A PlayStation and gaming PC overlook a neon-lit city at sunset, linked by glowing digital networks.
A former Rockstar North technical director thinks AI-made clones could push Rockstar to shrink the gap between GTA 6's console and PC launches. It's an informed guess, not an announcement. Rockstar hasn't announced a PC version or a PC date.

The comments come from Obbe Vermeij. He left Rockstar in 2009 and is now an indie developer. He told Rock Paper Shotgun that generative AI "really has changed the world," according to IGN's report. IGN's version of his argument runs like this: a third party could take the PS5 build, have AI convert it to PC, and produce something worse than Rockstar's own port that could still cut into sales. He added that he doesn't know what Rockstar is thinking.

A PlayStation and gaming PC overlook a neon-lit city at sunset, linked by glowing digital networks. What is confirmed, what is reported, and what is opinion

The sources fall into three levels of certainty.

  • Confirmed: GTA 6 launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. Rockstar has not given a PC date.
  • Reported, unconfirmed: GamesBeat reported on October 13 that Rockstar plans to release the PC version within the first three months of 2027, which it said came from four anonymous industry sources. The Rockstar representative it contacted hadn't responded when it published. Q1 means January through March 2027. VideoCardz, as cited in an earlier WindowsForum report, put that at between 43 and 132 days after console launch.
  • Opinion: Vermeij's view that AI cloning could be a motive for closer launch dates. No source establishes a causal link between the reported Q1 window and the AI worry. Some commentary online presents that link as fact, but it is speculation.

How much faster would that be?

GTA V is the obvious comparison. It reached PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013. Per GamesBeat, its April 2015 PC release came roughly a year and seven months later. A Q1 2027 window would be a much shorter wait. The GamesBeat report also notes that GTA V's player base skews heavily toward console. It points to Rockstar's ownership of the FiveM team and its interest in user-created content. That gives Rockstar a commercial reason to want PC sooner, with or without AI clones.

Why the AI-clone worry isn't far-fetched

  • GTA V in a browser: Tom's Hardware reported on October 6 that an unofficial GTA V port to WebAssembly, which its creator said was built with AI, went live and was taken down within hours. The site showed a Cloudflare error before being replaced. Tom's Hardware said it was unclear why the site went down, though it expected Take-Two to have raised copyright concerns. Nobody has confirmed a takedown request.
  • Claude's guardrail: Engadget reported on November 1 that Anthropic changed Claude's instructions to bar recreating a specific existing game, even if renamed. Anthropic's Addy Osmani confirmed the change on X, citing its usage policy on IP infringement. Engadget also noted a recent run of AAA games being decompiled with AI help and turned into browser versions. That includes Halo: Combat Evolved and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, as well as GTA V.

One guardrail in one model doesn't stop the practice, and Engadget makes no such claim. Other tools exist, and the change doesn't show that Rockstar's schedule responded to it.

Vermeij's own caveats

He said he doesn't see how a studio could fully protect against this. He added that Take-Two can bring in lawyers, and that for a large game "maybe the AI doesn't really do a particularly good job." BigGo Finance's summary of the interview says he estimated that converting the console build would take tens of thousands of dollars in AI tokens and many hours of machine time. I couldn't check that figure against the original RPS interview, so treat it as reported secondhand.

The PS5 jailbreak scenario

IGN also raises a hypothetical. If a PS5 jailbreak worked on the firmware GTA 6 requires, the game could be pirated, and perhaps ported. That is a scenario, not an event. No jailbreak, leak or unofficial PC build of GTA 6 has been established in the reporting.

Digital Foundry's Oliver Mackenzie, as cited by EGW, doesn't expect GTA 6 to be playable on a PS5 emulator at launch, though emulator developers will try. That is one analyst's expectation, not a finding.

What PC players should take from this

  • Don't plan around a date. Until Rockstar announces one, treat Q1 2027 as a rumor from anonymous sources.
  • Skip unofficial "PC ports." Any unofficial GTA 6 PC download is, in practical terms, a legal and security risk. Rockstar's GTA V PC release came with PC-specific work. The announcement mentioned 4K support, 60 fps and more than 25 graphics settings. I couldn't open Rockstar's page to verify those details, so they come from the research notes.
  • Console buyers should check their local store. Prices and pre-order options vary by store, and IGN's regional note advises checking the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store for your country.

Bottom line

Vermeij's theory is plausible and fits a world where AI-assisted decompilation is getting easier. But it is one former developer's speculation, sitting next to an anonymously sourced PC window. The only hard fact is the console date of November 19, 2026. Everything about PC remains unannounced.
