What users found
Redditors found the new controls in NVIDIA App 11.0.9.585 under System > Advanced. Reddit user Warkratos is credited with spotting the setting. The control lets you tilt GPU priority between the app in front and the work running behind it.
Reported defaults and limits differ between outlets:
- VideoCardz says the default is reportedly an 80/20 foreground/background split, a foreground-priority mode moves it to 90/10, and custom settings can reach 95/5.
- TweakTown describes the sliders as topping out at 90/10 and says the app gives 80% to the foreground app by default.
- The caps differ (90/10 versus 95/5), so I'd treat the exact slider range as unsettled. It may depend on which mode you pick.
The percentages are probably not hard limits. Wccftech cautions that they shouldn't necessarily be read as strict GPU utilization limits, and that NVIDIA hasn't explained how the mechanism works. Don't assume that "80%" reserves 80% of your GPU.
What NVIDIA has said
NVIDIA's October 28 RTX Spark announcement describes a resource-management control in the NVIDIA App. It lets users prioritize the foreground app for the best performance, or give a background agent more resources so it finishes sooner. NVIDIA says the control is under System > Advanced and requires hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) to be enabled in Windows Settings. The announcement frames this as an RTX Spark feature and doesn't mention GeForce.
The 11.0.9.585 release highlights list DLSS Override support for more games, Optimal Settings support for another title, and general stability and security fixes. Wccftech also notes that NVIDIA's release notes for 11.0.9.585 make no mention of GPU App Prioritization. That omission isn't proof of an accident. It does mean NVIDIA hasn't documented the feature for GeForce.
It isn't showing up for everyone
Availability is patchy:
- The setting is available on at least one GeForce RTX 5090 system.
- One user with an RTX 5070 Ti on driver 621.12 and NVIDIA App 11.0.9.585 cannot see it.
- Wccftech's RTX 4090 test system, running NVIDIA App 11.0.9.585 and Game Ready driver 621.01, doesn't show it either.
- Multiplayer.it reports the option is also missing on its RTX 4080 test PC with the same app version and hotfix driver 621.14.
Hardwarepremium notes the conflicting reports suggest GPU generation alone doesn't explain who gets it. Possible explanations are a staged rollout, driver requirements or hardware conditions. None is confirmed.
TweakTown says it "may" work on modern NVIDIA GPUs if HAGS is enabled. That is a reasonable guess, but the evidence doesn't confirm it. HAGS is NVIDIA's stated prerequisite for Spark, and the reports above show it isn't enough on its own to make the control appear on GeForce.
How to check your own system
- Update to NVIDIA App 11.0.9.585 or later.
- Confirm hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling is on in Windows Settings. NVIDIA names this as a requirement for the Spark feature.
- Open the NVIDIA App and go to System > Advanced.
- Look for GPU App Prioritization. If it's missing, that matches what several RTX 50-, 40- and 30-class owners and reviewers have reported. Reinstalling won't necessarily change that.
Could it help streamers and gamers?
TweakTown suggests game streamers could use it to balance a game against OBS. That's plausible, since both compete for GPU time. But I found no controlled testing showing frame-rate gains, better stream quality, or the cost to the background job. Fanáticos del Hardware says the feature's presence doesn't yet prove a real performance improvement. The same is true in reverse: favoring the background app could slow your game.
The takeaway
The strongest supported reading is that a Spark-announced control has appeared on some GeForce systems before any official GeForce announcement. It may be gated by something NVIDIA hasn't explained, or it may be pulled back. If you have it, treat it as experimental. Change one setting at a time and compare your own results. If you don't have it, you aren't missing a confirmed benefit.
