Xbox Play Anywhere Moves The Witcher 3 Beyond Smart Delivery
Today the Xbox version relies on one cross-generation feature. According to VGC, The Witcher 3 is only a Smart Delivery title, which means it installs the Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S version of the game depending on which console is being used. Smart Delivery only picks the right console build. It gives you nothing on Windows.
Play Anywhere is a separate Microsoft program, and it covers PC. In its April 2026 Xbox update, Microsoft said over 1,500 games now support Xbox Play Anywhere, making it easier than ever to switch between PC, console, and supported handhelds for Xbox Play Anywhere games you own at no extra cost to you. It also says your progress travels with you, including saves, add-ons, and achievements. Just sign in with your Xbox account on any supported device and pick up right where you left off.
CD Projekt Red first confirmed support in its Xbox Wire announcement: "And Remastered also supports XBOX Play Anywhere! Enjoy seamless play across your XBOX Series X|S, PC, or XBOX-supported handheld, and carry on your upgraded adventure without missing a beat." Windows Central noted that the studio put this in the small print, which explains why the feature drew little attention until this week.
How the Free Windows Copy of Witcher 3 Remastered Is Delivered
CD Projekt Red's Japanese account posted the specifics on September 21. Notebookcheck quotes the post: customers who own The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on Xbox will be able to receive the PC version at no additional cost through the Microsoft Store. VGC adds that players will be able to download the PC version of The Witcher 3 Remastered from their Xbox app on PC, and will be able to sync their game save across both versions.
The free copy is a Microsoft Store build tied to your Xbox account. It is not a Steam, GOG or Epic key. That follows from how CD Projekt Red framed the change: the new PC version comes through the Microsoft Store, and the studio says the move will not affect the PC versions currently available on other platforms, such as Steam. If you already own the game on Steam or GOG, you get the Remastered upgrade on that storefront anyway and gain nothing extra here. The new value goes to people whose only copy is on Xbox.
The news came out through Japan for a regulatory reason. VGC reports that the news was originally confirmed through CD Projekt Red's Japanese account, because it had to inform players that the PC version would be rated CERO Z. According to the studio's post, the PC version provided through the Microsoft Store in Japan will be the CERO Z version, marking the first application of a CERO rating to any of our PC titles. CERO Z is Japan's adults-only classification. Readers outside Japan shouldn't read the Japanese post as a regional limit, because VGC says the Play Anywhere status will be applied in all regions.
Which Xbox Owners Get Remastered, and Which Only Get the Expansions
Several different offers are bundled into this launch, and they apply to different people. They are easy to mix up.
On Xbox, CD Projekt Red says Remastered launches on September 29 as a free upgrade for all owners of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on XBOX Series X|S. The expansion offer is wider: players who only own the The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt base game will receive both Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions for free. This includes players on XBOX One. Digital owners will automatically receive the expansions in their library, while disc-based players can claim the expansions for free from the Store.
Across all platforms, the studio's announcement says Remastered will be available as a free upgrade to all owners of the game on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It is also available for pre-purchase on Battle.net and Nintendo Switch 2 (and if you own The Witcher 3 on Nintendo Switch, you will be able to claim Remastered on Nintendo Switch 2 when it releases). The official FAQ lists the upgrade for all current-generation platforms (PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2).

Two gaps are worth knowing about. None of the official posts say whether Xbox One owners get Remastered or Play Anywhere. The FAQ says on previous-generation consoles, everything remains unchanged except that Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are now available for free. The announcements also don't say whether disc owners get the PC entitlement. They only address how disc owners claim the expansions. If you own the game on disc and want the Windows version, wait until launch day and check the Xbox app before assuming you have it.
What Remastered Changes in The Witcher 3 on Xbox and PC
The upgrade itself is large. On Xbox Wire, CD Projekt Red describes improved textures for environments, NPCs and monsters, reworked lighting, and improvements to ray tracing. On the gameplay side, changes have been made to combat, traversal, and general movement too. The additions include new finishers, among them an Aard-based finisher, and an adaptive camera that moves in tighter or zooms out depending on how many enemies you're fighting.
The biggest mechanical change is progression. The studio says new perks and abilities have been added, many existing skills have been reworked, and with the skill trees themselves completely redesigned, unlocking and creating your build becomes more flexible and intuitive. Other additions are transmogrification for weapon and armor appearance, an expanded photo mode, and cross-platform mod support. Xbox Wire says with mods available on XBOX Series X|S, you can create and play a wealth of custom content. Windows Central also lists improved monster AI and revamped horse riding.
There's one handheld-specific claim. Windows Central reports the remaster will also get FSR 4.0 support on the Xbox Ally X. The official Xbox and CD Projekt Red announcements don't mention it, so treat it as Windows Central's reporting. It is not a documented performance figure.
For existing saves, CD Projekt Red's FAQ on the edition consolidation says your save files remain compatible and Cross Progression will remain functional the same as before. That answer is about the change to the Complete Edition. It isn't a statement about Remastered specifically. Anyone planning to carry a very long playthrough into the new skill system should expect to find out more on launch day.
Why ROG Xbox Ally Owners Benefit Most From Play Anywhere
Handhelds get the most out of this change. Xbox Wire's wording covers XBOX-supported handheld devices without naming a model. VGC takes it a step further and says owners will be able to play the game on supported Xbox handheld devices, such as the Xbox ROG Ally series of handheld PCs. ASUS's ROG Xbox Ally handhelds run Windows and the Xbox PC app, so a Play Anywhere entitlement lets Xbox owners install the game there without buying it again.
Microsoft has been building out the handheld side of its PC app this year. The April update notes that the Handheld Compatibility Program makes it easier for you to identify which games are optimized for handheld play. No compatibility rating for The Witcher 3 Remastered has been announced. Until one appears, how well the game runs on any specific handheld is unconfirmed.
What this means for you
If your only copy of The Witcher 3 is on Xbox Series X|S, you don't need to do anything before September 29. Once the update is out, open the Xbox app on your Windows PC or Xbox Ally handheld, look for the game in your library, and install the PC build. Steam, GOG and Epic owners should update through their existing launcher and ignore the Microsoft Store version. Disc owners and Xbox One-only owners should confirm on launch day what they actually received. Of these two groups, only the expansions offer has been spelled out for Xbox One owners.

For Microsoft, getting a major PC-and-console RPG onto Play Anywhere adds one of the best-known names to a catalogue of more than 1,500 games. The next item on the calendar is Songs of the Past, the third expansion, which Xbox Wire says is coming in 2027 and takes Geralt to the new realm of Letten, Dandelion's homeland. CD Projekt Red says it will benefit from all the upgrades included in Remastered. It is a separate release and is not part of this month's free update.
