What shipped in Rainmeter 4.5.27
Rainmeter's GitHub repository lists the build as the October 6, 2026 release of Rainmeter 4.5.27, tagged v4.5.27.3934. The releases page shows it as 4.5.27 Release (revision 3934) Latest. Neowin listed it the next day.
The changelog is short. Neowin carries the project's own description of it as a small maintenance release before the upcoming Rainmeter 5.0 release. There are two groups of fixes:
- Lua scripting: Fixed several instances of memory corruption and crashes.
- WebParser, NowPlaying and RecycleManager measures: Fixed potential freezing/crashes by improving thread-safety.
There are no new features, no performance claims and no security advisory. It is a stability release.
Section summary: 4.5.27 (build 3934) fixes memory corruption in Lua scripting and thread-safety problems in three measure types. Nothing else changed.
Who these fixes actually help
Rainmeter is not one monolithic app. Each skin is built from "measures," which collect data, and "meters," which draw it. Whether this update matters to you depends on which parts your skins use. Here is the practical breakdown, based on how these components are generally used in Rainmeter skins:
| Component | Typical use in skins | Why the fix matters |
|---|---|---|
| Lua scripting | Custom logic, animations, data processing | Memory corruption can cause crashes that are hard to trace |
| WebParser | Pulling weather, RSS, or other online data | Network fetches running alongside the UI need thread safety |
| NowPlaying | Media player "now playing" widgets | Polls an external player, which is a classic race-condition setup |
| RecycleManager | Recycle Bin item count and size, emptying the bin | Background queries could freeze or crash |
If your setup is a plain clock and a RAM meter, you probably won't notice any difference. If you run a big suite with a weather panel, a Spotify-style player widget and a Lua-driven animated dock, this is the kind of fix that turns "Rainmeter randomly disappears twice a week" into a solved problem. The changelog doesn't name specific scripts, triggers or affected earlier builds, though. Don't assume every odd Lua glitch you've ever had is now gone.
Is it a must-install? It isn't a security patch, so there's no emergency. It is still the newest build in the 4.5 line, and on older systems it's the last one you'll get. There's little reason to skip it.
Section summary: The update matters most to users whose skins rely on Lua, web data, media-player integration or Recycle Bin widgets.
The bigger news: 4.5.27 is the end of the line for legacy PCs
The more important part of this release is a notice about the next one. According to the changelog, Rainmeter 5.0 will require a recent 64-bit version of Windows 10 (version 1903 or later) or Windows 11. It also states plainly that Rainmeter 4.5.27 is the last version to support older Windows versions and 32-bit systems. The project's official Rainmeter 4.5 changes page carries the same maintenance release before the upcoming Rainmeter 5.0 release notice, so this is the developers' own statement and not a third-party reading of it.
The two requirements are separate. The 5.0 minimums do not apply to 4.5.27. Rainmeter's homepage lists the 4.5.27 Release download as Windows 7 or above. MajorGeeks' listing for the same build also shows support for Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7. That gives the following support picture:
| Your system | Rainmeter 4.5.27 | Rainmeter 5.0 (announced) |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1 | Supported | Not supported |
| Windows 10 before version 1903 | Supported | Not supported |
| Any 32-bit Windows | Supported | Not supported |
| 64-bit Windows 10 1903+ | Supported | Supported |
| 64-bit Windows 11 | Supported | Supported |
The project hasn't given a release date for 5.0, and none is offered here.
For most WindowsForum readers this will change nothing, since 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 cover nearly every PC sold in years. But Rainmeter has a long history on retro rigs, budget machines and kept-alive Windows 7 boxes. On those systems, 4.5.27 is the version to keep.
Section summary: 4.5.27 still runs on Windows 7 and later, including 32-bit. Rainmeter 5.0 will require 64-bit Windows 10 1903+ or Windows 11.
How to check whether your PC makes the 5.0 cut
These are standard Windows checks:
- Check the architecture. Open Settings > System > About and look at System type. If it says "32-bit operating system," Rainmeter 4.5.27 is your last stop.
- Check the Windows version. Press Win + R, type
winverand press Enter. Windows 10 needs to show version 1903 or later to qualify for 5.0. - Check your Rainmeter version. Right-click the Rainmeter tray icon and open About to see which build you're running.
- Keep the installer. If your machine won't qualify for 5.0, save a copy of the 4.5.27 installer locally. It's a small download, and Neowin lists it as 2.5 MB (Open Source).
If you're on a legacy system, watch the in-app update prompts once 5.0 arrives. The project already added safeguards for this situation earlier in the 4.5 line: the official changelog notes an update-check change that added minimum Windows checking when updating, to prevent Rainmeter from downloading a new Rainmeter version that is incompatible with the users system. That's reassuring, but keeping your own copy of the installer is still the safest plan.
Section summary: Use winver and the System type field to find out where your PC stands, and archive the 4.5.27 installer if you're on 32-bit or older Windows.
Release cadence and package managers
Recent releases have been spaced out, as you'd expect from a mature project. GitHub's release list shows 4.5.25 as the May 17, 2026 release of Rainmeter 4.5.25, and Wikipedia records 4.5.26 as the stable release dated 20 May 2026. That puts 4.5.27 roughly four and a half months later.
Package-manager users didn't have to wait long. A community-maintained Chocolatey package was updated the same day, with its changelog noting that rainmeter was updated from version 4.5.26 to 4.5.27. If you manage Rainmeter that way across several machines, a normal Chocolatey upgrade will pick it up.
Analysis: a sensible goodbye to legacy Windows
Is dropping 32-bit and pre-1903 Windows 10 the right call? There's a reasonable case on each side.
In favor: Supporting two architectures and more than a decade of Windows versions means more testing and more build complexity. The fixes in this release are concurrency and memory-safety problems, which are exactly the kind of bug that gets worse with every legacy code path you maintain. Windows 7 and 8.1 are long out of Microsoft's support, and Microsoft itself has stopped shipping 32-bit Windows 11. Requiring 1903 also gives the developers a newer baseline of Windows APIs to build on.
Against: Rainmeter's own homepage still promotes it as running on Windows 7 or above, and plenty of people run it on old hardware because it's lightweight. Those users now get a frozen version. Skin authors who rely on older 32-bit plugins may also have to check their work against 5.0 when it arrives.
Overall, the developers are handling this well. They gave advance notice, shipped a stability-focused final release for legacy systems, and didn't leave anyone on a known-buggy build. That's a better send-off than many projects provide. Rainmeter has been around since 2001; Wikipedia puts its initial release at 22 February 2001. A clean break before a major version makes sense for a project that old.
The bottom line
- Upgrade if you use Lua-based skins or widgets that rely on WebParser, NowPlaying or RecycleManager. These fixes target crashes and freezes in exactly those components.
- Hold onto 4.5.27 if you run 32-bit Windows, Windows 7/8.x, or Windows 10 older than 1903. It's the final build for your system.
- Get ready for 5.0 if you're on modern 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. Nothing changes for you yet, but the next major version is on its way.
Your desktop widgets should be a bit more stable after this update. If your PC is on the wrong side of the 64-bit cutoff, this is the last Rainmeter version it will get.
