The Legend of Khiimori's Wildlife Update ties new systems to the courier job
The Legend of Khiimori is a single-player open-world game set in 13th-century Mongolia. You play a Yam courier rider who delivers packages and cargo on horseback, gathers supplies and handles the open world. The courier fantasy centers on taking on various activities as a Yam courier rider, tasked with delivering packages and cargo, gathering vital items, and mastering the challenges of the open world. The game runs on Unreal Engine 5, and horse training and breeding are at its core.
The developer's Steam announcement says The Wildlife Update is out now for everyone and introduces Fishing, the Animal Ledger and Cargo Protection items, as well as new wildlife and animal behaviour and a whole world of bug fixes and balance improvements. Fishing and the Animal Ledger were Kickstarter stretch goals. The beta announcement says the 0.12.0 patch introduces some of the Kickstarter Stretch Goals, namely Fishing and the Animal Ledger.
None of these features is just decoration. Each one connects to the delivery loop, as described in the developer's notes:
- Fishing takes place at spots along streams, rivers and lakes. Fish come in different rarities and can be cooked into food for the road or sold to merchants. Rods and baits unlock for crafting as you climb the courier ranks and show up at traders at the same time.
- The Animal Ledger logs the horses and wild animals you meet, with artwork and details for each entry. It also lists which resources each animal yields when hunted, which the developer says helps with crafting recipes that need specific ingredients.
- The new animals are gazelles, argali sheep and wild Asiatic donkeys, plus female deer. They move as herds, and their hunting grounds are now marked on the map.
- Cargo Protection items can be crafted, bought from merchants, earned from resource missions or found in bandit caches. They guard freight against heat, cold, water and other hazards, and they unlock as you progress rather than from the start.
ixbt.games describes the ledger as the heroine's "diary," and its report suggests pack bags can now be "reinforced" for valuable cargo. The official feature names are Animal Ledger and Cargo Protection. The new donkeys and sheep are wild animals to find and hunt. Nothing in the notes says they carry cargo.
Cargo Protection in Khiimori adds a decision to every delivery
Cargo protection is the feature most likely to change how the game plays. Aesir says players asked for it throughout pre-release testing and after Early Access began: they wanted ways to keep packages from arriving damaged by the weather. The studio says the items should create "an interesting decision with each delivery" about whether to spend resources on protection.
The public release also changes how you get these items. In the first beta build, protection items were available from the start. The 0.12.1 beta patch on September 14 changed that so they unlock through progression. The final notes add resource missions as a new source alongside crafting, merchants and bandit caches. The cargo HUD and item tooltips now colour-code cargo traits, which makes it easier to see what a package is sensitive to.
Why the inventory and mission rebuild matters for existing saves
Behind the headline features, Wildlife rebuilds two core systems: inventory and missions. Aesir says a large share of player bug reports traced back to those two systems, so it rebuilt them instead of patching around the problems.
The same notes carry a warning Early Access players should take seriously. Save games from older versions may behave unexpectedly after the system rebuild, and the studio asks players to report problems with the in-game bug reporter on F1. The notes also list save-related fixes. Loading a save made after the Restoration mission no longer crashes, the main-menu Continue button now loads your latest save instead of unsaved progress from the session you just left, and sleeping in certain village beds now saves the game.
The beta period also turned up a mission bug linked to full inventories. The 0.12.2 beta notes say missions could break permanently if they couldn't give you an item because your inventory was full. They now continue, either asking you to make room or moving on without the item. Aesir warned that a tutorial mission already broken this way in the beta can't be repaired. The fix is to load a save from before it broke, except for the Savdag-un Khor mission, which the patch unblocks automatically.
Performance and stability fixes Windows players should know about
The Wildlife notes include several PC fixes that sound more technical than the gameplay features:
- Reduced shader-compilation stutter.
- A fix for a memory leak that could make memory use climb over long sessions.
- Cheaper animal movement and animation, so more wildlife can be on screen at once.
