More than 300,000 people play Minecraft for the first time on an average day, according to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. It is a striking claim for a game first made publicly available more than 17 years ago—but the words “first time” and “average” matter as much as the number. Sharma shared the figure alongside the September 26 Minecraft Live announcements.

A big number with a narrow meaning

Sharma is describing a flow of first-time players, not the number playing on any given day. Her statement does not say that 300,000 people buy Minecraft daily, that exactly that many arrive every calendar day, or that they all play on Xbox or Windows PC. It also gives no measurement period, platform breakdown, or explanation of how a first-time player is identified. Without those details, the figure cannot be directly compared with monthly active users or sales.

Sharma also cited more than 425 million copies sold. That is her reported figure, not a separately verified total in the information available here. For context, Mojang said in October 2023 that Minecraft had passed 300 million copies sold. The newer claim may represent subsequent growth, but Sharma’s brief statement does not explain how it was calculated. Nor can first-time players be counted as new copy sales: playing for the first time does not necessarily mean buying a copy that day.

What players were shown

The audience claim arrived amid plans to give existing players—and perhaps some newcomers—more to explore. Mojang unveiled the Sift, its first new Minecraft dimension in more than 14 years. Players are due to encounter it first in the action-RPG spin-off Minecraft Dungeons II, scheduled for September 29, 2026. Mojang says the dimension will also come to Minecraft Java and Bedrock editions in 2027; it is not an update already available in the main game.

The presentation also previewed ice caves and a frozen zombie variant for a forthcoming game drop. Those are announcements, not features players should expect to find in their current worlds yet. Dungeons II, developed with Double Eleven, is planned for PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.

For Xbox and PC readers, the takeaway is less a new player-count leaderboard than a sign of Minecraft’s reported reach. Sharma says the game still draws substantial numbers of people trying it for the first time. How many stay, where they play, and how that translates into sales remain unanswered. The new dimension gives longtime players something concrete to anticipate, but there is no evidence that its announcement produced the newcomer figure.

Update: Report claims Minecraft Switch 2 edition is due October 27 (September 28, 2026)

OtakuKart reports that Minecraft is scheduled to arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, 2026, extending the main game to another current-generation Nintendo platform.

According to the outlet, existing Nintendo Switch owners will be able to upgrade, but the enhanced Switch 2 version will not be offered as a wholly free upgrade. Neither Microsoft nor Mojang details are included in the report on pricing, upgrade eligibility, graphical changes, cross-save handling, or whether the release date varies by region.

If confirmed, the release would give Minecraft another route to acquire first-time players beyond Xbox, Windows, and its existing console platforms. For current players, the practical question will be whether their existing worlds, Marketplace purchases, and multiplayer access carry across under the upgrade terms.
