What was said
Russian gaming outlet ixbt.games reported on September 27 that a Reddit user called SGTPICKLES77 had pointed people to a reply from a member of the The Outer Worlds 2 team. As ixbt reported it, the message said work on the add-on continues, that news will be shared "in the near future," and thanked players for their patience.
Where the message came from matters. It was posted on Reddit by a player. A commenter in that thread says the reply appeared under a YouTube announcement about a patch for the original The Outer Worlds, not the sequel. So this is a studio reply in a comment section, not a press release, trailer or roadmap.
The Russian-language version of the ixbt story, titled "Obsidian не отменила дополнение для The Outer Worlds 2 — разработка продолжается," draws the same link to the reorganization. It notes that Obsidian Entertainment is to become part of Bethesda, and says that news is what made players worry about the game's extra content.
What the message leaves out:
- A release date or launch window
- Names, story details or setting for the expansions
- Any platform-by-platform schedule
- A date for the promised news
"In the near future" refers to when the studio will say more. It is not a promise that the expansion itself is close to release.
The two expansions were announced before launch
The DLC plan predates the reorganization. In its October 24, 2025 early-access announcement, Obsidian said the Premium Edition includes a DLC Pass for two upcoming story expansions, and that Standard Edition owners can upgrade to get the Premium bonuses.
The studio repeated the plan later. Pure Xbox reported that as part of a general end of year message from Microsoft's studios, Obsidian's Brandon Adler talked a little bit about what the team is working on for The Outer Worlds 2, including those two premium expansions. In the quote Pure Xbox published, Adler said "We have a couple of DLCs coming out and we are also talking about what kind of continual improvements we want to release to the players over the next year."
The new reply mentions "the add-on" in the singular. That doesn't show the two-expansion plan has changed. It's a short community comment, not a revised roadmap. Based on the evidence, work on the add-on content continues, and two story expansions remain the announced plan.
In short: if you bought the Premium Edition or upgraded to it, your DLC Pass still covers two story expansions. Nothing announced so far has changed that.
Why players were nervous: Xbox's "reset"
On September 22, 2026, Xbox Wire posted a memo to staff called "Continuing Our Reset." It announced 268 job cuts across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. It also reorganized the studios into fewer business units.
The part that matters here: Bethesda's remit expands to include Obsidian. The memo says Obsidian will carry on with its current projects, naming Grounded and a new Fallout project made with Bethesda Game Studios. It does not mention The Outer Worlds 2 by name. That gap is a big reason fans started asking questions.
The same memo also covered:
- Activision taking on World's Edge and Rare, and developing the next Halo with a new team
- King absorbing Microsoft Casual Games
- Playground and Turn 10 merging into one studio focused on Forza and Fable
- A proposed closure of Ninja Theory after two separate sale agreements fell through
After a memo that also covers job cuts, divestitures and a proposed closure, it's understandable that fans of a game not named in it wanted answers.
There is also a commercial side. Wikipedia's entry for the game says it received generally positive reviews from critics, but failed to meet the sales expectations of Xbox Game Studios. Weak sales plus a management change is exactly when post-launch plans tend to get cut. This reply suggests the DLC hasn't been cut yet.
What's confirmed and what isn't
| Claim | Status |
|---|---|
| Two story expansions announced, covered by the Premium Edition DLC Pass | Confirmed by Obsidian (October 2025) |
| Obsidian now reports into Bethesda | Confirmed by Xbox Wire (September 22, 2026) |
| Work on the add-on continues | Reported via a team member's community reply |
| Release date, names, content | Not announced |
| Reorganization delayed or changed the DLC | No evidence |
| The October 6 Xbox town hall will show the DLC | No evidence |
The last row needs a word. The Xbox memo mentions an October 6 town hall where the "ALL-XBOX team" will look back on progress and ahead to the lineup. That is an internal staff meeting. Nothing says The Outer Worlds 2 will come up there, and it isn't a public showcase. Guesses about release timing or leaked achievements in the Reddit thread are also just guesses for now.
For PC and Xbox players
Obsidian's official page lists The Outer Worlds 2 as released on October 29, 2025, published by Xbox Game Studios, and available on Windows, Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and Battle.net. The expansions have no confirmed platform details yet. It's reasonable to assume they will follow the base game, but until Obsidian says so, that's an assumption.
ixbt also says Obsidian's summer patch fixed technical problems and added a photo mode, appearance changes aboard the ship, and transmogrification. We couldn't confirm that patch list against Obsidian's own notes, so treat it as ixbt's account.
Practical takeaways:
- Premium Edition owners: you don't need to do anything. The DLC Pass still covers two story expansions as announced.
- Standard Edition owners thinking about upgrading: you're paying for DLC with no date, names or price details yet. Waiting for Obsidian's promised update costs you nothing.
- Watching the reorganization: the Bethesda move changes who Obsidian reports to. So far there is no evidence it changes what Obsidian is making for The Outer Worlds 2.
Bottom line
This is small news. One studio reply, passed along by a Reddit user and reported by ixbt, says work on the add-on continues and more news is coming "in the near future." It's still meaningful for owners who paid for a DLC Pass and just watched their developer get moved under Bethesda.
It's reassuring, but it's not a release date. Premium owners should expect news, not a download, until Obsidian announces more.
