A fantasy game showcase presents gameplay scenes, customization menus, a release timeline, and concept art to a live audience.
RuneFest 2026 has delivered a crowded RuneScape calendar—but the announcements are not one giant sequel. Jagex outlined changes for RuneScape Reignited, Old School RuneScape and Dragonwilds, alongside a separate, early-development MMO. For PC players and community developers, the practical highlights include official plugin support and integrated modding tools, not just more places to swing a sword.

The event runs October 3–4, 2026, at Birmingham’s NEC, according to Jagex’s RuneFest FAQ. That matters when interpreting first-day coverage: the announcements are available, but the two-day convention is not yet over.

Reignited is not the new MMO

RPG Site reports that RuneScape Reignited launches December 2, 2026. Jagex’s own page confirms full Reignited access without membership from December 2 through December 12. Its advertised features include a remastered journey, an Adventure Guide and directly integrated, officially supported community plugins, including Quest Helper. Jagex also describes a world without Treasure Hunter and says the remastered journey’s second and third parts will arrive later in 2027.

The useful distinction is between the established game’s restoration initiative and the separate MMO announcement. “Reignited” and “RuneScape 4” should not be treated as interchangeable names.

RPG Site places the Plugin API’s launch in October 2026, with early hands-on access preceding the official release. Its account groups next year’s content into three arcs:

  • Hoard of Dragons, starting in January, follows Dragon Slayer.
  • City of Gnomes continues the longstanding gnome storyline.
  • Secrets of Karamja introduces an endgame raid.

The wider plan includes an Agility rework, skilling and solo bosses, expanded areas and a Grandmaster quest. Those are announced plans, not completed releases.

For developers, official extension support is the significant change. However, the Reignited page is a feature overview, not an API specification; it does not establish permissions, compatibility guarantees or installation instructions. Treat the promise of integration separately from the technical documentation needed to build against it.

Old School: firm dates meet polling-dependent proposals

Jagex’s Old School summit overview schedules The Fractured Archive for October 20, 2026, and Hardcore Worlds for November 4. Hardcore Worlds use new characters, a separate economy and one life, without boosted experience or drop rates. Death permits a reset or transfer to the main game, but equipment lost on death does not transfer. Fight Caves, Inferno and Nightmare Zone deaths count as unsafe under the announced rules.

The 2027 proposals include:

  • Dungeons of Gielinor: at least five bosses spanning different difficulties.
  • Menaphos: the Master-level Fool’s Gold quest, a true Soul Altar requiring 90 Runecraft and a Skilling Dungeon.
  • Mining and Smithing: Reforged, Fairytale III: Nexus of Power and an adapted The Chosen Commander.
  • The mysterious Tower of Xorphoros.

These proposals should not be presented as an unconditional delivery checklist.

There is also an important calendar correction: Jagex proposes Quest Month for November 2026, not simply sometime in 2027. Alongside the planned Graveyard quest, it proposes at least five additional small quests; notable rewards remain subject to polling.

The practical takeaway: distinguish dated releases from content awaiting player approval before planning progression around the roadmap.

Dragonwilds: modding gets a clearer window

Jagex’s Dragonwilds summit recap provides a more specific commitment than a generic “coming in 2027”: official modding is planned for the first half of 2027, alongside Song of Rebellion, Secure Servers and Leaderboards. Dedicated creation tools and an in-game mod browser and installer are planned for all platforms.

That is meaningful for PC creators, but “all platforms” does not establish unrestricted mod compatibility, identical functionality everywhere or cross-platform multiplayer. Those questions require further documentation.

The content schedule starts with Luminance, a free December 2026 update introducing elves, customization, building pieces, musical interactions and Prayer. Jagex explicitly says this Prayer skill differs from its RuneScape and Old School counterparts.

The 2027 Blood Crystal Saga has two chapters: Song of Rebellion, bringing Hunter and the city of Ailddinas, followed by Crown of Night. Jagex also promises continuing free updates and feedback-led quality-of-life improvements beyond the saga. The recap does not supply exact release dates for every chapter.

The new MMO remains an early announcement

RPG Site describes the separate MMO as unnamed, early in development and built with Unreal Engine. “RuneScape 4” remains a tentative label; the announcement does not establish launch timing, supported platforms or replacement of the existing games. An engine announcement is not a Windows system-requirements sheet.

Jagex also announced an animated adaptation involving Charlie White, known as MoistCr1TiKaL, and Lyrical Media. No release date was provided.

What PC readers should take away

The most actionable platform changes are RuneScape’s officially integrated plugins and Dragonwilds’ planned creation and mod-management tools. The former belongs to the established game’s Reignited initiative; the latter has a first-half-2027 development window. Neither should be confused with the separate new MMO.

RuneFest offered plenty of ambition. The sensible reading is less dramatic: mark the firm dates, respect the polling conditions, and wait for technical documentation before assuming what the new tools can do.
