A screen-recording app interface shows a mountain scene with webcam preview, audio controls, and recording buttons.
ShareX, the free and open-source screenshot tool for Windows that people tend to recommend in forum threads, has released version 22.0.0. Its developers call it the largest release in the project's history. The official changelog says: "In ShareX's 19 year history, this is the biggest update we've ever released." The main changes are a fully rebuilt interface and a native screen recorder that can work without FFmpeg.

The release also comes with a clear warning from the developers. Here is what changed, what is confirmed, and what to check before you put it on a machine you depend on.

A screen-recording app interface shows a mountain scene with webcam preview, audio controls, and recording buttons. What ShareX 22.0.0 actually is

The release is real and public. The project's GitHub release page shows that github-actions released it on 20 Oct at 02:51 UTC, and lists two downloads: a portable build, ShareX-22.0.0-portable-x64.zip, and an installer, ShareX-22.0.0-setup-x64.exe, each with a published SHA256 hash.

The developers are upfront about the risk. The official changelog says "every part of the UI has been rewritten from scratch with a modern design," and that because most of the application has been overhauled, they expect this release to be significantly less stable than usual. They add that they will be closely monitoring issue reports and addressing them as quickly as possible.

Neowin reports that ShareX 22.0.0 is still only available as a pre-release. The search results show the GitHub release and its files, but they don't show a pre-release label, so treat that status as Neowin's report rather than something confirmed independently. The developers' own stability warning matters more in practice anyway.

For context, the previous major version was recent. Download sites such as MajorGeeks list ShareX 21.0.0 dated 2026-07-04, so version 22 arrives about three and a half months later.

Section summary: Version 22.0.0 is published on GitHub with x64 installer and portable builds. The developers expect it to be less stable than usual, and Neowin describes it as a pre-release.

The headline feature: native screen recording

ShareX has recorded screens for a long time, but it relied on FFmpeg to do it. The changelog shows how long that has been the case: back in version 10.6.0, from January 2016, ShareX made the FFmpeg video and audio device installation optional and put an install button in the screen recording options window. If you have used ShareX for years, you probably remember fiddling with FFmpeg capture devices.

Version 22 adds a built-in path. According to the changelog, ShareX added native screen recording support without relying on FFmpeg, enabled by default. Note the wording: the native recorder is the default, but the changelog does not say FFmpeg has been removed from ShareX completely.

New recording inputs listed in the changelog:

  • Recording system audio
  • Recording microphone audio
  • Recording camera overlays, which is useful for tutorials, bug reports and quick walkthroughs with a talking head

A new recorder bar lets you set things up before you press record. The changelog describes it as a screen recorder bar for configuring recording options before starting, including start delay, system audio and microphone. Neowin adds that the bar covers cursor visibility, mouse highlighting, and audio sources, and that the screen recorder supports up to 120 FPS.

The changelog also lists a few smaller recording controls: an "Automatically start mouse highlighter" option, a "Restart" button in both the recorder bar and the system tray menu, and an option to show or hide the recording timer.

Treat 120 FPS as an upper limit, not a promise. Whether your PC can record smoothly at that rate depends on your CPU, GPU, storage and display setup, and the release notes make no performance claims.

Section summary: ShareX can now record screen, system audio, microphone and camera overlay without FFmpeg, and that is the default. A pre-record bar puts the common settings in one place.

A new interface built for Windows 11

The first thing you'll notice is the look. Neowin says ShareX 22 replaces the old Win32-style layout with a much cleaner UI built around a sidebar, larger spacing, and more modern controls, and that you can choose between dark and light themes and change the accent color. Neowin also says the floating capture toolbar now has larger buttons and clearer controls.

This matters because ShareX has a long history with themes. Older changelog entries show the developers admitting that dark mode in Windows Forms was a workaround. Many controls looked poor once their colours were changed, which is why an "Experimental dark theme" option was not turned on by default. A full rewrite is how you get away from that kind of patchwork.

A larger toolbox, now organized

ShareX says it has redesigned every existing tool from scratch and added many new ones. Neowin highlighted a ruler, mouse highlighter, background remover, image comparer, video trimmer, image beautifier and network monitor. Yes, there is now a network monitor in a screenshot tool.

The changelog also lists a remote storage browser that supports Amazon S3, SFTP, FTPS and FTP, plus a QR code tool. Several workflow changes are useful in daily use:

  • A categorized grid layout for the tools menu
  • An edit button for hiding or showing tools you don't use
  • Video files now appear in the image history window
  • "Trim video" and "Trim animated GIF" options in the right-click menus of the main and history windows
  • A drag-and-drop upload overlay on the main window

Neowin says dropped files go to your selected upload host and gives Imgur, Dropbox and Google Drive as examples. Those are examples of existing destinations, not a full list or new additions.

Security and installer changes

The changelog says ShareX's installer and assemblies are now code-signed with a certificate provided by Ember Swan, and that ShareX adds a warning before running unsigned installers. Code signing makes tampering easier to spot. It does not guarantee the software is bug-free, and the developers have just said this build may not be.

Should you upgrade now? A practical checklist

If ShareX is part of your daily work, such as documentation, support tickets or QA reports, take it slowly:

  1. Export your settings first. Older ShareX changelog guidance recommends the Export button under Application settings → Settings tab instead of copying the Documents\ShareX folder, because uploader passwords are encrypted with DPAPI. The redesigned interface may have moved these menus, so look for the export option before you upgrade.
  2. Check the download hash. GitHub publishes SHA256 hashes for the release. In PowerShell, run Get-FileHash .\ShareX-22.0.0-setup-x64.exe -Algorithm SHA256 and compare the result with AB8339422721F7123AB031C6845323BA7A8F2E1AB25DB849D76032AF6539EFA4.
  3. Try the portable build first. The portable ZIP lets you test the new interface and recorder without replacing your installed copy.
  4. Test recording before you rely on it. Do a short capture with system audio, microphone and camera on, then check audio sync and frame rate before recording anything important.
  5. Report reproducible bugs. The developers say they are watching issue reports closely.

The bottom line

This is a genuine overhaul, not a version number bump. Built-in recording with audio and camera support makes ShareX a more complete tool for capture and quick screencasts. The interface finally looks at home on Windows 11, and the larger toolbox cuts down on the small utilities many power users keep around.

Still, a 19-year-old app rewritten top to bottom will have bugs, and the developers say so themselves. Enthusiasts should try it. If your workflow depends on ShareX, stay on 21.0.0 until 22.x gets some bug-fix releases.
