A Steam Deck displays a blocky adventure game in a torch-lit Minecraft-style scene, with Linux and Proton compatibility cues.
Minecraft Dungeons II is scheduled to release on September 29, but SteamOS and Linux players have an early warning: GamingOnLinux reports that the Windows version reaches a black screen when run through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer. That is a reported launch failure, not a confirmed finding that the game fails on every Linux setup.

What is known—and what is not

GamingOnLinux says it was told that a Microsoft Game Services dependency causes the Proton failure. The report does not provide logs, a Proton version, or a reproducible test procedure, so that explanation remains unconfirmed. It also does not establish that installing the game through Steam requires the Microsoft Store.

Asked about Linux support, Mojang developer Marc Watson said the team had not announced support for that platform. He described adding platforms as a deliberate decision involving priorities, opportunity, and team capacity. His response is not a promise of a fix—or a declaration that one is impossible.

The official listings help define the boundary. Minecraft’s system requirements specify Windows 10 64-bit, version 1703 or newer, for both minimum and recommended configurations, plus DirectX 11; they do not list Linux or SteamOS. Steam’s listing requires a Microsoft Account, but an account requirement alone does not prove which component is behind the reported black screen.

What Steam Deck players should take from this

A Steam listing and SteamOS compatibility are two different things. Valve explains that Proton runs Windows games on Linux-based devices, but may encounter blocking incompatibilities with Windows functionality or other required software. Valve also says customers can encounter games in the Steam store even when those games may not work well on their device.

The original Minecraft Dungeons working under Linux, as GamingOnLinux notes, is encouraging history—not a compatibility guarantee for its sequel. For now, Steam Deck and Linux users should treat Minecraft Dungeons II as a Windows-listed game with a reported Proton launch problem. No particular Proton setting or workaround is established by the available evidence. The useful next signal would be a documented fix or a compatibility test, rather than an assumption that either Mojang or Valve has already solved the black screen.
