Well Dweller Joins Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on Day One
MonsterVine reported that the game was out on all seven platforms on September 22. Microsoft's own Xbox Wire listings back up both the date and the Game Pass placement. The official September wave 2 Game Pass announcement lists Well Dweller for September 22 under Cloud, Console, Handheld and PC, with the plan labels "Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass". It's billed as "Available on day one with Xbox Game Pass!"
The plan labels are the detail to read closely. In the same announcement, other titles such as Dune: Awakening and Mad King Redemption carry Game Pass Premium labels as well, and Rematch is flagged for Game Pass Essential. Well Dweller has neither. That makes it one of the day-one additions limited to the top console tier and the PC tier. Screen Rant draws the same line, noting that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers can jump into the adventure without having to purchase the game separately.
The "Handheld" tag also means something specific. Xbox Wire's footnote says games with a Handheld designation are ones optimized for handheld play. Windows gaming handhelds running the Xbox app are the obvious fit for that label. For cloud players, the Cloud listing means Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can stream the game without installing it locally.
It arrived in a crowded week. Xbox Wire's announcement also covers Dune: Awakening on the same day, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 coming to Premium on September 25, Minecraft Dungeons II on September 29 and Gears of War: E-Day on October 6. Screen Rant notes that the game is a part of Microsoft's second wave of September 2026 additions, joining several other games coming to the service in the next few weeks.
Xbox Play Anywhere and Smart Delivery Tie the Console and Windows Versions Together
Xbox Wire's "Next Week on Xbox" roundup for September 21–25 gives Well Dweller four labels: Game Pass, Optimized for Xbox Series X|S, Smart Delivery and Xbox Play Anywhere. The listing names Top Hat Studios as publisher and offers the game through both PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass.
If you're buying rather than subscribing, the Play Anywhere label matters most. As Microsoft generally describes the program, one qualifying digital purchase from the Microsoft Store covers both the Xbox console version and the Windows version, and progress follows your Xbox account. The listing doesn't spell out per-game specifics such as cross-save behaviour. Still, it puts Well Dweller in the same bucket as other Play Anywhere titles, so a Microsoft Store purchase shouldn't leave your PC progress stranded.
Smart Delivery is Microsoft's system for serving the right console version to the hardware you own. There's disagreement about which consoles that covers. GamingBible reported that while Well Dweller is confined to PS5, last-gen Xbox gamers can also play on Xbox One. Microsoft's September 22 listing describes the title as "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S", while the Game Pass post uses the generic label "Console". No Microsoft listing checked for this article names Xbox One. If you're on older hardware, look at the Microsoft Store page on your console before counting on it.
The launch price is modest. The Xbox listing shows $19.99, discounted to $16.99 at launch, and Kyle Thompson's Steam creator page shows the same $19.99 price with a 15 percent discount to $16.99.
Where Well Dweller Lives on Windows: the Xbox App, Steam or GOG
On Windows the game is sold in three places, and each route has different consequences. Through the Xbox app, it runs either as the PC Game Pass version or as a Microsoft Store purchase with Play Anywhere. The Steam version is tied to your Steam account and library, and the GOG version is tied to GOG's store.
The demo history points to Steam as the storefront Thompson's audience watched most closely. Tech Times reported last month that a free demo is currently available on Steam (PC only). It added that the demo was updated multiple times during Steam Next Fest in June 2026 based on player feedback, including adjustments to the bubble traversal mechanic, added aim assist, and additional healing spots in harder sections. MonsterVine had covered the first public Steam demo in April, when it launched alongside Top Hat Studios' Spring Showcase.
If you already pay for PC Game Pass, the Xbox app route costs nothing extra and makes an easy trial run. Buyers face a normal trade-off. A Microsoft Store purchase also covers Xbox Series X|S through Play Anywhere, while a Steam or GOG purchase stays in that store's library and has no console entitlement. The price is the same, so the choice comes down to which library you want the game in.
On the Microsoft side, the key limit is the tier. The official plan labels don't cover Game Pass Premium or Game Pass Essential members, and the Xbox app's catalog entry is the final word on whether your plan and region include the game.
Kyle Thompson Follows Islets and Crypt Custodian With a Darker Metroidvania
For anyone deciding whether to install it, the game itself is a 2D exploration-action title in the metroidvania mould. You play Glimmer, a tiny bird armed with a matchstick. His siblings have been taken from their nest by a wicked queen who plans to make them part of her royal gown. Microsoft's store copy calls it "a dark fairy-tale metroidvania," set in a rotting kingdom where Glimmer battles beasts, solves puzzles and gains abilities that open up more of the map. iXBT.games adds that the hero's main tool is a match, used as both a light source and a weapon.
The progression follows the genre. New movement and combat abilities unlock areas you couldn't reach before on an interconnected map, which hides optional zones, trinkets and extra story details. Along the way you meet allies who are trying to survive under the queen's rule.
Thompson's record explains why this indie got a day-one Game Pass slot. His Steam creator page introduces him in one line: "Hey! I'm Kyle and I make metroidvanias." It says his brother Eric writes the music. It lists Crypt Custodian (August 27, 2024) and Islets (August 24, 2022) as his earlier releases. Tech Times reports that Kyle Thompson is the primary creator — he writes all the code, draws all the art, and designs all the levels. Explosion Network notes that the game was originally revealed during a Nintendo Indie World showcase, with the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 versions announced in August.
Early reception looks good, though only one outlet has reported a figure. iXBT.games cited a 91 percent critic rating and said critics singled out the atmosphere, world design, hand-drawn art, animation, music and humour. The same report gives the release as September 23, a day later than both Xbox Wire and Steam list. Treat that date as an error.
What this means for PC and Xbox players
Whether you should download it now depends mostly on your Game Pass tier and which storefront you normally use.
- If you have Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, you can play the full game now at no extra cost through the Xbox app on Windows, on Xbox Series X|S, or by cloud streaming with Ultimate.
- If you have Game Pass Premium or Game Pass Essential, Microsoft's launch listing doesn't include Well Dweller in your plan, so you'd need to buy it or move up a tier.
- If you're buying, a Microsoft Store copy carries Xbox Play Anywhere and covers both console and PC, while Steam and GOG copies stay in those stores.
- The launch price on the Xbox listing and on Steam is $19.99, reduced to $16.99, so the discount doesn't make one storefront cheaper than the other.
- If you're on Xbox One, check the Microsoft Store listing on your console first, because Microsoft's release listing only names Xbox Series X|S.
- If you play on a Windows handheld, the Handheld designation in Microsoft's Game Pass announcement means the game is flagged as optimized for handheld play.
Well Dweller is a routine Game Pass launch done carefully: one $19.99 indie on three Windows storefronts, with Microsoft's version covering console, PC, cloud and handheld on day one. Whether it stays in the catalog depends on the terms of its Game Pass deal, which Microsoft hasn't published. For now, Ultimate and PC Game Pass members can play it without buying it, and a Microsoft Store purchase covers both console and PC.
Update: Additional details (September 22, 2026)
TheXboxHub lists the UK Xbox Store price at £16.74. It also specifically includes Xbox One among the supported Xbox platforms, although Microsoft’s own launch listings previously checked did not name that console.
