains the only non-Xbox way to play.
