What Xbox added
Pure Xbox says the page is reached through the Play.Xbox browser site. The reported path is Settings > Manage Games > Disc to digital licence history. The page carries a short explanation. Games you no longer have access to through disc-to-digital licensing will be listed there. It adds that this can happen when you've lost possession of the game discs.
One caveat on sourcing. The Play.Xbox page itself wouldn't render during our research, so the menu path and wording come from Pure Xbox's report. We haven't verified them against Microsoft's own page.
The page is a record of lost access. Nothing in the reporting suggests it's a general purchase history or a library manager. It also doesn't appear to restore anything.
How the licence is tied to the disc
Xbox Wire announced the feature on August 26, 2026. Players claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. Once claimed, the entitlement unlocks benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, where supported. The physical disc keeps working as before.
Xbox opened the programme to everyone later. Xbox announced the rollout on September 29, 2026, after Xbox Insiders tested the feature for about a month. Each licence stays tied to the physical disc. If an owner sells or lends a disc, the new holder claims the licence, and the original owner's rights are revoked until the disc returns or the game is bought again.
Pure Xbox quotes Microsoft's support language on the condition. If you lose, sell, give away or otherwise no longer possess a qualifying disc, access to the associated licence may be limited or revoked. The wording is "may", so don't read it as a guarantee that every departing disc triggers an instant revocation. The reporting doesn't say how quickly a change takes effect, or whether it needs an online check.
Who benefits
The history page is most useful for people whose shelves change often:
- Lenders: Check what you've lost access to after a disc goes to a friend.
- Sellers and trade-in regulars: Use it as a record of what left your account when a disc did.
- Shared households: Check it if more than one account has used the same discs.
- Anyone confused by a game that suddenly won't install: It may explain why.
How to get access back
The recovery options haven't changed. According to the Pure Xbox report, you can:
- Regain possession of the qualifying disc and play it while signed in to your account.
- Buy a new digital version from the Microsoft Store.
The history page doesn't offer a third route. Nothing in the available evidence says it can reverse a revocation.
Limits to keep in mind
- Not every game qualifies. Xbox said it was starting with thousands of titles and would add more.
- Eligibility can change. Microsoft's support page says eligibility may change because of "technical, licensing, publishing, manufacturing, and other factors."
- Older discs are out. Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs do not qualify.
- Ownership is different. Microsoft grants one revokable digital licence per eligible disc, tied to that disc. That isn't the same as a standard digital purchase.
Analysis
The page makes the trade-off visible. A system that moves a licence along with a disc needs some way to show the person who gave the disc up what happened. It's also a sensible bit of transparency, because the rule that a disc carries the licence is easy to forget. Skeptics may note that a list of losses is not a recovery tool. Players who sell discs but still expect digital access will still need to buy the game again. For habitual disc-swappers, a clear record beats a surprise.
Expect Microsoft to document the page formally. When it does, the open questions are whether revocations come with a timestamp, whether notifications exist, and how disputes get handled. The reporting doesn't answer any of those yet.
