A farmer, dog, and friendly robot tend glowing crops in a colorful alien landscape beneath a ringed planet.
Lightyear Frontier, the mech farming game that has spent more than two and a half years in Early Access, now has a release date for version 1.0. Gematsu reports that the game will leave Early Access and launch for Xbox Series and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store on November 4, publisher Coffee Stain Publishing and developer FRAME BREAK announced.

For Windows and Xbox players, the key detail is where it lands. The Microsoft Store is named alongside Steam, so PC players keep two ways to buy it, and Xbox Series owners are covered too. The game started in Microsoft's ecosystem, so this is less a new arrival than a graduation.

The key facts

  • Release date: November 4, which ends Early Access
  • Platforms: Xbox Series and PC
  • PC stores: Steam and Microsoft Store
  • Publisher / developer: Coffee Stain Publishing / FRAME BREAK
  • Early Access start: Lightyear Frontier first launched in Early Access on March 19, 2024.
  • Not yet announced: launch time or time zone, final price, Game Pass status for 1.0, save-transfer policy and system requirements

The announcement names no PlayStation or Nintendo versions. It doesn't mention Xbox One either.

Summary: A firm date is set for Xbox Series, Steam and the Microsoft Store. Many of the practical details are still unknown.

A Game Pass and Game Preview history

Xbox players may remember how this game started. In February 2024, Xbox Wire said the game would arrive in Xbox Game Preview on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and with Game Pass on March 19! Game Preview is Xbox's version of Early Access. The store listing for the preview build still comes with the usual warning: it may or may not change over time or release as a final product.

At that launch, GodisaGeek reported that the game was now available on PC and Xbox Series S|X, and in Game Pass. It also reported an Xbox Store price of $24.99 / £20.99 / €24,99 for the Early Access version. The Xbox store listing for the Game Preview edition currently says it is Cloud playable with XBOX Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate.

What we don't know: whether version 1.0 will be on Game Pass on November 4. It seems likely given the game's history, but nothing in the new announcement confirms it. Until Microsoft or the publisher says so, treat it as unconfirmed.

What's changing in 1.0

The official Steam Community announcement says Lightyear Frontier 1.0 will arrive on 4 November! It lists some highlights:

  • Powerful new Tool upgrades, Mods like the Seed Shooter Minigun, Skyblazer flying Transform Mode, and overhauled mech customization
  • Reworked, smoother progression, with fewer Deliveries overall and the ability to queue multiple Deliveries
  • According to the developers, a whole lot more!

Yes, a seed-shooting minigun. You won't find that on an ordinary tractor.

The Steam store page's Early Access section had already set expectations. It says the developers extended their original 18-month Early Access plan to make bigger changes to the core gameplay and the planet. It also says the full game would add new environments, plants, resources, animals, hazards, mech parts and mod chips. That's a statement of plans, though, not a checklist for launch day. We'll only know what actually shipped once people are playing 1.0.

Summary: The confirmed 1.0 features are mostly mech and progression changes. The earlier roadmap is useful background but doesn't guarantee what's in the release.

What the game is

For anyone new to it, Gematsu's summary of the Steam page describes a game where you build your farm, customize your mech, grow alien crops, and explore a vast new world full of promise with up to three friends! You also craft new parts and mod chips to tweak your mech's performance to your specifications. The store description also covers crop rotation, building a retro-futuristic homestead, sending goods to distant colonies, meeting neighbors and raising alien livestock.

It's a relaxed game. When the Early Access version launched, Xbox Wire described a low-stress, combat-free experience without the need to manage things like thirst and hunger. The minigun, then, is for seeds rather than enemies.

For multiplayer, Xbox Wire said in 2024 that the game allows up to four players to explore together online, with full cross play. Steam also currently lists cross-platform multiplayer, Steam Cloud and Family Sharing. The new announcement doesn't say whether any of that changes in 1.0, so don't assume particular Steam-to-Xbox or Microsoft Store-to-Steam setups work until someone tests them.

Advice for current owners and fence-sitters

  1. Expect a higher price. On the Steam page, the developers have said the full release will cost more than Early Access, and that they'll announce the new price well before launch. The actual 1.0 price hasn't been announced, and the timing is getting close.
  2. Pick a store carefully. Steam and the Microsoft Store are separate purchases. Nothing announced so far suggests saves or licenses move between them, so choose based on where your friends play and whether you use Game Pass on PC.
  3. Back up your saves. Big updates that rework progression can affect old save files. The developers haven't published a save-compatibility policy for 1.0. If you've built a large farm, make your own backup before November 4 rather than rely only on cloud sync.
  4. Wait for Game Pass news. Subscribers who played the Game Preview version should hold off on buying until Microsoft confirms whether the 1.0 build is included.

Why it matters

Early Access and Game Preview are a trade-off: players get in early and help shape the game, and developers get feedback and income before they finish. The developers say this feedback has shaped almost every part of the game. Many Early Access games stay unfinished for years, so a set 1.0 date is a good sign here.

For Microsoft, the game is also a small success for Game Preview. A game from a smaller studio launched through Game Pass on Xbox and PC and made it to a full release, while still selling on Steam too. That arrangement is common now, and it's good for players.

Whether the full game holds up is still an open question, and November 4 will answer it. For now, Xbox Series and PC players have a date, two PC stores to choose from, and some useful decisions to make before launch.
