Rockstar Games has confirmed that digital pre-loading for Grand Theft Auto VI opens on November 10 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game launches on November 19 for both. The headline number is a free-space requirement of up to 212 GB. For Xbox owners, that figure matters well before launch, because it can force a storage rethink on a 512 GB console.

A neon-lit gaming setup displays a city-themed game download, with consoles, controllers, and a November 2025 calendar. What changed

Rockstar originally planned to enable downloads on November 12, but players who preordered the digital version can now start on November 10. That is two days earlier than the date in previous Rockstar support material. Inven Global adds that the earlier schedule dates from the June pre-order announcement.

The November 19 launch date has not moved. Only the digital pre-load window opened up.

When the Xbox pre-load starts

The two platforms use different clocks:

  • PS5: The pre-load starts on November 10 at midnight local time, in each player's time zone. The start therefore arrives at different real-world moments around the globe.
  • Xbox Series X|S: Pre-loading begins simultaneously worldwide at 12 AM GMT. That is 4pm PT / 7pm ET on November 9.

PCMag and Video Games Chronicle both give this conversion, so US Xbox owners shouldn't wait for local midnight. Digital Foundry points out the practical effect. Xbox owners west of the UK start earlier than PlayStation owners, and those east of the UK start later.

How much space you need

Rockstar's wording is a maximum. The pre-load file will be up to 212 GB, depending on the device. Some outlets describe this as a flat 212 GB install, and Shacknews says it is the space needed "to install". Rockstar's phrasing is narrower. It refers to free space for the pre-load, and it gives no per-console breakdown.

Several things are not established:

  • Whether the Xbox Series S figure is smaller. Digital Foundry assumes it might be, but that is the writer's guess, not a Rockstar statement.
  • Whether a day-one patch will add to the total. GamingBolt says 212 GB may not reflect the final size if a large day-one update ships. That is the outlet's caution, not a confirmed fact.
  • Any download-time estimate. None comes from Rockstar.

Digital Foundry compares the figure with usable storage on each console. It puts the game at about a quarter of the usable space on a 1 TB Xbox Series X, and more than half the user storage on a 512 GB Xbox Series S. Those are Digital Foundry's calculations, not Rockstar's. Check your own console's free space instead of relying on them.

Notebookcheck notes that earlier leaks pointed to roughly 210 GB for the PS5 version. Rockstar has not confirmed that number for any platform. The official statement is the 212 GB ceiling.

Getting ready on Xbox

Inven Global's reading of Rockstar's FAQ gives the conditions for automatic pre-loading on Xbox. Players who opted for the code in the box will start to see them on retail shelves starting on November 12. That covers boxed purchases, not the auto-download settings. The Xbox requirements are:

  • Turn on automatic updates on the console.
  • Leave the console powered on or in Sleep mode so the download can run.
  • Free up space before the window opens. Delete unused games or move titles to external storage if you need room, remembering that the file is large.

Rockstar's FAQ directs users to Xbox support pages for the platform-specific steps. These are the conditions for automatic downloading. The sources don't say they are the only way to start a pre-load.

Boxed copies come later

Code-in-box editions are a separate track. Digital Foundry notes that buyers of these editions can still join the pre-load, but only once they have a code to redeem. Once someone has the physical copy's code, they can redeem it in their storefront and immediately pre-load.

The practical result is that digital pre-order holders get the earliest access. Boxed buyers wait until retailers stock the product on November 12. Nobody has promised that every store will have copies at the same moment. Also, these boxes contain download codes, not game discs, according to Notebookcheck's reading of Rockstar's wording.

The PC question

Both editions are currently announced only for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Rockstar has not announced a PC release date. PCMag mentions rumors of a Q1 PC launch, and GamingBolt says Q1 2027. Those are unconfirmed. This pre-load news doesn't apply to Windows gaming PCs.

Caveats

  • Pre-load servers could be busy. Digital Foundry warns that even the pre-load may strain them, though it still recommends doing it.
  • Starting early doesn't change the November 19 launch. Digital Foundry notes that Rockstar has said the game is single-player only, so once the files are downloaded you should be a short decryption step from playing offline.
  • Rockstar's printable poster and Leonida map are a separate promotion. They go up on its site on launch day and have nothing to do with the pre-load.

Bottom line

The Xbox pre-load opens at 12 a.m. GMT on November 10, which is the evening of November 9 in the US. The requirement is up to 212 GB of free space, so look at your console's storage now. Turn on automatic updates and leave the console on or in Sleep mode. Boxed-code buyers should expect to wait until at least November 12.

Update: Additional details (November 3, 2026)

According to GTA BOOM, a double-sided physical version of the poster will be available shortly after launch for $0.99 from the Rockstar Store, or free with a store purchase.
