Mafia III: Definitive Edition got two things on October 8, 2026. One is a PC patch that reportedly adds new display options. The other is a free native upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, tied to the game's tenth anniversary. This piece covers both, keeps them separate, and notes where the evidence is thin.

Publisher 2K describes a new Steam update bringing quality-of-life enhancements to Mafia III: Definitive Edition. It also says the game is now available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements. MP1st calls the PC patch "Update 1.12". The Worthplaying report, which carries the same release notes, does not use that label in the excerpt I could see. I found no primary 2K page confirming the number. Treat "1.12" as MP1st's label, not as an official build number.

Console side: what you need to know

Is it a remake? No. 2K Support describes it as the same 2020 Definitive Edition, now with 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements. That fits Push Square's earlier reporting on the Mafia trilogy: the Mafia 2 and Mafia 3 versions in the Omertà Collection were the same Definitive Editions already on PS4, without enhancements. Expect a smoother frame rate and bug fixes, not new content.

Who gets it free? 2K Support says the upgrade is free for owners of Mafia III: Definitive Edition, Mafia: Trilogy, or The Omertà Collection. Insider Gaming says digital owners of Mafia 3: Definitive Edition, The Omertà Collection or the Mafia: Trilogy bundles get the update at no extra cost. The ownership boundary is the Definitive Edition or one of those bundles. Don't assume that every owner of the original 2016 release qualifies.

How do you claim it on Xbox? 2K's page says the cross-gen version should already be in your library if you bought the game on Xbox on or after October 8. If you bought the Trilogy or Omertà edition earlier, check your library and the game will be waiting there. If you own only the standalone Definitive Edition, find the Series X|S listing in the Xbox store, where it downloads for free. 2K also says Xbox does not support upgrading from 8th-generation discs to 9th-generation.

Pure Xbox gives similar advice. It says digital owners may need to search for the Series X|S version manually on the Xbox Store to add it to their library. It also notes the game supports Xbox Disc to Digital, so claiming the digital license with the disc should, in theory, make you eligible. That is Pure Xbox's inference, not an official guarantee.

How do you claim it on PlayStation? 2K says PS4 owners who bought the game (alone or in a bundle) before October 8 get the PS5 digital version free through the PlayStation Store. Physical-disc owners need a PS5 with a disc drive. They use the update prompt in Game Hub and must keep the PS4 disc in the console to play. 2K adds that a monthly PS+ game does not count as a digital purchase of Mafia III: Definitive Edition.

Saves and achievements. 2K says existing players cannot carry save files or achievements from the PS4 or Xbox One versions to the PS5 and Series X|S versions. If you are mid-campaign on last-gen hardware, plan for a fresh start. Insider Gaming reports the same restriction.

Is it 60 FPS everywhere? No. Per the release notes, many cinematics are rendered in real time and run at 60 FPS like gameplay. Some cinematics are pre-rendered movies that still play at 30 FPS.

The PC patch: what is reportedly fixed

The following comes from the release notes as MP1st and Worthplaying reproduced them. I could not verify every item against a primary 2K patch page.

Display options for PC players

  • A toggle to turn off the game window borders.
  • New FPS lock options at 120, 144, 180 and 240.
  • Better multi-monitor handling in windowed mode.
  • A fix for physics problems when playing windowed with VSync on.
  • A fix for the mouse cursor escaping the game window on multi-monitor setups.

For a game that originally shipped with a restrictive frame cap, the new FPS lock choices are probably the most useful change on high-refresh monitors. The notes don't say what the previous options were or how the game behaves above those caps, so I won't speculate.

Progression and stability

  • Players reportedly stuck in the missions "Get Enzo Conti," "Kill Tommy Marcano," and the Epilogue.
  • Crashes while driving into the Wharf, shooting a gas canister in "Destroy Boosted Car Shipment," or unlocking certain achievements mid-drive.
  • Completed objectives that stayed marked incomplete, and a district map that failed to display after certain objectives.
  • Wiretap map data and junction-box functionality lost after finishing the Stones Unturned DLC.
  • The game staying in slow motion after certain sequences.
  • Achievement progress lost if the game was closed mid-session.
  • Weapon and weapon-upgrade issues.
  • Instability in cutscenes, save loading and combat.

Visuals, audio and UI

  • Flickering or incorrect lighting indoors and outdoors.
  • Objects rendering with a metallic or overexposed look.
  • Square artifacts.
  • Inconsistent shadows on Lincoln and nearby NPCs.
  • Longer lighting draw distance on buildings, streetlights and gas stations.
  • Missing audio and graphical glitches in cutscenes.
  • Missing or misplaced waypoints.
  • Placeholder text and debug text at the end of cinematics.
  • Subtitle settings resetting at launch.
  • Crosshair problems.
  • Missing or corrupted text in non-English languages.

The notes say these were "addressed" or "improved". They don't claim every instance of each bug is gone, so some players may still see edge cases.

What the notes don't say

  • No PC operating system, GPU, driver or minimum-spec changes are listed. I won't infer any.
  • No download size or rollout schedule is given.
  • The console notes are separate and cover similar ground: trophy and achievement tracking, progression blockers, vegetation streaming and pop-in, and map and waypoint accuracy. They also repeat the Stones Unturned fix.

The sale

2K's announcement, as relayed by Worthplaying, says the game is 80% off on PlayStation, Xbox and Steam for a limited time, as part of a Mafia franchise sale. I haven't checked live store prices, so check the listing before you buy.

The bottom line

  • Console players with a qualifying digital copy or disc: claim the free upgrade. You get 60 FPS gameplay but lose your old saves and achievements.
  • PC players: the patch looks like a real stability and quality-of-life pass, with FPS-cap and multi-monitor options aimed at higher-refresh displays. Confirm the patch applied through your platform's update flow.
  • Everyone: watch for follow-up notes. A primary 2K changelog would settle the "1.12" label and the full list of fixes.