- Fixes for the cursor getting stuck mid-screen with a gamepad, which could stop you starting or continuing a game with a controller.
- A fix for the "Field of View on Foot" accessibility setting doing nothing.
The first 0.12.0 beta notes also listed a fix for a startup crash on PCs with Intel AI Neural Boost. That fix appeared in the beta notes, and the public notes available here are truncated, so check that it applies to your build if that crash has affected you.
Performance reports after launch are mixed. In one Steam discussion thread, a player said the update ran "very choppy" even after verifying game files. That is one user's report on unspecified hardware, not a confirmed widespread problem, but it's worth knowing before you update mid-playthrough.
Aesir still lists several known issues in the public release:
- The Animal Ledger shows the wrong resources for several animals.
- Animals may keep running through the air after leaving a ledge.
- The Savdag-un Khor tutorial mission can't be tracked in the journal.
- Some notifications and prompts appear in English whatever language you've selected.
Xbox Series X|S is on Khiimori's roadmap, but nothing has shipped
The console plan is real, but the details are thin. ixbt.games reports that Aesir confirmed The Legend of Khiimori for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2, with the premiere possibly taking place as early as 2027. The English and Russian versions of that report differ slightly: the Russian text says "early 2027," and the English text says "as early as 2027." Treat both as a loose window, not a date.
Other outlets confirm the platform list. Worthplaying's coverage of the game's Early Access delay said the game was coming to PC (Steam) in 2026, with Nintendo Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S also planned. GamePro's game page says PS5 and Xbox versions are to follow later. The game already has a listing on the Xbox store, which describes it as a system-driven game where you explore the untamed land of 13th century Mongolia as a brave courier rider. That listing is not a release date, and no verified source gives Xbox pricing, a launch month, or details on cross-save, cross-play or performance targets.
The launch history suggests caution. Worthplaying reported in October 2025 that Early Access had been delayed to March 2026. ixbt.games lists March 3, 2026 as the release date, which means the "released in March" in its report refers to the start of Early Access, not a full 1.0 launch. The Wildlife Update comes about six months into that period. The Steam announcement says there are more animals to come: the ledger already has entries for species not yet in the game.
One update-tracking site lists 2026 console dates for the US. That conflicts with the 2027 window reported by ixbt.games, and 2026 is almost over with no console release in sight, so the 2027 framing is the more credible one.
What this means for you
If you play on PC, update now, but back up your saves first because of the system rebuild. If you're waiting for Xbox, there's nothing to buy or preorder yet.
The backup method Aesir gave during the beta is straightforward. Open File Explorer, paste %localappdata%/LegendOfKhiimori/Saved/SaveGames into the address bar, and copy the SaveGames folder somewhere else, such as your desktop. The studio described this for beta testers, but the save-compatibility warning is in the public notes too, so the same precaution applies.
- The Wildlife Update has been live for all Legend of Khiimori players on PC since September 23, 2026, with no beta branch needed.
- Copy the SaveGames folder under
%localappdata%\LegendOfKhiimori\Savedbefore you load an old save, because the inventory and mission rebuild can make older saves behave unexpectedly. - If a mission stops working, the developer's advice is to load an earlier save and report the bug with the F1 bug reporter.
- Cargo Protection items and fishing gear unlock as you progress through courier ranks, so a new or early save won't have them straight away.
- Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and Switch 2 versions are planned, with a launch reported for 2027 at the earliest. No date, price or feature details are confirmed.
- The game costs $29.99 on Steam in Early Access, and GamePro lists the Epic Games Store as another PC storefront.
Wildlife is a substantial Early Access update. It adds three connected systems to the courier loop and rebuilds the inventory and mission code underneath. The developer wants that rebuild to make the game more stable now and to give it a stronger foundation for future updates. Aesir said it would publish a new roadmap on Friday, September 25. That's the next place to look for firmer timing on the full release and the Xbox Series X|S version, which for now remains a plan without a date.
