The short version for Windows users is to copy a screenshot with Win+Shift+S and press Alt+V in the Claude Code prompt. Ctrl+V pastes text only. Blogger JD Hodges describes the failure mode well: press Ctrl+V after copying a screenshot and Claude just stares at you. There is no error and no message. That silence is the main reason people think Windows image paste is broken.
The three ways to give Claude Code an image
Fello AI lists three official methods:
- Drag and drop the file into the Claude Code window.
- Paste from the clipboard. The shortcut varies by platform.
- Put a file path in your prompt, for example
Analyze this image: C:\Users\you\Pictures\shot.png.
A file path never touches the clipboard. That makes it the fallback for scripts, SSH sessions and any setup where paste misbehaves.
Which paste shortcut to use
The shortcut depends on where Claude Code is running. The SmartScope guide, which cites Anthropic's interactive-mode documentation, gives the same breakdown as Fello AI. It is Ctrl+V on macOS and Linux (Cmd+V in iTerm2), Alt+V on Windows, and Ctrl+V or Alt+V on WSL. On WSL, use Alt+V if your terminal intercepts Ctrl+V.
| Environment | Image paste key | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Windows (PowerShell, Windows Terminal, Command Prompt) | Alt+V | Ctrl+V pastes text only |
| WSL | Alt+V or Ctrl+V | Alt+V is safer, because the terminal often takes Ctrl+V |
| macOS | Ctrl+V | Cmd+V is the terminal's own text paste, except in iTerm2 |
| Linux | Ctrl+V | Needs xclip (X11) or wl-clipboard (Wayland) |
On WSL, developer Swap Biswas gives the likely reason for the Ctrl+V conflict. Claude Code binds both keys, but Windows Terminal's paste command takes priority over a Linux program's Ctrl+V.
If Alt+V is taken by something else on your system, Fello AI says you can run /keybindings and bind another key to the chat:imagePaste action. SmartScope names the same action.
Windows step by step
- Press Win+Shift+S and capture the area you want.
- Click into the Claude Code prompt.
- Press Alt+V. An
[Image #1]chip appears at the cursor. - Type your question and press Enter.
Fello AI says the chip sits wherever you place it in your sentence. You can write something like "make [Image #1] look like [Image #2]."
If Alt+V reports that no image was found, update with claude update. Fello AI says the fix landed in v2.1.141. It also says Alt+V itself arrived much earlier, in v1.0.93. Swap Biswas's version table gives the same two points: v1.0.93 on 26 August 2025 added Alt+V for pasting images on Windows, and v2.1.141 fixed the "no image found" error after Alt+V with a screenshot copied.
WSL history and fallbacks
Fello AI traces WSL's problems to Windows copying clipboard images as BMP, which older builds rejected. It lists these fixes:
- v2.1.47 handled BMP.
- v2.1.136 added a PowerShell fallback.
- v2.1.157 added Alt+V on WSL, Windows 11 screenshot paste and drag-and-drop from File Explorer.
Swap Biswas's table gives the same v2.1.47 and v2.1.157 entries. It dates them 18 February 2026 and 29 May 2026.
If paste still fails, you have two fallbacks:
- Use a file path. Save the screenshot, then translate the Windows path.
C:\Users\me\Pictures\shot.pngbecomes/mnt/c/Users/me/Pictures/shot.png. - Export the clipboard with PowerShell. Fello AI gives this command:
powershell.exe -Command "(Get-Clipboard -Format Image).Save('shot.png')". Then pass that file to Claude Code.
SSH: paste cannot work
When Claude Code runs on a remote machine, it cannot see your local clipboard. Copy the file across with scp, then reference it by path:
scp ~/Desktop/shot.png you@server:~/project/screenshots/
Then prompt with Look at ./screenshots/shot.png. Anthropic's release notes back this up. They record a fix for pasting an image over SSH to a Linux machine doing nothing silently. The prompt now tells you to copy the file over and paste its path. Fello AI places that change at v2.1.314. The release notes I checked list it among other fixes without a clear version label here, so treat the exact number with some caution.
Other surfaces and limits
Fello AI also covers these points. I could not confirm the version numbers against primary documentation.
- VS Code extension: Paste into the prompt box, or hold Shift while dragging a file in. The guide says pasting under WSL has attached images correctly since v2.1.267.
- Formats: Claude reads JPEG, PNG, GIF (first frame only) and WebP. Claude Code converts some other formats, such as macOS clipboard TIFF and Windows BMP. PNG is the best default for screenshots.
- Size: Fello AI says pasted images are shrunk to 2,000 pixels on the long side. It also lists API limits, such as 8000 x 8000 pixels per image. Check Anthropic's current documentation before relying on those numbers.
- Image generation: The guide says Claude Code analyzes images but cannot create them. It can write SVG or HTML, or call an outside image model through a script or MCP server.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Shortcut: Alt+V on Windows and WSL, not Ctrl+V.
- Clipboard contents: Make sure the screenshot went to the clipboard and not just to a file.
- Version: Run
claude --version, thenclaude update. - Linux: Install
xcliporwl-clipboard. - SSH: Don't paste. Use
scpand a path. - Format: Convert odd formats to PNG.
- Last resort: Drag the file in or type its path.
Bottom line
Windows image paste in Claude Code works, but only through Alt+V, and only on a reasonably current build. The common failures come from using the wrong key, running an old version, or trying to paste over SSH. When in doubt, save the screenshot and give Claude the path. Fello AI's guide is also a pitch for its own Mac app. The Windows steps hold up on their own, and independent sources corroborate them.
