Grand Theft Auto VI reportedly won't unlock at the same moment everywhere. Store listings show it going live at midnight local time, one country at a time, and the first country to reach November 19 is New Zealand. Xbox players have used a workaround for this kind of launch for years: set the console's location to New Zealand and wait for the unlock there. If it works this time, some Xbox Series X|S owners in North America could start playing on the morning of November 18.

The key word is "if." Here is what has been confirmed, what has only been reported, and what you should know before changing any settings.

What's confirmed and what's reported

Rockstar's official GTA VI page gives a release date of November 19, 2026. It lists two platforms, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and says the game "plays best on" PlayStation 5. No PC version is listed, and there's still no word on when one might arrive.

Rockstar's own materials don't confirm the staggered release schedule. That information comes from store listings. Windows Central reports that the game will finally launch on November 19, 2026, at midnight in your region, which means that New Zealand gets it earliest, as 00:00 NZDT (New Zealand Daylight Time) aligns with 06:00 EST (Eastern Standard Time) on November 18.

The source matters. According to All Things How, the regional windows come from the PlayStation Store listings, and they follow a simple rule: the game goes live at 12:00 AM in each area's local time. Pure Xbox says the fan site GTAVice spotted the times first, and that IGN and Digital Foundry reported them afterwards.

This matters for Xbox owners. The published schedule describes the PS5 version. The claim that Xbox follows the same local-midnight pattern is a reasonable guess, and it has held for earlier Rockstar releases. It has not been confirmed for this game.

Summary: The date and platforms are official. The local-midnight rollout comes from PlayStation Store listings. The Xbox schedule is assumed, not published.

The time zones

If Xbox does follow the reported schedule, a New Zealand unlock converts like this:

LocationLocal time at New Zealand unlock
New Zealand (NZDT)12:00 a.m., Nov. 19
UTC11:00 a.m., Nov. 18
US Eastern (EST)6:00 a.m., Nov. 18
US Central (CST)5:00 a.m., Nov. 18
US Pacific (PST)3:00 a.m., Nov. 18

All Things How reports that every other region follows at its own local midnight, ending with Mexico and Central America at 06:00 UTC on November 19 — a spread of about 19 hours.

How big is the head start?

GameRant says West Coast Xbox players who get up early could have more than 20 hours on PS5 players. That holds only if US regions each unlock at their own local midnight. Midnight Pacific is 08:00 UTC on November 19, which is 21 hours after New Zealand's 11:00 UTC unlock.

Not every report agrees. Gfinity Esports says that for those in the United States, you will get to play at midnight Eastern. In that case the whole US unlocks together at 05:00 UTC, and the lead over New Zealand drops to about 18 hours. All Things How says the last unlock is Mexico and Central America at 06:00 UTC. That also doesn't fit a separate Pacific-time unlock for the US West Coast.

So there's no single answer. The head start is somewhere between about 18 and 21 hours, depending on your time zone and on how the US schedule actually works. It's still a large gap, but you won't know the exact figure until launch.

Summary: Players on the US East Coast who manage to get in on New Zealand time would start around 6 a.m. ET on November 18. The "20+ hours" figure needs an unconfirmed per-time-zone US schedule.

Why this works on Xbox but not PS5

It comes down to how easily each console lets you change region. Windows Central notes that PS5 users can't change their console's region so easily to trick the system, while Xbox Series X|S gamers can still head to their Settings menu and change their Language & location settings. The PS5 route is harder. PlayStation 5 owners can put extra effort into making a new account, but that also means finding a way to buy the game in the local NZ$ currency. In practice, that means buying a second copy.

This isn't new. When the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of GTA V launched in 2022, Sportskeeda reported they came out at 12:00 AM local time across the globe, and that New Zealand will be the first country to do so. Rockstar has used this rollout before, and players tried the same trick then.

How to change your Xbox location

Microsoft's support documentation describes the official steps for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Microsoft presents this as the process for people who are moving country, not as a way to unlock games early:

  1. Sign in to your Xbox console.
  2. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  3. Go to Profile & system > Settings > System > Language & location.
  4. Under Location, choose the new country or region from the drop-down list.
  5. Change your system language or language region too if you need to, then select Restart now.

GamingHQ describes the trick the same way. Players change the location of their Xbox console to New Zealand, restart the system and potentially gain access when the game becomes available in that region.

How you'll know if it worked

When the console restarts, the dashboard and Store should be set to New Zealand. At about 6:00 a.m. ET (3:00 a.m. PT) on November 18, the game's Store page or its tile on your console should show that it's playable. If it's still locked or still counting down, the trick hasn't worked this time. The only fix is to wait for your own region's launch.

Before you change anything

Microsoft's advice is clear. It recommends changing region only if you're moving to a new country for a long time, because items bought in one region might not work in another. It names Game Pass, apps, games, movies and Microsoft account balances among the things that can be affected. Microsoft's guidance also says:

  • Microsoft account funds don't move between regions. This rule is about your account region, not the console location setting described above. Don't mix the two up. Changing your account region is more serious.
  • Account region changes have limits. Microsoft says one reason you might not be able to change country or region is that you already changed it in the last three months.
  • You can switch back. Microsoft's instructions say you can return to your original region at any time.

Pure Xbox adds that these timestamps come from store pages and can still shift before launch, according to All Things How, and that switching regions without actually moving is done at your own risk.

Summary: The console setting takes about a minute to change. What happens afterwards (whether your purchase is recognised, the game unlocks, and updates download) is outside your control.

What could stop it working

There are several things that could break the trick:

  • Your purchase has to be recognised in the new region. Windows Central thinks it should be fairly simple if you pre-ordered in your home country, but nobody can guarantee that until launch day.
  • Rockstar may change the plan. New Game Network reports that Rockstar Games... and publisher Take-Two Interactive have not commented publicly on whether any adjustments to the rollout structure are planned before GTA 6 launches. Rockstar could move to a single worldwide unlock, or add a check that blocks early access.
  • Day-one patches. If the game needs a launch update that is released on a different schedule from the unlock, your early start could turn into waiting for a download.
  • Pre-load timing. Gfinity reports that pre-loads starting November 12, but Rockstar hasn't confirmed that date. Downloading early is a good idea whatever you decide about the region trick.

The download is especially important this time. GamingHQ reports that boxed copies reportedly will not contain a traditional playable game disc. Instead, the box will contain a download code. If that's accurate, even people who buy a boxed copy will need to download the game, and a pre-load is the only way to be ready right at unlock.

Is this a reason to buy an Xbox?

Probably not. GameRant also says the trick is unlikely to move many consoles, and the reasons are mostly practical. At best you get a lead of several hours, if it works, if Rockstar doesn't change the rollout, and if you're willing to get up before dawn. That's a fun bonus for people who already own an Xbox. It isn't much of a reason to choose a platform.

If you have an Xbox Series X|S, the sensible plan is:

  1. Pre-order and pre-load the game as soon as pre-loading opens.
  2. Check the game's Store countdown on your console in the days before launch.
  3. If you want to try the trick, change your console location on November 17 or earlier in the evening (US time) so you have time to restart and troubleshoot.
  4. Set your location back to your real country once you're playing.

Bottom line

The reported PlayStation Store schedule puts New Zealand first at 11:00 UTC on November 18. If Xbox follows the same pattern, players who set their console location to New Zealand could start playing GTA VI hours before their local midnight. Changing the setting is easy and reversible, and it's documented by Microsoft. Nobody has confirmed that it will unlock the game early. Treat it as a possible bonus, and pre-load either way.
