RTX 5070 moves ahead of the mainstream pack
DLCompare’s coverage highlights the RTX 5070 overtaking familiar mainstream models. Valve’s September figures confirm the following order among the five leading individually listed GPUs:
| GPU | September share |
|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 5070 | 5.86% |
| GeForce RTX 5060 | 4.20% |
| GeForce RTX 5060 Ti | 3.87% |
| GeForce RTX 4060 | 3.72% |
| GeForce RTX 3060 | 3.54% |
The RTX 5070’s lead over the RTX 5060 is 1.66 percentage points, calculated from Valve’s figures. These are individual model entries, not combined desktop-and-laptop product-family totals.
DLCompare also reports the Radeon RX 9070 XT at 1.35% and RX 9060 XT at 0.73%. Those lower shares describe prevalence among respondents, not a verdict on AMD’s performance or value. A popularity chart is not a benchmark suite wearing a different hat.
32 GB RAM takes the largest share
System memory supplies the other major development: 32 GB reaches 42.22%, up 4.77 percentage points, while 16 GB falls to 37.82%, down 3.38 points. Together, those configurations account for 80.04% of respondents, calculated from the reported shares.
DLCompare suggests that better-equipped systems might reflect buyers trying to postpone future upgrades, while acknowledging that the survey cannot establish their motivations. That distinction matters: these percentages do not demonstrate that shortages, prices, or any particular purchasing strategy caused the movement.
A substantial shift in the survey’s language mix
Another useful detail in Valve’s report adds context: Simplified Chinese rises to 31.39%, gaining 7.42 percentage points. Valve also explicitly describes participation as optional and anonymous.
That language shift does not prove why the RTX 5070 gained ground. Language is not a reliable substitute for country, and the published totals do not connect particular GPU models with particular language groups. Nevertheless, it is a reason to avoid interpreting every monthly hardware-share increase as evidence of existing users upgrading their PCs.
DLCompare similarly cautions that changes in participation can influence the monthly results. The sensible interpretation is a changing snapshot of respondents—not a direct count of graphics cards sold during September.
What Windows PC owners should take away
The editorial takeaway is straightforward: use this survey to understand the hardware represented in Steam’s participating audience, not to choose an upgrade by leaderboard position.
For someone satisfied with an existing PC, neither result establishes a reason to replace it. For someone planning a build, popularity should remain separate from the questions that actually decide suitability: the intended games, display resolution, performance target, and budget.
September’s survey gives the RTX 5070 a clear lead and puts 32 GB at the front of the memory table. Whether those positions persist—and what drove the sharp changes—requires more evidence than one monthly snapshot.
