The headline: a date, finally
Undead Labs says the closed beta opens on Tuesday, October 13, and that it is bringing more players into the game than ever before. Until now the studio had only promised closed beta playtests before the end of 2026. This announcement is the first concrete date.
As of this writing the beta has not started. Treat October 13 as the day invitations go out, not a day everyone gets to play.
Who gets in, and who doesn't
The access rules are the most practical part of the announcement.
- Current alpha testers: Every current alpha tester will be brought into the closed beta automatically.
- Everyone else: A new wave of invites goes out on October 13. You have to sign up at the official playtest site and complete a short onboarding survey to be considered.
- No invite? The studio says to stay signed up, because testing and access will keep expanding and there will be more chances to join.
Signing up does not guarantee a spot. Undead Labs has not said how many invitations it will send, or which regions and platforms are covered. It has also not given system requirements, how long the beta will run, or any age or account restrictions. A third-party guide (Guided.News) reported earlier that PC players would get access first, as with the alpha. That is secondary reporting and I could not confirm it in the studio's announcement. Don't plan around it.
The sign-up page also said it was part of the waitlist system. In August, Undead Labs said people who missed the first run might get other chances, because it planned to expand the beta "to more players over time." That fits the studio's own explanation. Creative Director Kevin Patzelt said the largest map yet and untethered multiplayer make stress-testing and fine-tuning necessary.
What's in the beta build
The announcement lists a lot of changes since the alpha. Everything below is the studio's description of the build, not independent testing.
- Survival: Food and water are both daily rations now, and going without them hurts. A starving community takes real penalties to health and stamina, not just morale.
- Plague Nests: Plague Nests are the centre of the threat. They grow networks of plague hearts toward your settlements, and those hearts strengthen over time from severity one to three. The beta includes four nests: Chem Plant, Slaughterhouse, Aeronautical and FEMA.
- Zombies: Perception and distraction systems were overhauled, so stealth and noise matter more, and bloaters work as a battlefield tool, especially with fire.
- Base management: Facilities are cheaper to build but cost more to run. You may own more than you can afford to operate at once, and staffing them with the right survivors matters.
- Enclaves: These are other communities you can trade with. If you ally with one, you can bring the whole enclave into your community. You can run up to three settlements.
- Weapons: Caliber now matters, so a .22 and a 5.56 no longer hit the same. Backpacks are purely cosmetic.
- Quality of life: The studio lists a new tutorial, more missions woven into the world, and fully dressed buildings and new landmarks. It also lists locker sorting by category, a clearer fire-mode selector, quicker access to each survivor's inventory, and improved performance.
Co-op
Undead Labs says the game plays the same solo or with up to three friends. In co-op, every player has full access to the shared world and can recruit survivors, run missions and manage settlements independently. One player can run one base while a friend runs another.
Xbox Wire's June interview with Patzelt gives more detail on the "untethered" design. Players can join the same save at different times and move the story forward asynchronously. The studio said the playable space is about four times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map.
This is a test build
The studio warns that some character dialogue still uses placeholder synthetic voice while voice recording continues. Some UI screens are temporary, and gameplay numbers will change during tuning. The "improved performance" claim comes with no benchmarks, hardware targets or settings. Don't read much into it until testers report on their own machines.
Release context
The beta is not the launch. The game is still targeted for 2027. Xbox Wire's June coverage said it would be on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud and Game Pass. It said it would work with Xbox Play Anywhere, and would also be on Steam and PlayStation 5.
That sits oddly beside the studio's recent change of status. The September 22 post, titled "Undead Labs becomes Independent Studio", appears in the studio's news feed. KitGuru reported earlier that Undead Labs was among the studios Microsoft parted ways with this summer. Console Monster reported Xbox confirming the game was still coming to Game Pass. Since the studio is no longer under Microsoft, check the current terms for Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere closer to launch.
What PC players should do now
- Register at the official playtest site if you haven't, and complete the onboarding survey. The survey is part of being considered.
- Watch your email on October 13 for invitations.
- If you were an alpha tester, expect to be moved into the beta automatically.
- Expect rough edges: placeholder voices, temporary UI and shifting numbers.
- If you don't get in, stay on the list. The studio says more invites will follow.
Bottom line
The October 13 date is the useful news. For PC players the practical points are that alpha testers are in automatically, everyone else has to be picked, and the build is explicitly unfinished. The studio gave no system requirements or numbers, so any performance claims are untested for now.
