According to the project's release page, the changes from 2.8.4 to 2.8.5 include updated LAV Filters (0.83-20-gd8d8a) and an updated MPC Video Renderer (0.11.2.2638). Neowin's changelog lists the same items.
What's new in 2.8.5
Neowin's changelog and the project's release notes agree on the following:
- LAV Filters moves to version 0.83-20-gd8d8a.
- MPC Video Renderer moves to version 0.11.2.2638.
- Complex subtitles: the internal subtitle renderer gets "significant performance improvements" when rendering complex subtitles.
- Rounded corners: there is a new option to draw rounded corners when the default subtitle style uses an opaque box.
- Show history hotkey: there is a new hotkey entry for opening the "Show history" dialog.
- Fixes: the notes list only "lots of small fixes and improvements".
The notes give no benchmarks, no definition of "complex", and no breakdown of the small fixes. The speedup is real according to the developer, but nobody has quantified it. The notes also don't say where the rounded-corner option lives in the settings. They don't give a default key for the history hotkey either. The hotkey is an entry you can bind yourself, which fits MPC-HC's customizable keys under Options > Player > Keys. That page has a search box above the table.
Release verification
The release is on the official project page. The clsid2 GitHub release for 2.8.5 is marked Latest and was published on 6 November. The K-Lite maker Codec Guide also lists 2.8.5 as the latest version, dated November 6th 2026. Neowin's write-up followed on 7 November.
Several download aggregators list sizes of about 22.1 MB for the x64 installer and 20.6 MB for the x86 installer. They also list portable archives. Neowin gives roughly 30 MB for its x64 download. The sizes differ by package type and source, so don't treat any one number as the only correct figure.
The Chocolatey package for 2.8.5 exists. Its verification notes say it pulls the installers from the official GitHub release and lists checksums to compare against. Chocolatey's own disclaimer says moderators don't necessarily validate the safety of the underlying software. Downloading from the project's GitHub release is the most direct route.
Where this fits in the recent release run
2.8.5 follows a fast sequence of releases, going by the project's release list:
| Version | Date | Headline changes |
|---|---|---|
| 2.8.3 | 8 Oct | New modern theme variant based on Windows 11 design, selectable under Options > Advanced > ModernThemeStyle. Optional native Windows 11 menus with rounded corners. HLG tonemapping in EVR-CP/Sync. Improved CUE parsing. |
| 2.8.4 | 18 Oct | MPC Video Renderer 0.10.10.2618 with improved HDR-to-SDR tonemapping. A fix for a 2.8.3 hang when first showing the seek preview. |
| 2.8.5 | 6 Nov | LAV Filters and MPC Video Renderer updates, faster complex-subtitle rendering, subtitle box rounded corners, history hotkey. |
Neowin's intro says the latest version brings a Windows 11-style theme. That theme arrived in 2.8.3, not 2.8.5. The same goes for the HDR tonemapping work, which came in 2.8.4. Neowin's long feature overview is general documentation, not a list of 2.8.5 changes. Dark theme, seekbar preview, playback speed steps, A-B repeat, subtitle search and yt-dlp streaming all predate this release.
Who should care
- Anime and fansub viewers. Complex, styled subtitles are the likeliest place to notice the renderer work, though your results will depend on the content and your hardware.
- Anyone who customizes subtitle appearance. The opaque-box rounded corners are a cosmetic option for the default style. The notes tie it to that style only.
- HDR users on MPC Video Renderer. You get the newer renderer build. The notes don't describe what changed in it, so don't expect specific HDR gains.
- Users who rely on history or resume. The new hotkey entry gives faster access to the Show history dialog. Resume itself is configured under Options > Player > History.
Practical tips from the project's own notes
The project's release page repeats some useful setup advice:
- HDR needs the right renderer. Playback needs MPC Video Renderer or madVR, selectable under Options > Playback > Output. The page warns that colors will be wrong with other renderers.
- Hardware decoding. For best results with MPCVR on Windows 10 or 11, the project suggests setting the LAV Video Decoder hardware decoder to D3D11.
- URL streaming. Put yt-dlp.exe in the MPC-HC folder, then use Menu > File > Open File/URL. Adding ffmpeg.exe lets yt-dlp download at the best quality. The project also says optimal YouTube support may need deno.exe in the same folder as yt-dlp.
- OpenSubtitles error 406. The project says downloads can fail when the daily quota runs out. Setting up a personal OpenSubtitles.com account under Options > Subtitles > Misc may get around it.
Bottom line
This is a tidy point release, not a redesign. If you use styled subtitles, take it for the faster renderer. If you don't, it is a routine component refresh. The project's own readme lists support for Windows 7 through 11, and the code is GPL v3.
